Mrs. Dan Hurley left for the coast on a combined business and pleasure trip. A. T. Harman and J. T. Cable drove into town last Saturday for supplies. E. B. Durmond, Indian agent from Lytton was in town this week on a flying visit. Julius Derat left on Friday with his pack train of burros for the Cariboo country. A. W. Phair has completed the installation of the water system for his ranch and the water is flowing satisfactorily. H. B. Strulzel, prospector of P hoenix, left for the Pemberton country in the early part of the week. Mrs. Daunt, wife of Constable Daunt, arrived last evening, and was accompanied by her daughter. Sandy Duguid left for the coast on Tuesday morning to be present at the interrment of his younger brother Pete, who was drowned at Ebourne last Sunday. A. F. Noel arrived on Tuesday from the coast where he has been on a business trip; he left for the mines on Monday morning. G. A. Morton of Clinton who has been spending a few days here; left for home with the Buckskin team which he purchased from M. R. Eagleson last week. Mr. and Mrs. J. Stewart arrived in Lillooet by auto on Sunday last accompanied by T. G. Harman. F. Bell drove the car. Mr. Stewart has lately purchased the Harman estate at Pavilion. Messrs C. Matheson, W. A Ott and J. Erickson, prospectors of the Yukon and latterly from Steamboat mountain, arrived in town this week en route for the Bridge river and Cadwallader district. Divine service will (D.V.) be held in Methodist church tomorrow as follows: Sunday school at 11 a.m. Evening service at 7:30. J. W. Butler of Columbia College will preach. Nelson.—Martin Linquist, fore man at the Napoleon mine, has been missing since Friday, June 9, and it is feared he has been drowned. Toronto. — Word reached the city last night that yesterday morning Rev. H. S. Magee, a well known divine of Toronto, strolled out into the woods from Gleason health resort on East Hill, N. Y. and hanged. Toronto. —W. J. Lindsay surrendered himself to the police yesterday morning at 10 o'clock. For the past five months or more there has been a warrant out for his arrest in connection with the Farmers' bank. Nome.—The famine here has been relieved by the arrival of the provision steamer Corwin, which after a long battle with the drift ice, unloaded her freight on the shore ice Saturday. The steamer Umatila, from San Francisco, with passengers and freig ht, arrived yesterday. Vancouver. — The application made for a jury trial of the action of N. S. Clarke againgt Ford - McConnell, Limited for alleged libel, was yesterday dismissed by Mr. Justice Clement. The case will go over till after the long vacation. Hamilton. Rev. Dr. Lucas, one of the most eloquent ministers in the Methodist church, and well known throughout the world as a temperance lecturer, died in the hospital here aged 77. He spent several years in Australia and England in the interest of the temperance movement. Hamilton. -Brooding over the illness of his mother, who had developed cancer, Mr. Milton Baker, 22 years of age, pastor of the First Spiritualist Church, who came to the city last May from Ohio, ended his life in his boarding house today with prus- sic acid. Dawson.—A strike has been made on Ruby creek, a hundred miles below Fort Gibbons, within sight of the Yukon. It is developing rich pay and a big stam pede is on. There is every indication of it turning out a good camp. o Revelstoke. — Some promising samples of free milling gold quartz were brought in by a local prospector several days ago, and have attracted considerable attention. The quartz was taken from a claim located several years, about eight miles south of the city, the new find being uncovered by assessment work undertaken this season. Mr. T. C. Montgommery, a well known mining man here, has been engaged eo inspect the property. Portage la Prairie.—Eight cars of a north bound freight train were ditched and smashed near Straithclair, Man., at 10 o'clock yesterday. A delay of six hours in the traffic was caused by the wreck and train 97 turned back to Winnipeg. No one was injured, and the cause of the wreck is not known. Nelson.—It was announced at the meeting of the Kootenay Fruit Growers' Union that shipments of strawberries from ranc hers in the district would commence about June 22, and that the season would be at its height by July 1st. The crop will be heavier than last year. ADDITIONAL LOCALS Clarence Stephenson of Ash- arrived last evening on a business trip. A regretable accident occurred this week when a window fell on the head of Mrs. W. Page, badly bruising her. She was attended by Dr. Christie and is progressing favorably. A. Brett and A. Phair have completed the painting of Dan Hurley's house, and from all appearances have made a good job of it. . r PEMBERTON LOCALS Pat Dermody is working steady cutting lumber at his mill. Mrs. J. Roynane is on a visit to the coast cities. ; W. Landsborough has purchased J. Gates' ranch; the purchase price being in the neighbourhood of $6000. W. Spetch and R. Currie who have sick for the past few weeks are now well on the way to recovery. There is a movement on foot to bring a number of Scotch settlers into here from the old couutry. J. McKenzie has started work on claims, situated about four miles from the Pemberton hatchery on the Lillooet river. J. D. Nelson, R.Elliott and R. Armstrong are purchasing large ' quantities of beef, to supply the Howe Sound & Northern con- j struction camps. R. Hutching- son has the contract for the second ten miles out of Howe Sound and is at present putting in the bridges for same. Joe Roynane who has been to the coast to get married is expected home any day now with his wife. Considerable improvements a being made at the Hatchery th >« days; at present there are seLci> men working. Mr. Punch has charge of the road gang, the road is completed as far as the Rien ranch, leaving about twenty miles to be constructed. There are quite a number of prospectors in our midst these days, nine being in our immediate vicinity. It is reported that R. McCluer has struck a large body of ore near Green lake. All trails are now open, the latest arrivals over the Squamish Pemberton trail are 'Bob', McEvoy. Roy Elliott. Armstrong and J. D. Nelson. E. The institution is planned on an up-to-date design and when completed will be a modern one, fully equipped in a plain useful style with the latest improvements.
