The old trail made in connection with the government railway explorations of 1874-76, is still distinguishable in places but is of little service. The unfavorable news from tbe Cache has not prevented the influx of people that will go in there. Many people wont believe the story we published as te the unsatisfactory results obiniiied. and argue that if it wero no Itood Price and his friends would not want to get back there so soon. Thi) also point, out that it is well-known that placer gold exists in more or less quantities all the way atom.' the great western valley ol the Rockies from Gul en to ihe far north, and that even if Swift Current is no good there are thousands of localities in this valley yet unprospected, in many parts of which payable gold is almost tie tnln to be found, and they point to the facts of Manson creek, Nation river, Omenica, Peace, Parsnip and Findlay rivers, all connected with this basin, in all of which payable gold hus been found in confirmation. People therefore continue to arrange for their projected expeditions to the north and continue to outfit at Golden and get their psi-k trslhs in readiness for the trip. Dear Sir,Before leaving (or Vic- tonal .,'U'iii'il your communication referrrittg to ilie action of the Golden Board of Trade recommending certain appropriations from the legislative train for the ensuing year. I took occasion to submit the suggestions conveyed to me while at Victoria, urging upon the attention of the Gov* .'rumour, what I considered warranted nv iici ion in doing so. It. must be orue in n ind that the appropriations olrendy ramie for roads, trails and bridges cannot be exceeded this year unless possibly under the "Toll Roads Act," and for an appropriation under this there would need to be the strong- est possible assurance of an output sufficient to warrant the expenditure. First in regard :o the McMurdo district road. I have the assurance thai this would be liberally assisted in conjunction with some company largely interested in rhe construction of such a road and it is my opinion that the Board of Trade should submit a proposition lo the Bennison Company, for carrying out this project, i The otliot- evpsuli'inros ss recommended for trails and road repairs can be largely provided fur out of this year's grant and tbe necessary instructions will be given at once b) the Chief Commissioner of Lands and Works. The report is exceedingly well compiled and got up, and ws congratulate the Provincial Mineralogist, Mr. W. F. Robertson, on tke care and research displayed by hia in his first compilation since assuming office, Tbe illustrations are a fin* feature of the publication, and seme of the photographs taken by Mr. Robertson in this district last year are th* finest that have yet been publishsd in the Province. It will be remembered that Mr. Rnlienson spent most of last season in East Kootenay and a large portion of the report Is taken up with his description of the mining camps of the district visited by him. This portion of rsport is disappointing, as might have been expected from the limited nature of tbe development work. Mr. Robertson is undoubtedly moat conscientious and painstaking in the discharge of his official duties, and we can understand that, with the limited devdopment with which he had to deal, he was often placed at such disadvantage that it was impossibls t* form a satisfactory estimate of a property, especially where it was in th* location, stage, as many of these properties which he visited were found to be. Probably, too, Mr. Robertson bad to depend in aome cases on information which was notes reliable aa it might have been. For instsnee he states there is no mineral visible on the Favorite claim in the International Basin, whertaS there is on that claim one of tbe finest lsads in th* country a lead that is known as tbe Bennison lead, on the property ef the Kootenay Consolidated Company, on the other side of the mountain. Assays running from $10 to $600 havs been obtained from the exposures of this lead on th* Favorite claim, so that this official report is most damnatory to this property without just cause, and either from oversight or bad information probably the latter, as, ii we recollect aright, the ground was covered with uow when Mr. Robertson visited th* property, so that he was probably tan- able to see it hat the exposures were. It is a matter cf regret that Mr. Robertson had not seen the Bennison property, or the Vermont creek property, on both of which a large amount of development work has been done. Among ihe photographs of local interest attached to the report ar* views on thi- Columbia at McMurdo House, pack-trains swimming th* river at same place, falls on Bugaboo creek, hsad of Bugaboo with camp of Governmeet party and the Gold Commissioner in the foreground, th* Duchess on Lake Windermere, th* Delphine pack train leaving tbe Salmon Beds, Thunder Hill concentrator, cut bank at Dutch creek, Burns basin, Glacier at head of Middle fork of Spillimachene, Sinclair Hot Springs, International Basin, Sinclair Pass, Mt. A Clever Swindle Which \Va* Sue- cemifnlly Worked In I'iu'Ih. Swindling is us monotonous as ethics or mutheuiatics, nnd the various wuyi and means resorted to in the last decade of the nineteenth century for obtaining possession of other people's money were matters of common knowledgb in the Egypt of Rnmeses the Great. But the Parisian police now affirm that a new departure has been made on the bank; of the Seine. And this is how it wall worked: An office was hired in a good business street by the inventor of the trick, who assumed the title ot* somebody and company, chemical agents. Being convinced advocates of women's rights, they employed some members of the fair sex. who dressed in the height of fashion, used the most fashionable perfumes and then visited singly the best apothecaries' shop. One of these fair, false emissaries would stop her cab at the chemists, come in and. taking out her purse, ask for another bottle of Dr Beaumont's elixir. "Dr. Beaumont's what?" said the young man behind the counter. "Theelixir. Don't yon know?' "No: I mil afraid I never heard of it.' "Oh, how tiresome, and my poor rheumatic husband will Im so disiippointedl Are yon sure it was not hero that our servant bought it before?" "No, ma- dame: it wus not here. Where is it sold wholesale?" "It is sold wholesale, I think" And here the lady showed the ticket on the bottle. "It costs 8 francs. (' That sumo day the chemist bought the elixir wholesale, laying in u fair stock of it, and meanwhile many of the confreres were doing likewise. But, as nobody called nny more on the obliging chemists to bny the elixir, one of the curious confraternity analyzed this specific which was supposed to relieve rheumatics. He found that it was at least perfectly harmless, consisting of water colored by coffee grounds. The police were then let loose npen the ladies and the chemical agents, but they had all moved on, leaving no address* They are said to havo netted abont 10.* 000 frant-B by the trick.London Telegraph. Mr. Higginson, late Crown Timber Agent for British Columbia, reported to tho Department that lis hud received several applications for tbt purchase of lott in thit townsite, but had refused to entertain them for th. reason that tht land lay within the boundar- ies staked off by the Railway Company. In July of 1886, Mr. Drinkwater, Secretary of the Company, wrote to the Department that many of the squatters on tht townsite were of a very objectionable character, and it would be very desirable that his Company should control the whole of thi land adjoining and comprising the townsite, On September the 16th of the same year, the 1st. Hon. Mr. White, then Minster of tb. Interior, wrote to Sir William Van Home that he was prepared to give to the Company ao much laud as it was entitled to under Clause 10 of the Contract between the Company and the Government; and in addition to sell, upon such terms as might be agreed upon, subject of course to tbo Company arranging with the people who bad looated upoo the property, tuoh furthtr arm at that Company might deein ntoMiary to giv* control within that ana.
