mgi ^rww W**^ w TSr" (2» —V '•V -T/ SOUTH FORT GEORGE, B. C, SATURDAY, APRIL 19, 1913. $3 PER ANNUM Townsite Promoter Will Again Lead His Henchmen in a Last Desperate Attempt to Move prince George Depot Nearer to His Group of Townsites. According to the coast press the Fort George crowd are again invoking the aid of their legal battery to prevent the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway from locating their depot on the Prince George townsite where they wish. By the Fort George crowd, The Herald refers to the Natural Resources Security Company, the Fort George Board of Trade, which that concern's lawyers created, and which is manned by the trusty followers of the townsite organization; the lobbying lawyers of the townsite company, thc newspapers which do its bidding in return for advertising contracts or stock subscriptions, and thc vast army of people who have purchased Fort George lots, and who will sign anything presented to them which may serve to enhance the doubtful value of their properties. Early last year the Fort George people took an application before the railway commission which requested that body to order the location of thc Oraid Trunk Pacif.c depot at a point not further than 1900 feet east of the eastern boundary of their townsite, a street named Fraser Avenue, The late Chairman Mabee, stated that he could give no decision in tlie matter of a station location when the railway wnn hundreds of miles away, as it then was. The session ended, however, in a sort of tacit understanding tbat the depot would not be nearer than 3000 feet to the Fraser river. The Grand Trunk Pacific representatives stated that from the Fraser river tor a distance of 3000 feet west on their line through the Prince George town- site, there extended a three per cent grade, They could not, in any event, locate the depot on this heavy gradient. It also transpired, at the' session of the railway commission, that the Natural Resources Security Company, who made the application, had sold lots on the statement that the depot would be located within certain confines on the Grand Trunk property near the Fort George properties, The application was obviously made for the purpose of prevailing upon the railroad commission to issue orders which would have the effect of supporting the advertised statements of the townsite concern. The commission, however, could not see its way to so far assist the lot- selling company, The Natural Resources Security Company have behind them the names of the thousands of people to whom they have sold 25-foot lots In the Fort George townsites. Just what influence the fact of these People lending their Biraport to the application will have before the railroad commission remains to be seen. To The Herald, it appears that the fai-t of a promoter being able to "ell thiB enormous quantity of lotB upon representations made months ■"•fore they are permitted to be even substantiated, should, if properly Presented be sufficient to defeat the application in its earliest stages. The Herald does not believe that j >e townsite people hope to win any- ntlR favorable to their proposition ln this application. We believe that th(> people behind the townBites ^"-l* He to the weBt of the Prince u<*°rge townsites, are using ob- «f»ctlonist tactics in an endeavor to a«i'n«iate the value of the railway »«npanyB townsite, and to prevent «"- marketing of that property^ Unas lute as possible, for, we underbid, the Natural Resources Becur- by c°f<>Pany still have a large num- w of lots which they wish to un- *« on the public, and if the vivid tVtVhey have Proclftlmed '°r the th,.i BC towns'tes falls short of vent, WOTd PictureB' tbelr ,uture 08 ln thl8 branch of human en- Mr. Morley Donaldson, vice-president and general manager of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, has very definite ideas regarding the - - - |dlate of the completion of the Grand the practical effect of | Trunk paciflc_ In Winnipeg the other .*._. *.— _u_* thg flrBt traln deavor will perhaps not be such a marked success—financially. The application will, of course, be fought strenuously. To comply with the application the railway commission would change the plans of the Prince George townsite entirely, and would establish a precedent which would have allowing townsite' promoters who operate upon the future assured a particular territory by railroad enterprises, to step in ahead of them in the vicinity of their important points and, having created large vested interests upon doubtful representations, use the power of their argument to obtain such . privileges as they had advertised as assured advantages. In other words the railway commission would be making good the bluff of the townsite promoter. ANNOUNCES DATE OF FIRST THROUGH TRAIN Vice-president of Transcontinental Railway Company Says September, 1914-Opin- ion Is Divided. ROYAL BANK OF CANADA BASEBALL CLUB NBW PREPAREBJOR SEASON Trustee Cooke Re-elected-Plans for Season's Games Discuss- Opening Contest Probable for May 24th. A meeting of the baseball club was held here this week. Mr. W. F. Cooke who so successfully filled the delicate position of trustee for the paat season, was elected to the same position for the ensuing season. To be trustee of a baseball team, where such conditions exist between towns as the healthy rivalry of the places hereabouts, requires the tact and diplomacy of a Disraeli, the tenacity of a suffragette, tbe executive ability of a Tammany Hall politician, and the courage ot a gladiator. There is only one character known to northern history who requires these qualities, and others—the referee, who should go disguised and be a two-gun man. The meeting was well attended, and the business of the team was speedily transacted. A proposal was advanced by which it ls hoped