THE ULLOOET Vol. I No. 46 SATURDAY, JUNE 3, 1911 I LOCAL BREVITIES Wedding bells will ring again ! This is getting to be an epidemic H. L. Phair, (Bert) has taken over his old stand at the Victoria hotel. A. F. Noel left Sunday morning for the coast on a combined business and pleasure trip. Chas. Morgan left on Tuesday for Ashcroft where he will take over the mechanical department of the Journal. Martin Chenault of the Jones ranch passed Sunday in town riding in on one of the imported Welsh ponies. Dr. Christie left for the coast on Sunday to visit his wife and son at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Manion. Mrs. Perry and Mrs. Copp accompanied and guided by Mrs. A. F. Noel accomplished their trip to the Coronation mines at Cadwallader in very good time. Messrs. C. and H. Pollard of Clinton arrived Monday and on Tuesday paid a visit to their old friend Ike. Hunt at Dr. Jones' ranche and returned home on Wednesday. Provincial Constable Beyts has resigned his commission in the service and intends to leave in the near future for Pemberton to look after his interest there. A. 0. N. Daunt of Ashcroft has been appointed Constable. Dougal McDonald Jr. of Watson Bar arrived Tuesday on a visit to Lillooet bringing certain tackle that belongs to the Government stores, which were used in the construction of the ferry at Big Bar which is now in good working condition. The local enumerators stared on their commission Thursday and are as follows: S. Gibbs, has the east side of the Fraser, Pavilion and upper Hat creek; Duncan McDonald, Seton and Anderson lakes and Pemberton Meadows; C. D. Wray, Lillooet, west side of Fraser to Texas creek and the Bridge river district; J. H. S. Rowbottom, west side of Fraser to Lone Cabin creek, upper Churn creek, Big creek, upper Chilicotin, Chilco and Tatla lakes. Local and District Improve R. T. Buxton of Vancouver traveller for Messrs Lesser Dickey and Gross did considerable business in town Tuesday, Frank Holten who left for the Pioneer to start operations arrived safely at Gunn creek and would make the mine on Tuesday Fred Foster and T. C. Watson returned to their camp on Tuesday with supplies for the purpose of further prospecting. Joe Shuster arrived at Gunn creek with his bunch of cattle. Joe has opened up a stopping house and now the boys at the mines are satisfied. W. W. Jones of Fairhaven ranch, Bridge river came into town this week for provisions; he is very enthuiastic over his anticipated fruit crop. The crops throughout the Lillooet district are looking exceedingly well, and from all appearances there will be a good yield this year. C. W. Tipping who has been working at the Coronation mines at Cadwallader came down Tuesday and left on Wedneeday for the coast. He reports that all the boys are well at the mine. Messrs McGillvary and Thompson arrived in Lillooet Monday en route to the Cariboo. These prospectors have just arrived from Hedley City where they were employed last winter. P. H. Connor of Vancouver left on Tuesday after spending several weeks in Lillooet and vicinity. He will shortly return from the coast and prospect in the neighbourhood of Cadwallader and McGillvary creeks. Rev. W. Bromwich of Ashcroft arrived Friday and intends to make Lillooet his permanent home which will make quite an addition to the Lillooet family, as he will bring his wife and family with him. D. Hurley left for the Lome mines Saturday with the intention of spending the rest of the seacon there. More men will shortly be employed including an amalgator as the running of the mill will commence as soon as the ditch, flume and pipes are in condition. C. Holbrook of North Fork is at present engaged in Hydraulic work on the main Bridge river above the junction of the North fork and expects shortly to commence operations with the monitor, also the prospects look exceedingly good. G. J. Riches, proprietor of the Nicola Valley Transfer Co. of Merrit accompanied by Mr. N. Hone of Vancouver were passengers from Lytton. It is their intention to proceed to Pemberton Meadows to investigate cer a n investments in real estate which they control in that section, truy are highly pleased with the location and appearance of Lillooet. Prospectors and miners continue to arrive in our midst, and from all quarters comes the report that outsiders are beginning to turn their eyes towards Lillooet. There is satisfaction in being just far enough away from the large towns to prevent an in- flex of undesirables. With the advent of the railway, this will be the place for some good, energetic and enterprising people, but no place for sluggards or bums, so if you are of the latter class keep away for this community will not tolerate you. We note with pleasure that our necessary wants are one by one being supplied, the latest is the appointment of Will Haylmore as Fire Warden of this district No. 37. This was a necessity that has long been felt, especially in the Western part of the district, with which Will acquainted. At- i ten tion is called to the Fire act; for instance pre-emptors and all persons clearing land must obtain permission from the local fire warden to light fires and burn bush, as it is illegal to light fires from May 1, to October 1 without permit from local warden Warning is also given to campers and prospectors to use the utmost descretion with regard to camp fires, as it is the intention of the government to prosecute any person causing Forest fires or in any way infringing on the meaning of the act; also it is the duty of lumbermen, millmen and others employing labour near the woods that, in the event of fire breaking out, they must immediately notify the fire wayden. $2.00 Per Year LOCAL BREVITIES Henry Schwarty returned from his trip to Churn creek Tuesday. Larry Kearv and Bert Williams arrived in town this week. F. H. Kinder arrived home this week from his trip to the east. Mr. and Mrs. Mellott spent Sunday in town and were the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Page. Tom Manson returned Wednesday from his trip into Soda creek and repots having made a very successful trip. The auto Lillooet was in great demand on Sunday, making numerous trips between the lake and Lillooet. Rev. W. Bromwich arrived in town last evening, he was accompanied by Mrs. Bromwich and three children and are residing at the manse. Miss McDonald and Miss Elliott of Vancouver were passengers on the Lytton stage last evening; they are another addition to the Victoria hotel staff. Rev. H. C. T. Pelham arrived from Lytton on Saturday having recently arrived from London, England, where he has for the past four years been engaged in ecclesiastical work among the financially poor people. He will be in charge of the upper country district with two other clergymen and three laymen. The district is an extensive one, being considerably larger than the whole of England. Services were held morning and evening which were well represented by the local public. Mr. Pelham made quite a number of friends during his short stay and is peculiarly adapted for the work to which he has been appointed. A very pretty wedding took place in the Methodist church on Sunday evening, when Rev. W. Bromwich united in marriage Florence Mclntyre to William Page both of Lillooet. The bride wore a pretty dress of Nun's veiling trimmed with Sequim. She was attended by Katie McLeod. Frank Mclntjre acted as best man. We join with their many friends in wishing them a very happy and prosperous life.
