LOCAL BREVITIES It is with pleasure that we are able to announce "wedding bells" for the 12th inst. Brett and Phair Co. are making a goob job of C. McCaffery's house, Wm. Dickey and Wm. Riley report weather conditions much milder down the river. R. A. Dorrell arrived in town Monday from Ashcroft, and from appearances is as fond of the "rod" as ever. Harry and Mrs. Logan drove into town Saturday from the 19- mile house ranch, and reports all O.K. in that vicinity. Rev. W. Bromwich arrived on Wednesday and spent the week visiting. He will hold service in the Methodist church tomorrow evening at 7.30. Jack Arthurs left for his ranch on the Portage last Sunday, he intends to make some alterations to his house and also do some clearing. Bert Spetch of Summit Lake ranch came into town on Wednesday for supplies; he reports good weather at the Portage also the snow is fast disappearing. Wm. Durban returned Sunday from his ranch on the Short Portage where he has been clearing, he had a visit from some of the town boys and treated them hospitably in his new cabin. Frank Bard formerly amalgamator at the Lome stamp mill paid a visit to town for the week end. He is at present building a penstock at the Pavilion Flour mill which will be run to full extent this Fall. 'Miller,' entertainer, of North Fork arrived in town Wednesday and state fhat all the boys are working ha 1 at their claims and expect to make a good clean up. In all there are about twelve men working the river besides numerous Indians. W. T. Smith arrived from Vancouver Tuesday to look after his interests here; he has large interests at Bridge river and McGill- vary creek. Mr. Smith says there will be quite a number of prospectors coming into Lillooet this year. TELEGRAPHIC COMMUNICATIONS «r Victoria.—The Dominion Government has ordered enquiry into the loss of the Steamer Sechelt. Ottawa. —Hon. Mackenzie King will try and effect a settlement between the coal miners and the operators in Alberta. Portland.—Jury brought in a verdict of "not true bill" against Whalen. Government could not provr that he disposed of the gold bullion through the mails. St Petersburg.—Rumor is current tonight that Chinese have surrounded and are attacking Blagovestchenc, the capital of Amur Province, in Asiatic Russia Cordova, Alas.—The last spike completing the Copper River and Northwestern railway between Cordova and Kennelcott, where Bonanza Copper mountain is situated, was driven yesterday. Trains will be in operation over the entire line in two days and ore will be shipped for Tacoma smelter Tuesday. The line is 197 miles long and cost twenty million dollars. High Bar News The game warden paid us an official visit a few days ago. Spring is here and seeding is in progress on all of the ranches in this vicinity. Miss McDonald who has been very ill is able to be about again and is well on the road to recovery. Malcolm McDonald has secured most of the timbers which are necessary for the completion of his house near the old homestead The usual number of Indians are mining at Black point putting in Coffer dams and Wing dams; from their happy faces they are doing well financially. Stewart, G.T.P. packer was to Watson Bar for the balance of the horses, which he intends to take to Boyl's pasture, Empire valley, there are about ninety head in all. Louisville, Ky. —Two thousand brewery workers will strike today unless granted an increase of five per cent. Chicago. - Telegraphers on the Illinois railway threaten to strike today unless an increase of 20per cent, in salary is granted. Fernie. - Mass meeting of the Coal Creek and Fernie miners was held here today. Meeting endorsed position taken by representatives at-the Calgary Conference, thus making it certain that the mines will be closed down today. New York.—The work of the Grand Jury now investigating the Carnegie Trust Co. promises some sensational evidence regarding the banking conditions in the city. Expect to prove that some banks have beeen bribing persons who brought them business. It has been shown that Carnegie Trust Co. maintained a fund of a million and a half dollars for this purpose and that it paid $15,000 to have its ex-president elected trustee of Cornell University. Local Happenings J. T. Cable from the Lillooet Stud stables spent a few days in town. There is some of the most promising stock at the ranch which from Cable's account will be winning at the next race meetings at the coast. He intends taking a string through to Regina shortly. The first run of the Auto "Lillooet" for this season occurred on Thursday when Lee Loring the Chaffeur for W. Manson responded to a telegraphic call to Lytton. He is interested in claims on Cadwallader creek and as soon as the weather permits will commence operations. Antonio Viera, bootmaker left today for his ranch on Bridge river, he intends building fence and completing his house. \e expects to be away about two weeks. E. J. Taylor returned from his trip to Gunn creek on Bridge river last Monday. He reports about six inches of snow at Fair- haven and Tyaughton. the Mission Mt. trail is mushy. He left for the coast on Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Noel came into town by Auto on Friday after spending the winter visiting at the coast cities and will shortly leave for Cadwallader creek to commence operations on the Ben D'Or mine.