that the usual Sunday baseball games may be carried on during the coming summer. It is suggested that the game on May 24th., shall be played on the diamond at Central Fort George, and that ot July 1st., on the South Fort George diamond. The Sunday games, it is suggested, should be played on a neutral diamond to be made on tbe old- Indian reserve. This diamond could be easily laid out on the land at the foot ot the bill, and it ls suggested that it could be commanded by a grand stand. The Attorney General's department have, through the local police officers, taken a stand against Sunday games to which admission is charged. The Herald, in common with every other opinion of a reasonable nature, stands for Sunday baseball. On tbe other hand, however, we are of the opinion that this vexed question should not conform to thc opinion of the majority without regard to the objections raised on the grounds of religious prejudice or Sunday observance. Therefore the games should be played In a locality where no residents can be disturbed in any manner. day he Btated that .^^^^^^^^ from Winnipeg to Prince Rupert would leave the Manitoba city on September 14th. 1914. From the eastern end of steel the distance to thiB place is now about 160 miles. Over the entire length of this distance .the contractors are busy. There is a big Uattery of steam shovels working along the Fraser river, and many of these will be scowed down stream for work on the big cuts west of here as soon as the stage of water will permit. The biggest earth cut on the uncompleted portion of the road lies on the Nechaco river between here and Fraser lake. This cut will keep the shovels busy for months, Mr. Donaldson stated in Winnipeg that the railway company will lay 298 miles ot steel this year. This steel will be laid on the main line from the eastern end ot the steel 162 miles Into Pronce George. The two bridges are to be built across the Fraser river, one here and the other near the mouth of Bear river, and these Mr. Donaldson expects will be ready for the steel by the time it reaches there. On the main line trom Prince Rupert, steel Is already at Boulder Gulch, past Hazelton, and a viaduct steel bridge now In course of erection over the gulch will be completed by April 25. Work will proceed steadily through to Burns lake, a distance of 115 mlles, on tracklaying, at a steady rate of \\ miles a day. The Herald does not expect to see the steel here before March 1914. In our opinion, based upon the expressions of opinion of men who are engaged in construction work, ths steel will do well to reach the Willow river by the end of the year, under favonable conditions. The Willow river is twenty five miles up the Fraser from 'this point. Mr. Donaldson announces officially that there are 524 miles between the eastern and western ends ot steel. Ot this distance he expects to build 302 miles this summer and leave 222 miles to be built next summer. The vice-president also expects the two ends ot steel tied up by September the first, and the first train will leave Winnipeg 14 days later. There is much ballasting to be done, he states, before his company can announce the inauguration ot a summer schedule. CONTRACT LET FOR BUSINESS BLOCK A. Albert Johnson, proprietor of the Hotel Northern, the pioneer hotel man of the Fort George district, has let a contract for the building of a 30x60 store and office building on a lot adjoining his hotel on Hamilton Avenue. The building will contain two large stores and will have offices on the second floor. Work on the buildings will commence immediately. The contract for building was awarded to Messrs. Bronger & Flynn. Mr. Johnson is continually showing his faith in the town by progressive methods and heavy investment. This new enterprise marks his attitude still further. WINNIPEG FIREBUG TELLS 0FJ1S CRIMES Waa Responsible for 200 Fires in the Prairie Capital in Which Seven Lives and a Million in Property Lost. Immeasurably worse than was ever dreamed by the local police is the terrible record which James Dodds, the firebug set for himself when he made a statement to Chief ot police McPherson, says a Winnipeg despatch. The pyromaniac asked to have a detective sent to his cell, and on his arrival said he wanted to talk to the chief, as he had been thinking over all of his work and it had been bothering him since his incarceration and he wished to relieve his mind of the load he was carry- The Royal Bank of Canada will shortly let a contract for the building of a modern office building on their property, which is situated at the corner of Hamilton avenue and Fourth street. Mr. H. C. Seaman, manager ot the branch, gave out this information this week. "The plans for the building" he said, "are now on the way here, and until they arrive I can give no exact Information as to the type ot building to be erected, but you may be assured that it will be a credit to the town." The Royal Bank, and its predecessor, the Traders, has been doing business here, for the past few years in the building of the Fort George Timber and Trading Company, on Second Street. These premises, they have long realized, were not adequate for the rapidly Increasing banking business which is being done here. The officers of the bank investigated the situation very thoroughly before coming to the conclusion arrived at, and ln announcing the forthcoming bank building on Fourth street, at this time, the Herald be- _, lieves tbat a strong endorsement of the stability and established importance ot this town is registered. The Bank ot Ottawa, which carries the account of Messrs. Foley, Welch, ft Stewart, will open a branch here within the next few months. It Is a matter ot some speculation as to where this branch will be located, and in this connection The Herald believes tbat the officers