JOHN 19—The union 11 majority of THE LEGISLATURE. The house met at 2 p. m. on Monday. The committee on railways reported favorably on the Columbia river and Kootenay Navigation bill, Mr, Higglns moved that in the opinion of ihis House it is desirable for the government lo take steps, during the recess, thai will insure the extension of the Es- quimalt-Nnnalmo Railway from Comox lo some convenient point or harbor on the northern pari of Vancouver Island. The mover sail! thai he regretted, that tie re was not in existence u definite rail- mi v policy of the Provincial < lovernment by which policy syndicates, encouraged By the reserve grant of If3,200 per mile from the Dominion Government might step iii nnd build railways wherever they were necessary. Ho said the Island of Vancouver was 800 miles long; but it would only he necessary to build from Ctmiox (he taking it for granted that either the Ksquiinnlt and Nanaimo Railway Company or the Bute Inlet Company Would construct the section between Comox nntl Wellington) to one of the ninnv due harbors on the northern end of tlie Island. This would leave but 10f miles for the Government to insure the construction of durimr the recess. This si 1 tion might be built with a Government guarantee of 2 per cent, on (8,600,00(1 for twenty years, or bv n grant of the richest mineral, timber, fossil ami agricultural land in the Provide, or by both. Surveys in the possession of tlie Lands and Works Department showed that the land on the northern end of ihis Island abounded in natural wealth; all the resources that went lo mnke u country great were there in abundance, If the existing gap was closed—if there was continuous communication by rail from Victoria to the northern end of the Island, passengers antl freight could be transported to or from this city and Alaska in two and a half days. Supposing the magnificent scheme of the President of the Council, of a fern from Beeehy Bav to Crescent Bay, with rail communication fo Portland to be carried out, Ihe trip from Portland to Alaska would be made in three ami a half days. and some point on the northern end of Vancouver Island would then become the terminus of ocean navigation to the North Pacific. (Hear, hear.) Hon. Mr. Robson observed thai the wording of the resolution was imperfect, inasmuch as it asked the government to "ensure the construction" of tlie road Ie the northern end of the island, He proposed to amend the resolution, so as to rend "promote the construction" etc. The government looked upon the road as one of local, provincial and national im- l.ondnn, March 19.—The uelv temper pnrinnce, and the matter had received the Land Boomers in the Indian Territory SHOT BY UNITED STATES TROOPS. The refusal of the Liberals to accept Mr. Smith's challenge to give nrnest consideration of the government The crent bulk of the land in Vancouver Island was to the north of Nanaimo, the fisheries were to the north and much of the groat latent.wealth of the province.
