NUMBER 11 HAD SUICIDE! <.+*^(*^*<^<^"K'<^MK«M''M-*:* Widespread regret will be felt at the unfortunate circumstances which marked the ending ol the earthly career ol Guy Beau- pre Nowers, who, lor several vears, has been well known locally as "Bob Ritchie," particulars of which were brought out at the inquest, held bv Coroner Diplock Thursday morning For some lime past the deceased had been in the cmplov ol the B. C. El. Ry. Co., in Uncapacity of motorman on the local system. According to the testimony of Manager Albert G. Perry, about three weeks aj*o, Nowers consulted him, stating that he was not feeling well and explaining in particular that lie lound himself the victim of certain hallucinations, chief a- mongst which was the delusion that certain persons were constantly pursuing him by maligning his character. In pursuance ol this conversation, Mr. Perry granted him a few weeks' vacation, in order that he might take a rest. At Mr. Perry's suggestion, Nowers consulted a pltvsician, who .subsequently In- lurtm-d Mr. Perry that the deceased was suffering Irom a nervous disorder, which demanded a rest. During the lollowing two weeks, Nowers several times returned to Mr. Perry's oflice, the last time being Mon- dav last, when he wished to return In work. Mr. Pi-rrv, however, slronglv recommended him to take a longer vacation and to take a trip somewhere, under conditions that would give him lots of fresh air and enercise, which Nowers finallv consented lo do. Mr. Perrv then submitted .1 letter, which had been lell bv the deceased, addressed to htm The coroner likewise read a similar letter, addressed respectively lo the parents of the deal.iscd alld In Chiel of Police Davies. In these letters his intention lo take his own life wa.s clearly stated, the chief reason ascribed being tlu- slanders which had been circulated about him. After reading the letters, Coroner Diplock stated lhat the only further testimony that would be required would tie that ol a witness, who had sonic knowledge ol the manner ol death. These facts were elicited Irom the testimony of Mr. Trundle, who resides al Sunshine creek, Nortli Arm. On Tuesday morning, Mr. Trundle's attention was attracted to a skid with nu unusually large sail, coming tip North Arm, with a very heavy wind blowing. His attention was taken away Ior a lew moments and when he looked again the boat had overturned, .nnl lhe occupant was standing on the keel, waving his hat sus- pendi'il on the end of an oar as a signal of distress He hasti ly summoned a neighbor, Mr McCormick, and they rowed lhc two miles to the boat and rescued the man, who subsequentl\ gave his name as Guy Sowers Thc boat was afterwards broughl to land wilh one, ol llir oars. Wednesday morning Nowers took the boat and .he one oar and paddled down toward Deep Cove. Later Mr. Trundle saw him paddling across tin- Arm. About three in the alter noon, he re-crossed the Arm and landed in a little bay, just l-c- yond a blufl Irom Mr. Trundles house. A little later Mr. Trun die's attention was attracted by shouting, and, looking up, he saw Nowers standing on the edge ol the bluff, whiih is about loo leet high. He was shouting and waving his arms, evidently to attract the attention of the occupants ol a small launch which was coming down the Arm. Thc next instant the unlortunate young man swung his arms as il lor a jump and 'M'*M*"X">'M*->,.W>*,>*,H,->*M">-"' 1 leaped over the blull, falling upon thc ground below. Mr.Trundle and the occupants of the launch hastily- made their way I to the spot, arriving in alboul two minutes after the leap, Mt jlife was extinct when tliey ar- 1 rived. The jury comprised C.E.Law- 'son, foreman, It, IV Martinson, sr., A. J. C. Robertson, .lack Loutet, .lohn Bailey and W. C. SUNDAY BASEBAU ANI) OVERCROWDING Bditor Kxpress: Sir,—About six weeks ago, (belore I had heard a whisper of Sunday baseball) I spoke to Ms worship the mayor about ths danger ol carrying passengers la excess ol the legal limit. A transportation company is bound to provide lor the convenience and safety of thc travelling public, and while the lirsl point may, to some extent, In- a matter of opinion, thc second is fixed by law. It would, in any case be the duty of thc city, now that the purchase bylaws have been passed, to exercise all reasonable precaution in regard to the safety of the public; bui such precaution is doubly desirable, seeing tliat at thc present time our liability is absolutely unlimited. I-'or this reason a- lone, I submit that Sunday baseball in North Vancouver, should not and cannot be permitted. Even without baseball it will be difficult enough to provide sufficient transportation lacilities to keep within the requirements of the law. With baseball added, it is clearly quite impossible. The mayor is, I understand, at present sole manager, and a grave responsibility will rest on him il he allows the numerical limitations imposed by lave to bc recklissh violated. Exactly the MM responsibility will attach to thc provisional directors, wheu ihi-y assume control. Speakinj* lor myself, I wish lo make u entirely clear, that 1 shall absolutely n-luse to remain on lhe board, unless 1 find that my fellow directors agree with tne in holding that the saletv ol the travelling public must be, anu is, the paramount