A.lveriiai..-11-uit r..tua mails kiiuu.i ouappli- catior 'o The SaM-B En' P-bll.ki-s Cirri, SATURDAY, JAN. 25, 1890. Since the days ol Lord Di.fferin the 'boundless resources of B.C.,'- has heen a by-word among us, and now it is being realized us very nearly ex proising what we havo here. B.C. is now become the centre of interest in the mining world und is-since the South African panicto England what Cripple Creek is to the United States. Everyone is talking about it and rends! with interest anything published concerning it. A cablegram from London a few days brick suys : ''The question of the development of mines iu B.C. is attracting much attention iu the'financial circlet in the city ami it is probable several mining experts will visit that Province shortly. If tlie reports made by them of the results of their investigations shnll prove favorable, a large influx of British capital may be expected." For the last 12 or 15 years British Columbia has bean known to possess vast deposits'of mineral wealth and still those have until the present day been totally undeveloped, how can we explain thi*.? In other countries where valuable properties are discovered, they, with very few exceptions have been immediately placed upon the market, and a milling industry ut once sprung up iu that neighborhood. At present British Columbia, excluding coul and gold has produced nothing and yet without doubt she contains . more mineral wealth thnti any other country of her size. Of course in many instances tlie best deposits have been discovered by poor prospectors who had neither money nor influence, still wariting au exorbitant price for their claims and therefore could not place then, upon th,< market. When once an excitement is reigning nothing will bring tho prospectors to reason or to the market value of his property and he invariably wants the price of a well developed mine for a few surface prospects, und always a large amount of cash down, which of course undeveloped property will not warrant. This is one of thoevilsB.C, hns luul to contend with in the development of her wealth, and there is that she in the utmost corner of tho globe and from markets distant. These are now becoming things of the past however..and some of the districts, with the best, transportation Similar to other instances the discovery of gold iu pincers lad to the discovery of the now world-renowned Paris, (or more commonly termed Trend well) ledge. On the 27th ot January, 1882, prospectors from June-iii crossed Ou-.tiiie.Kix Channel io the Douglas Island shore nnd found "pay dirt" upon the bench, uud .he following March commenced washing upon the ground now known as the Ready Bullion, and in the lirst trial run :i clean-up at the end ol three days yielded twenty-seven ounces ol gold dnst. This created quiie a little ex- citment, and led to the discovery of another similar deposit of auriferous dirt uud deco.nposed quartz, and iu washing the gravel from the bod-rook upon this discovery tbe great Tread- well ledgo was exposed. One Peter Eriissard, more commonly known us 'French Pete," located ibe quartz ledj-e, naming it the Paris. Notwithstanding Peter's claim lo the ground aud the subsequent transfer of tbe same to other parlies, placer miners, by right might, from 1882 to 1884 held j the surface ground and washed out amounts variously estimated lit from -J.'iO.OOO 'to $1C0,CC0. Nothing wus done by the original locator iu the way oE developing lhe mine, ns be dee.ued the ore of too low grade to l.o worked at a profit, The attention of ono John Treudwell. a far-seeing miner, was culled to the property, and he made a quiet examination of the ledge and tho facilities for working and opening it up, tested .he ore und opened negotiations for its purchase, "French Pete," deeming the mine oi no practical value, let it go it is stated, for $400. Itumediiitly utter the transfer, Mr. Treudwell rganized tlm Alaska Mill and Mining Company, commenced driving a cross cut prospect tunnel, and erected a live stai."p mill to test by mill-run tha value of the ores as the tunnel wus being driven across the ledge. When the cross cut reached the opposite wall it showed up a ledge 400 feet iu width of nearly solid quartz; ubd ihe little live stump mill demonstrated Hint the average value of the ore wus sufficient to make the mine pay if worked on a largo and systematic bciiIo, and in 1883 the company built a wharf and erected a 120-stainp mill, and iu W.'-O uddud tho present chlorinution works to the plant, to whicli additions inni many improvements have been added since. In 1888 they doubled the capacity of .he mill, making it a plant of 240 stamps, In 1889 the transfer of the entire property wus made to the Alaska Treudwell Gold Mining Company. While Mr. Treadwell was developing the Paris, he acquired for [The works uud mine aro lighted : throughout with electricity, ami rail* I roads connect nil the different branches, The sunups, -^d in number, weigh each HiiO pounds, stroke seven inches I with 90 drops i-i thu minute, ami the 'mill bus a capacity ot about 700 tons ot ore per day, ami the cliloi'iuu- i tion works a capacity of eighteen tons of Sulphurets daily. The adoption of the Dominion land act form in recording mining claims as suggested would not meud the matter as tbe question of occupation would still come in, A case in poiut may be cited. Iu this neighborhood a homestead was takeu up, but the duties neglected; another came along and restaked it, intending to make it a townsite, but he also ignored the conditions, for, instead of residing upon the land (personal residence Iieing required,) lie gulivants round Goldteu enjoying the gaieties thereof. The land lies wide open now to him who is not afraid, unless indeed "jumping has got to stop." If Mr. Aylmer would instead of attempting to further patch tbe nineral act of 1891 with ita intricate amendments, endeavor to get it thrown out doors, he would be doing good service lo his country.