ot that institution will appreciate tbe Importance ot serving the public trom tbe most convenient point, and we anticipate seeing the building of the Bank ot Ottawa also In South Fort George. In contrast to the branches of banks In the Nechaco townsites, which occupy rented premises, are institutions here, the Bank ot British North America, the first bank to open a branch .here, and the Royal Bank of Canada. The Bank of Vancouver, located on the Nechaco, at one time received a stipend of $200 a month, and may yet, "to protect them against loss" as the promoter on whose site they were located once said on the witness stand. Pat Campbell, who has been buying cattle for the B. C. Market, arrived here yesterday with eighteen fat, lowing kine. Arrangements were immediately made to assassinate the animals to appease tbe beet hunger of the populace. Beef has been a rare commodity here for some little time, and the sight ot the kind-faced cows, driven from silver brooks and leafy glades in thc sunny south to lay down their lives to fill short orders, gladdens the heart. When the chief arrived Dodds lm- > two flmly e8taMi8hed flnancial mediately began to talk and started1 . it. „._,. „, „,,,*._ by saying tbat he believed he was responsible lor at least 200 fires In Winnipeg and St. Boniface during the past two years. The biggest of these which he claims to have been responsible for was the conflagration in the Radford-Wright building on March Ilth, 1912, which caused the death of seven persons, five ot them firemen. He said that he stood and watched the bodies brought out and helped to keep the crowd back. This fire resulted in $250,000 damage to property. Dodds also claims that he started the fire in the Rat Portage Lumber Company on May 14 of last year, which did damage to the extent oi $40,000 and also the McKittrick block last summer, which was damaged (or a similar amount. On June 22 he set fire to the new convent being built ln St. Boniface and June 26 to the rear of the cathedral. Dodds also says that he started many of the big fires In St. Boniface and also in Winnipeg, and many minor ones which did not get a good start. His favorite scene ot action was vacant buildings or places which were not carefully guarded and Into which he could get without a great deal ol difficulty or danger. It is estimated that he started fires which ln all will total over $1,000,- 000 damages besides the loss ot life in the Radford-Wright catastrophe. 'Nothing could keep me from starting the blazes," Dodds said. It did not hinder his mania to see the bodies taken out in his biggest blaze but since he has been in jail be has, commenced to worry over it, and he gives his troubled conclence as the reason for making the statement. log buildings formed the only oasis in the northern desert where the trapper and the prospector, might find the necessities of esistence. I 't 'I: FORT GEORGE HERALD Published by the Northern Interior Printing Company. Limited J. B. Daniell. President. Devoted to the Interests of the Fort George District and the Northern Interior of British Columbia. m $3.00 i Wu ii .U>u.t Ai.ciaj Rita ■ A-wkitw THE HERALD has had cause to dwell on occasion upon the deplorable manner in whieh the coast newspapers in this province subjugate their policies and pollute the standard of journalistic principle—this by allowing the power and influence of their widely-circulated pages to be turned to account by private individuals whose interests are wholly inimical with those of the reading public they ostensibly serve. No more glaring example of this condition has come to our attention than the campaign now being waged through the fallen newspapers of this province in the matter of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway company's application to register their townsite here under the name of "Prince George." This campaign, which is forced upon the public in the guise of news matter, in editorial comment, and even from the cartoonist's allotted space, represents nothing more genuine than the desire of a gang of real estate operators, headed by the king of them all. to inveigle the railway company into an action nicely calculated to enhance the value and importance of their townsite while depreciating that of the railway company itself. To accomplish this, the calculating real estate broker, who appropriated the name of Fort George by registration a few years ago, realizes that a furore of public indignation must be produced. This is easily attained. Strewn over the countries of the world are the thousands of people who have bought 25-foot lots in the subdivisions which have been advertised for long past as "the real Fort George" or "the legal, registered townsite of Fort George." These people have been led to believe that the subdivisions in which they have invested were, by the fact of the significance of their registered name, vastly important in the •cb-eme of things hereabouts. That the name, Fort George- applied to an old Hudson Bay company post, haled from the frontier oblivion to identify a mass of speculative subdivisions—only gained its notoriety from the fact that it was so widely advertised in this connection, has not been taken into consideration at any time. The railway company, whose intention to make an important point of the place known as Fort George before the days of townsites in these parts, has always b#en fairly plain, finding that the name has been worked to death and that it was the personal property of a corporation with which they had nothing in common, and whose operations on occasions had caused them considerable annoyance, has decided to call their town- •ite Prince George. And they will. Therefore the terrible lamentations, the denunciations, and the newspaper attacks levelled at the G.T. P. and inspired