Hot and Cold Bathi, The Kootenay dining room was a blaze of color and light last evening when a large number of Manager H. P. Mytton's friends gathered together to tender the gentleman a farewell banquet on the occasion of his leaving the camp. Hon. T. Mayne Daly occupied the chair, and the banquet was served up in the Kootenay's well known style. A lengthy toast list was presented and the toast of "our guest" brought a very happily worded response from Mr. Mytton, who expressed his regret at leaving Bossland and his appreciation . of the honor paid him by the large assemblage present. A pleasing incident was the presentation to the guest of the evening of a very handsome gold watch suitably engraved. FROZEN TO DEATH Sad Fate of a Salvation Army Miner Near Slocan City. D. G. MONROE, NEWS DEPOT, Stationery, Confectionery, Tobaccos and Cigars; Phoenix, British Columbia S. Hockaday, a miner from Nelson, and a Salvation Army man, lost his life in a blizzard on Bondholder hill near Slocan City last week. He and three companions from Nelson had taken a lease on Bondholder and went up to the property on Monday to commence work. They had to break a trail all the way in and failing to reach camp before night had to Btay in the open. Next day one of the men came back to town while the others pushed on to camp. Later on they came down to the road to get supplies and going back got caught in a blizzard and lost their way, being forced to camp in a snow bank over night. Hockaday became delirious but the other two left him supposedly safe and got to the mine. Early on Thurday morning after partaking of food they went for Hockaday but missed him and did not find him till Friday night. He was dead, having died from exposure. The body was brought to Slocan City Monday morning, frozen stiff. It waB sent to Nelson for burial. Sloven Ore Shipment!* The total amount of ore shipped from the Slocan and Slocan city mining divisions for the year 1901 was, approximately 30,000 tons. "THE PUSH" WERE FRIGHTENED Wh?_ the Figures Were in the Different Wards—Labor is Much Stronger than Anticipated. Against overwhelming odds, and, with a candidate unknown in municipal affairs, the labor party made a gallant fight yesterday for the mayoralty. They were beaten, of course, and it would be affectation to Bay that they are not disappointed over the result. This so called citizens ticket was headed by Mr. Clute, a man with four years' experience of what was required to make an election as nearly secure as possible. And to give the gentlemen who fixed up the voting list due credit, they did this part of their work very well. Money and a good organization of men who thoroughly understood the fine art of electioneering, worked for Mr. Clute yesterday and helped to add to the 62 majority Mr. Clute and his friends can legitimately boast of today. The ladies played an important part in yesterday's contest. The labor party were fairly, or rather unfairly, caught by not having the married women of their party registered as "householders." They will be wiser next year. The Clute party were the party in power and they used their advantage the fullest extent. .In a fair field with no favors they would have been as much behind as tin y were ahead. With an unknown candidate named at the last moment, with a six months' labor strike over them, anil handicapped in other ways, tlie labor parly made a showing yesterday that has fairly Burpri.t.4 their opponents. The Aldermanic figures demonstrate how close a fight can be made in two out of the three city wards. Ward one is admittedly labor, and Duulou's election is merely an accident. In ward two the vote split so evealy that Mr. Hamilton, who headed the poll after two year's exceptionally good service in the council, only defeated E. King, a first-time candidate, by three votes in theclosest kind of a fight. Ward two is against the labor party apparently, by about aB great a majority as ward three is in its favor. Every effort was made, and successfully made, to combine both political parties against labor, and the result can hardly be a matter of much congratulation to those who have openly and seoretly done their best to down all organized labor in Bossland for the past year. Of course the pleasing fight will go on. The party which made such a fight, single-handed, as the labor party concluded yesterday, in place of being discouraged by the result, will simply work all the harder for the future. We might have looked for less bitterness it iB true, but the Miner, now Mr.Clute's official organ, declared a continuance of the struggle upon the old lineB by its headlines last night, and its comment on ths result and the Miner will be accommodated in the future, as it has been in the past. The Would promises Mr. Clute to devote a very fair share of its columns to municipal matters during the next twelve months. If the mayor can straighten out the muddle at the city hall and reduce civic expenditure along the lines that the taxpayers should insist on, he wiil receive due credit, but the threat to give all the city advertising to the morning paper will not prevent the World from speaking very plainly concerning the actions of the mayor and his council for 1902. When ever a paper attempts to point out civic blunders or to fairly report and comment on civic mismanagement it is always retorted that want of patronage has soured the would be critic and some people are simple enough to accept the statement without inquiring into the real facts of the mismanagement charged. The World's policy is declared in advance and we ask the co-operation of every rate-payer who desires to see honest and economical administration oJ civic affairs. Mr. Clute is very much mistaken if for a moment he fancies that the vote yesterday wu an approval of past management and an encouragement to go ahead and do