| In the deliberations ol high school
touchers many interesting papers were
read.
I FIRST I'MiM LATIN.
I "First Form Latin'' was the heading of a paper reud by Mi-s I-'. Mi-
N'aughton. The paper contained so
much of practical value in the tench-
erH ol Latin that a shower t,i appreciation was alterwurds heaped upon
the author's head.
LATIN I'lllll'.l.i'.MS.
. The chnirman puiil lirsl ti-ilnii*- It,
the helplulness of the address. Mr. Vi.
Hudson, M.A., principul ni the Kaslo
high school, pursued the Latin problems, laying a bit of stress upon the
memorizing of the mosl beautiful lines
from latin literature instead of getting b.v heart the grammatical rules.
EDUCATIOXAL IDEALS.
Present day educutionnl ideals were
set forth in nn address by Mr. Mc-
Craig. These ideals were traced from
the embryonic -tare. The clerical idea
covering a thousand years ,,r more;
the culture or scholastic era setting in
lute in iln- seventeenth ri-ntiny. and
the latter da> ideal ol service nr elli-
ciency. Ili vivid interest was made the
tale of holiness training in monastic
schools, where vows ,,f celibacy, poverty and obedience were tnken, It was
demonstrated that this notion of education connected it not in the remotest way with benefits to society.
GEOGRAPHY ILLUMINATES.
This discussion wus followed bj an
address by Mr. Murphy, principal of
the Model school, Vancouver, "n the
tea, hinr ,,f Geography. Mr. Murphy
showed in a most Interesting address
how, by following the realistic method
geography ild be made a most interesting study. Text books he would
dispense with until the pupil should be
able to compile one himself. Tlie first
I ins should lie pructicnl ones on the
physical features of iln- home town or
country side. Nature itself was the
text book used in the lirst lessons,
while truths learned combined with
imagination, provided the pupil with
the materials tor the study of other
;i iitries. Comparison of position anl
general build ol different continents
enabled tlie pupil to determine .-'nuil-
arities in il"- climatic conditions and
the products ,,f the Boil,
Mr. Murphy emphasized lhe importance ol map drawing b.v the pupils.
where they could represent the mountains, rivers etc., with the exclusion
ol ill non-essentials.

Genuine Scotch is Ootid for You.
Scotch Whisky is an excellent tonic and
digestive. Many elderly people find it
absolutely essential to their physical well-
h.injl.
But, like everything else, it benefits the
user only when used in moderation.
Also, ils benefit to yon depends very
largely upon the brand you select.
Use a genuine Hi|»hlanJ Pure Malt Whisky.
Use Watsons a brand lhat for nearly a
century has been held in the highest esteem
wherever Scotch Whisky is to be found.
Distilled in tbe Highlands of Scotland,
from pure Barley Malt, aud by the old fashioned
Pot Still process, our Whisky is aged in Sherry
wood until it is smooth, mellow and neb.

An Active Season's Work is in
Prospect
The spring just opening will see
the beginning of the most active
railway construction and traffic
period in the history of the province. Already the palatial
steamers of the C. P. R. on the
Pacific coast cannot look at handling tee immense transportation
business that is offering. On her
run from Victoria to Vancouver
the Princess Victoria is overcrowded nightly, from forty to a
hundred and fifty passengers
having to sit up all night because
they cannot get berths. The
Princess Charlotte and the Princess Alice will probably also be
put on the run between Seattle
and Vancouver via Victoria, but
from present appearances it is
doubtful whether they will be
able to handle the business, and
the coast cities are praying for
the hastening of the time when
the promised steamers of the
Grand Trunk Pacific Railway and
the Canadian Northern will also
be on the run between the coast
cities to handle the vast and
rapidly growing traffic.
Already there is a demand for
the treble passenger train service
ion the main line. The one through
train is crowded daily, and the
local between Vancouver and
Revelstake, though only inaugurated three months, is already
doing a rapidly growing business.
Great improvements are also
to be made in the permanentway.
The main line of the C. P. R.
through the Frarer Canyon will
be practically re-built. It is
more by the way they feel, but stated the snowsheds at Rogers

modern methods. As a result it
is likely that the American capitalists interested on Smith Creek
will put in their plant to carry on
the hydraulic operations they
have had in contemplation for
some time, and that extensive
deep sinking and dydraulic mining will be carried out on French
and NcCullough and Camp Creeks
There is a strong opinion that at
the mouth of French and McCullough Creeks, that is at the
points where thsse streams join
the main Goldstream river, there
is rich ground, and several mining men are figuring on a scheme
by which this ground can be
worked with a reasonable certainty of its being explored to
bedrock.