by the townsite promoter whose schemes, like those of other mice and men, have quite often gone kerfluey. We cannot see any law which might be applied to prevent the registration of any name the G. T. P. may care to apply to their townsite here. The Land Registry Act is a terse piece of legislation, likewise is section 69 of the Land Act They cover the . situation. What the promoter hopes to accomplish by the false impression of the situation which is being spread broadcast by the moribund, dependent and abject journals which have so inadvisedly taken up his fight, on his own lines, we fail to see. It is not possible that by such means as these it is hoped that the Minister of Lands may be prevailed upon to withhold his approval of the plans submitted by the railway company. It is time that the government realized exactly what has been transpiring up here for the past three years and called a halt upon the obstructionist tactics aimed to maim real progress and aid speculative propositions which stand at last before the public in their true light. These tactics are created by pettifogging lawyers, crooked politicians and unscrupulous promoters, and they should not be tolerated. MO announcement of recent months indicates more pronouncedly the permanent nature of real estate values, or acknowledges as strongly the assured position of South Fort George as a permanent and important business area, than the announcement that the Royal Bank of Canada will shortly build a permanent branch on their property on Fourth Street. In the interest attaching to the plans of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway's Prince George townsite, a short distance to the north of South Fort George, it is natural that the properties regarded as additions to that area will appear to the general public to be of minor import as business or industrial sections. The Herald has always realized the fact that in the future creation of the Prince George townsite lies the best interests of this city. The area ot the South Fort George townsite is limited to a total of no more than 90 acres. The site is, without a doubt, the most natural point for the commencement of development here, and by the same token, it will continue to grow and develop from the strong position we occupy today as the greater townsite of Prince George, hard by our borders, grows and develops, The Herald has always contended that this town should apply for incorporation as a municipality under the name of South Prince George, and this contention we strongly adhere to without compromise or qualification. Had the interests which opposed the attitude of The Herald in this stand, known then what they do today, we do not believe that the fiasco of harking back to the application for a name which marks us as something we are not- *n addition to an unimportant mass of subdivisions-would have occurred. This matter of a name we commend to the serious consideration of our readers, and we shall be glad to receive their views. Green Bros., Burden & Co. W EijiKii . Dtnai-n i 6 C. The location of the Pacific Great Eastern line between Lillooet and the vicinity of Fort George, a distance of 290 miles, is now in progress. There are two engineering parties in the field and additional parties are to follow. It is hoped to finish the permanent location before next fall. The work now being undertaken is on the lower section of the route north of Lillooet, actual construction on which is to be undertaken this summer. Eleven hundred men are now employed in the various camps along the route from Lillooet south along Seaton and Anderson Lakes and beyond to Pemberton Portage. Hon. W. J. Bowser has issued orders that no licenses should be granted for the selling of liquor in Newport. The government is following the policy of preventing the sale of liquor in railway construction camps, and although Newport is not yet connected with the Pacific Great Eastern Railway, Mr. Bowser considered it wise to prevent the aale of liquor there at the start. Several licenses were asked for. The same policy is ordered for Lillooe} and other places along the line of the railway. The "blind pigs" are being hunted down and eradicated as rapidly as possible. C: Sir: In yojur issue of April 1st. last was published an article entitled) "Fort George or Prince George." Having been a resident oi South Fort George for nearly a year and, I think, knowing what I am talking about, I wish to join issue with several statements made in the above article the correctness ot which I dispute. The article referred to states that "when tbe townsite (meaning the Fort George townsite) was fairly established, having, as it has today, a population ot about 1000 etc." Now I unhesitatingly say that this is a serious misstatement of fact. The townsite of Fort George contains today at the very outside figure, 400 people, excluding railroad employees that may be established in camps on the townsite. Not that there is no room for more. Half a million could easily be accommodated without jostling each other. Excluding railroad employees I don't suppose that there are more than 2000 people within a radius of 25 miles ot Fort George. This includes the bustling but little known town of South Fort George. More than one hundred years ago the Hudson Bay Company established a trading post on the Fraser river and called it Fort George. This name, I understand, was never registered. This'trading post adjoins the townsite ot South Fort George, and lies about 2 iniles trom the present townsite o! Fort George. The G. T. P. property lies between the Hudson Bay property and Fort George itself. It is well known that in the past the Hudson Bay Company have picked the best sites for its Forts ln the localities where they have been established. It did not choose any part