consideration Vours, etc., K- E. MACNAGHTEN THE TRIE Sl'OK'lSMAN Editor Express: Sir,—Will you kindly publish the enclosed excerpt, Irmn the uduinns ol the New York World the writer thereol being C. E. Van Loan. The article is so timely and has so much good common sense about it, that 1 am sure it will tie read with interest. Yours truly, J. T. JONES Vancouver, May 3, 1909. In every city there arc many men who take no interest 111 .inv lorm ol sport. They never get in thc open air and wallop a goll ball over the green lulls They do not care (or Imm-ImII because they do nol understand it. Racing in any lorm does not appeal to them. Football makes them ill. They shudder at the idea ol two muscular fellows with gloves on their hands. These people arc ill the minority everywhere. They are never molested by red blooded people, who, having no appeliu- lor pink tea, do not count it a crime in the sedentary few. The spnitMti.in is willing to allow his neighbor to lead his own life in his own way and drink pink tea until he chokes. All he asks in return is that his nrighl-or shall keep his pale nose out ol another man's business or pleasure, as the case may be. The quiet brother is seldom as tolerant. His idea ol a ripping line evening's entertainment being a battle over a whist table or a chess board with a lettuce sandwich on thc side, he is unable to understand that another sort ol a man might go a different route to Iind his pleasure Then, as,a usual thing, he tries to put the ball and chain on lus lively neighbor. His motto is "1 don't like these things niv- sell, consequently you slun't have thelll!" The pale, intellectual giant with the bulging forehead does not like lo see his fellows enjm ing, themselves He would like to model his town on his own narrow lines, and if permitted to have his way in New York City, would not stop until the green grass grew a foot high in the Broadway. Do not worry about it. The spirit of clean sport will live in spite of all the Morris chair athletes. There is a nation which has never produced an athlete, i is an old nation, but it has not made any world history in a thousand years. It will nut make any in the thousand years to come. SUNDAY BASEBALL Editor Express: Sir,—It is hard to refer to the proceedings of last Sabballi afternoon in our city and US teniperale language. This is necessary, however, as our mayor has intimated that criminal action is to be taken. Bul there are certain aspects ol them that call for discussion. 1. If it were nol so serious for ourselves, we could have smiled at thc "Bully" aspect ol the business. Four thousand men wanted to see, or lake part in, a baseball game last bunday They knew they dared not have it in their own town. 'Ihey lound a man over here—a Cambridge blue lorsooth—wlio was eager to make >:oo lor hiiusell, and ;'jn to be divided among a few of the local youths, and they saw their chance. Wh.it had they to do with our civic authorities, or our feelings, or wishes? They were 4000 strong and could carry all before them: Yea they could—and about 200 ol them did—even force their way on to the civic ferry boat and travel over at the civic expense. All that was possible tor them, and the Bully spirit prevailed. Whal a splendid exhibition it made! Vancouver must lie proud ol Ihem! 2. We are told it is lo occur again. Are we to have the same noble Bully band, or has Vancouver an unlimited supply of this genus Bully 10 send hut by relays? North Vancouver la small compared lo Vancouver lor the present, bul she has noi a few men among her citi/eiis, and although some of tiiem are getting old, and all are giiled with a limited amount ol patience, trouble may arise even in this humble place, if lhe sanctity of our homes and the control oi our city is to lie a- gam seriously menaced. Fortunately, even Mr. Bully ian lie brought lace to face with ,111 injunction, in order to presi in the peace, and tliat is something more serious Ior him than a mere civic police warning. 3. The suggestion has been made that the matter ol allowing sports here on the Sabbath day should be referred to the citizens. What better course can be adopted to do litis than lor the sports champion and counsel to resign his seal as alderman and seek re-election. One election has to take place at any rate, to fill the seal vacated by Mr. Braim. II Aid. SchulU will take this step, which I hereby challenge hun tn do, I promise him to meet him as a candidate, fairly and squarely on thc issue. In meeting him, I do so, handicapped I know as I am, sen ing no purelv |>crsonal purpose. I ,1111 a busv man otherwise, and I am nm strong physically lo fan- tin work involved il I am NMCSSB- lul, hut the issue Is to me, and to many others here, one of enormous importance. As you are aware, sir, sunn ol us have been giving inanv nf mir spare hours to the work nl advertising this voung cilv, which is our home, and which wt- desire to make a cilv nl many homes. Wu are about tn issue JOajBOO copies ol a suitable folder for distribution all QVM the world. Do our spotting Iriends wish us to print in largi letters on that Inldet, "Ball games and other sports here every Sabbath?" There is no man living more anxious than I am to assist to arrange Ior suitable athletic ex- itiises and sports fnr out voting men.
