Smith arrived in town by way of Ashcroft to take up a position in the Victoria hotel. George Gibson rancher on the North Fork of Bridge river is in town this week for supplies. E. Dougherty of Maiden creek spent a few days in town this week. Miss Katie McLeod arrived in town this week to take a position on the Victoria Hotel staff. Messrs. Burdette, Hamilton. Leo Seabring and Tom Hurley left for Bridge river last Sunday. Joe Watkinson of Fosters Bar. made a flying trip to town this week; he came for the doctor to go to Alex Lochore. Ray Elliott left on Thursday for Pemberton Meadows in company with Mr. McKenzie, storekeeper at Pemberton. Henry Brown formerly of Empire Valley and now in real estate in Vancouver, arrived here on Sunday and left Monday morning for Pemberton Meadows on business. J. Pollard, School Inspector from Kamloops, spent a few days here this week in connection with the school; we understand there are some improvements under consideration. Mr. Nelson, the chief on the Howe Sound and Northern railroad survey, left town on Thursday morning for Pemberton Meadows and Lillooet lake to make survey of Lower Lillooet for the purpose of a draining scheme for the submerged lands on the meadows. It is with regret that we learn of the accident which has fallen to the lot of Alex Lochore. Dr. Christie had a sudden call down the river to Rosebank ranch, on Thursday. Mr. A Lochore having broken his left leg just above the ankle, caused by a large piece of block ice falling on it. The doctor returned to town on Friday, after having set the limb. Jack McPhail was the driver and the roads being good he made a fast trip. VIOLATION OF TREATY London. — The relations between Russia and China are now strained to breaking point. Russia has notified Great Gritain, France and Germany of her intention to make military demonstration on the Chinese frontier, owing to China's persistent violation of the St. Fetersburg treaty of 1881. Vital questions involved are free trade in Mongolia, the extra territorial concession of Russia and China and the establishment of a Russian consulate at Keobdo, Mongolia. Sealing Treaty Ottawa.— A treaty has been signed between the United States and Great Britain on behalf of Canada, for the cessation, for a limited term of years, by the sealers of both countries. Local News Wedding Bells are expected in our midst shortly. McCaffery won out in the law- at Lytton this week. The Over Seas club bids fair to be a great success. Dick Butler of North Fork is spending a few days in town. E. F. Peters arrived in town from the coast last evening. Paul Santini of Foutain, is spending a few days in town. Do you get the Advance. No wonder it is said that man evoluted from brute creation when the habit of creeping and crawling is so prominent in this fair world of ours. A very pleasant and much enjoyed outing was spent last evening at Mr. Ledgerwood's residence near Seton lake. The occasion being a surprise party. The party went in sleighs and cutters, and after a good dance left for home at 5 a.m. Death of Member ^^^ Charlottetown, P.I.W.- Wm. Laird, Liberal representative in in the Provincial Legislature for Queens, is dead, he was 76 years of age. ANNEXATION OF CANADA Washington. — Representative Bennett of New York, Republican, who voted against reciprocity, has introduced a resolution in the House requesting the President to enter negotiations with the British Government looking to the annexation of Canada to the United States. The resolution was referred to the Committee of foreign affairs. Religious Fanatics St. Petersburg.—Religious fanatics *Th their frenzy took a solemn vow not to sleep, eat or drink until the holy synod rescinds the order transferring a priest to another parish. Thousands of them were cooped up in the church for several days on point of death from starvation. The intensity of the suffering is distressing to witness. Turn First Sod Victoria. - Leiut. Governor Patteison will turn the first sod on the Canadian Northern Railway connecting this city with Barclay Sound. The event takes place today, the members of the Legislature will be in attendance Explosion Moraqua, Nicaraqua. —A fatal explosion has just occurred in barracks here. Three soldiers were killed, seven thousand rifles and ten million cartridges were destroyed. The barracks are a complete wreck. Reciprocity Condemned Victoria, B.C.—The Provincial Grand Lodge of Orangemen concluded their annual session here today. The Dominion Governments are in favor of the project and the safety and welfare of the natives is assured. There is to be broncho busters clad in native costume, Indian Klookh- men basket makers, tenasse papooses in the native carrj ing I ?s- kets, clothed in the many colored costumes of the Lillooet Indians, and a genuine Indian princess decked cut in feathus, leacssr.d buckskin. Joe. DeShields goes as interpreter. Much credit is due to Mr. Cargile for the manner in which he is endeavouring to make the exhibition a success. All kinds of old stone implements and Indian curieos will be taken along. It is also the intention to take a brass band of ten instruments. Typhoid Epidemic Ottawa. - The Typhoid epidemic is spreading ar an alarming rate. There are now over six hundred cases and twenty- two deaths. U.S.A. Ambassador Washington.—John Hays Hammond has been appointed United States special Ambassador to the Coronation of King George V. Fire Los Angeles, Cal. —The Bvrene office building and several retail stores have just been destroyed by fire. The loss is estimated at half a million dollars.