ot the present townsite of Fort George for the simple reason that lt was not the best site. Fort George is not situate on the Fraser river but on the Nechaco river, far inferior (rom the point of view of navigation. Again, in nearly all cases, and very properly so, the Indians have been granted the best land in British Columbia. The G. T. P. have purchased the Indian reserve No 1, and intend to make it, I hope, tbe town ot Prince George. If the writer of the article referred to will ever condescend to let me show him a bird's eye view of the G. T. P.property from a certain point I know of, I think that he will admit that it is ideally fitted by nature tor the laying out of a beautiful city. Really the following lines in the above article would, to put it vulgarly, make a cat laugh. They read as follows: "No one who has ever visited the scene would argue that the site which the G. T. P. was forced to take as a last resort is to be compared with that of earlier and more enterprising promoters." Let us examine this. If the early bird is to catch the worm of location, surely the Hudson's Bay Company ls entitled to breakfast first, to be followed by the original owners of the South Fort George townsite? But why was the Indian reserve not chosen before the other town- sites adjoining? Well, go to the proper authorities and tell them you wish to buy land held as an Indian reserve and just see what kind of an answer you will get. The G. T. P. are performing a very great public service by building a transcontinental railway and I presume that tht powers that be realised that it could tread where ordinary mortals would be told to keep oft ths grass. The people ot South Fort George are seeking incorporation as a city What We Have we Horn FORT FRASER, Central British Columbia, has the ideal townsite location on the entire line of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in.British Columbia. : : : : It has also many natural resources and advantages not possessed by other townsites. These Are Advantages Which Cannot be Taken Away Again, it is a natural distributing centre for a vast territory, and with the incoming of the Grand Trunk Pacific, Pacific & Hudson Bay Railway and other contemplated lines, its future as one of the coming cities of Western Canada is assured. FORT FRASER is already a good lively town with Government oflice, telegraph office, postoffice and various lines of trade already established there. Lots can be obtained at from $200.00 upwards with cash deposit of 10 per cent, cash, and 5 per cent, monthly without interest or taxes. P. call their town Prince George, or any other name it pleases. As the article states tbe G. T. P. may be shortsighted but it seems to have a pretty good pair of glasses to work with. Expressing merely my own opinion, I would rather possess an inch of land in the G. T. P. property than an ell in the town of Fort George. WILLOW RIVER BRITISH COLUMBIA At the confluence of the Fraser, Salmon and Willow Rivers. The first town of importance to be established in Central British Columbia on the Main line of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. By those who are in close touch with the true conditions, Willow River is regarded as being a town of future great importance in the heart of "Canada's Inland Empire." This fact, plus the fact that Willow River will be an important lumbering, mining and agricultural centre, makes property in this new town desirable from either a business or investment standpoint. Willow River property has been purchased by merchants and investors throughout Canada and United States. Although the town was only established October 16th, 1912, a number of lots have been resold at decided profits, while other purchasers refuse to sell at even twice the prices paid. The business portion only of Willow River is now on the market—the survey of the residence portion has recently been completed and this portion of the town will be placed on the market in the near future. There are a limited number of lots available in the business portion at the original prices. Easy Terms. No Interest. Cleai and perfect title direct from the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. The Original and Official TownBite of Willow River is located on Lot 785; Station Site approved by the Board of Railway Commissioners March 26th, 1912, Order No. 16179. REMEMBER THAT. Canoes have again taken to the water, and although in places portages must be made over ice Jams, supplies are being moved in tbe water even now It looks as though the steamboats will be running very early in May,~in spite of the late break up. The party leaves immediately for the Willow river town- site, to lay out the north half of Lot 782. He urges that all property holders will see that their premises are properly cleared of the accumulated debris of winter. This Bhould be done by raking together all the accumulated rubbish and litter which should be burned. Russell Walker, of the North Coast Land company, arrived here on last Saturday's stage. William Blair is at present at the eastern end of steel superintending the construction of scows to bring down the first of his stock. The old, old story of the small boy, tbe 22-rifle, and the accidental shot cropped up here again this week. In this instance the shriek of the victim went forth from the peaceful home of Jimmy Bind, the well known and respected half breed who lives west of the Hudson Bay property. Prank Bird, age 14, was sitting at his father's table, when his little brother seized upon tho loaded 22 rifle which he discharged and landed a bullet in his brother's head. From all appearances the boy will recover. He is doing well, and is not in any danger unless complications set in. Tbe bullet entered his temple and followed tbe edge of the skull.