expenditure by the city of $4,750
in the purchase u! block 52 is a
short and ready way in which to
bring about a condition of things

land education system of the future.
| We trust, however, for the sake of
Revelstoke, that the citizens who
wish to see such a condition of
thiii^- are few and far between.
W e now come to the other by-law

I property owners onsthe oily voters
1 lisis. That is the by-law to authorise the city to raise a loan of
Ifa n toward- the new school,
the government paying the balance
of the cost of the building estimated ; >"i.'i,lliiii. That anew Bohool

'In- ; iwth of the school popular
tion during the next three or four
years, is admitted and proved i
Already the city has had tn face
an annual expenditure of $1,750 in
leasing and equipping one extra
room and before the jear is out]
two other extra rooms will be required involving a similar expenditure. This kind of thitip will
break up the school syntem, interfering wiib its efficiency, prevent-i
ing economy, and is uosatisfactory
in every way. Jt will involve tbe
city in an extra annual expp.ndi-
ture of hetween $3000 ami $4000,
while the interest and sinking futul
on the $30,000 it is proposed to
borrow for the new school and the
$4,750 for tbe acquisition of bluck :
52 only amount to S'J.i'-VJ, an annual saving to the city of from
$11100 to $1500. There is therefore
nu pood reason why tins by-law
should be opposed, and every
p"i-"h wby it should be endorsed
by all ratepayers who have the
welfare of the city at heart.
We have endeavored to give a
fair review of the school situation
in its relation to the city, The
provincial subsidy of $30,000 it-
too valuable to be lost, and we
hive the Btatemenl of the government these grants are to be entirely discontinued. It i- therefore
up to the citizens to take advantage of the opportunity now before
them to secure an up to-Jute commodious school building, which
will hr a credit to the city and provide accommodation for the probable educational requirements of
the city for -nine years to come,
We hope that tomorrow's poll wi.'l
result in support of the two money
by-laws submitted for these important educational purposes, and
that they will result in a satisfactory settlement of tbe school
problem.

acter of the "Royal Chef," his portrayal
"Heinrich l.etnphouser" being one of*
ie most finished character creations introduced to the stage in man) .1 day. Mr.
Bohn is described as an inventive comedian, keen ami energetic and his complete ni a ^ -re of the rather difficult anJ
laughable mixture of broken English ami
German dialect, is admirable. Almost
equally important is the fact that be has a,
fine singing voice and renders bis num'*
bers in a manner exhibiting cultivation.
The fem'uiiue portion is composed of
attractive young singers and dancers, a.
fact taken advantage oi by capable and
inventive si age management, lo torn*
handsome young creatures into bouquets,
garlands ;-nd tableaux galore. The
ginal Broilers, consisting ol >vung*
girls of exacl size and weight, each one a
dancing expert, is a component part of
the "Chef," and will make their appear-*
ance with main ofthe original member*.
Our playgoers who enjoy smai t, snappy
wit, sweet vacuous melodies and catchy
song hits mus! not overlooked the
forthcoming engagement ol the "Royal
Chef."

Missionary Day, lasl Sunday, in the
Methodist church, wns a splendid
success. Rev. O. M. Kiiiil'onl B.A., of
Kamloops, met the expectations of
the people as the preacher of the day.
The subject in the morning was
based upon Joshua, 18:1, "There re-
iii.iinetli yet much land to lie possessed.'1
The speaker went on to show the
people the great uess of the missionary
field with its nine hundred million
persons who have not yet heard the
iinspi'l of Jesus Christ.
In the evening his text was taken
from Isaiah42:4. ■• lie shull not fail
nor he discouraged till He have sel
judgment on the earth." 'i'he subject
was the certainty of the Oospel of
Cluist being proolnimedtu all peoples.
The congregations were good and the
choir rendered excellent music The
contributions of the people including
lho Sunday Bchool and League, will
total over $'2im.