likewise this year. All kinds of game in the season at the Kootenay. tf. A LIVELY CONTEST Dick Jones and Walter Sullivan Spar at the International. OTHER JONESTS Returns from Surrounding Towns. BRADSHAW TICKET IN SLOCAN The Results of Voting in Neigbor- ing Camps—Victories and Defeats are Recorded. There was a very crowded house at the International Music hall last night to witness the twenty round contest between Dick Jones and Walter Sullivan. Both men were in good condition and made an interesting fight fer the full twenty rounds, at the conclusion of which tha referee announced a draw. The preliminary bout between ''Klondyke" Edwards and Foley was a spirited exhibition and the referee declared the fight in favor of "Klondike" Edwards on points. The vaudeville program which was unusually good will be produced at the opera house this ev ening. SCHOOL TRUSTEES. Th* Board Thnt Will Control Our School Ad'ulr, During 1903. Slocan City, Jan. 16,—The elections here today were hotly contested, and passed off with a great deal of enthusiasm and interest on both sides, moral questions being the chief issue, the Bradshaw ticket being [completely elected with the exception of Alderman Barber, who tied Arnot, but the returning officer gave his casting ballot in his favor electing the solid ticket for Mayor Bradibaw, the result being as follows: Mayor—B. A. Bradshaw, 46; A. York, 44. For Aldermen—D. McNichole, 50; J. G. McCallum, 49; D.D. Robertson, 47; A. C. Smith, 46; W. E. Warder, 45; D. Arnot, 41; A. Barber, 44; George Henderson, 42. O. box 90-, Rosaland, B. C THE ELECTION. The Independent Labor party and their mayoralty candidate, Peter John McKichan have good reason to be proud of the plucky fight they put up yesterday against very heavy odds. That Mr. McKichan could poll 400 votes against Mr. Clute's 460 is a wonderful performance under ' the existing circumstances, and the result shows the labor party what they may expect to accomplish with a little more preparation than was possible this year. Municipal contests such as the one which ended last night are won largely by organization and plans carefully laid in advance. Mr. Clute has been in the council for the past four years, while his opponent appeared before the public for the first time, as a candidate in any capacity, and this in itself gave Mr. Clute an advantage that it was impossible to overcome. We fancy that during this year the labor people will follow the actions of the city council far more closely than they have ever done before, and we hope that as at least one result the city finances will be found in a different state to what unfortunately they are at present Mr. Clute, however, is quite unpledged in any way nor are the members of the council under any obligation to the ratepayers, to adopt any particular course. Neither of the mayoralty candi- . dates made any pretense of offer ing a platform to the electors and as a result tbe city council as now elected is quite at liberty so far aB election promises are concerned, to take any course, and adopt any policy they see fit. Now that Mr. Clute is elected and Rossland is really "free from union tyranny" as the Miner declares it is we look for an immediate sale of the city debentures and a good time all around generally. The mayor of Rossland for 1902 we take it, has a difficult task before him and if he is able to successfully over come the difficulties we think we see staring him in the face, in such a way as to redound to the credit of the camp the World will be glad to give his worship all the kudos he deserves. Naturall y the World proposes to give municipal affairs this year rather closer attention than in the pa st and we will watch with a g ood deal of interest Mr. Clute's efforts to straighten matters out. NOTES AND COMMENTS. Tho number of people who voted for Mr.Clute will grow fora week or so. It is always so after an election. We are all human. What a pity Barney was not here to enjoy bis victory yesterday and to assist in freeing the community from "the shackles of, unionism" as the Whiner puts it. It is on record that the Whiner tried to "shackle" John S. Clute three weeks ago, but the lawyer got "behind closed doors" and stayed there until the election was over. Thiey were a frightened lot of "citizens" yesterday until Mr. (.lute's majority was announced, and then they always knew just how it would turn out. A well known broker who was challenged and sworn yesterday is puzzled as to whether he is as well known as he thought he was or whether he is really well known at all—and there are others. Asthma gure Free! How does the regular city revenue compare with the regular city salary output, and will the new council attempt any reforms or make any attempt at economy? They can not tell us any too soon what tlicy propose for 1902. The vote in Ward Three is admittedly labor, and the labor vote in Ward One, which must have come as a surprise topmost people, is just about equal to the combined vote against labor, judging from yesterday's record. Only in Ward Two did the "element" or rather the "sediment of the best element" shine to any advantage yesterday. Now that Mayor-elect Clute is sate in the chair we hope he will have the city accounts and particularly the balance sheet duly audited and published. Le us all know how the city stands. The idea of covering up the true state of affairs in order to sell the debentures is pure nonsense. The purchaser of such securities is always a sharp customer who will certainly insist in askingjawkward questions before buying. Hot Boast Beef served with every glass of beer at the Alhambra. Until the final result of the vote was declared yesterday "the push" made no secret of their anxiety. There was but little money wagered on the contest yesterday. It was no sure thing up to 4:30 p.m. Black Jack, and gambling generally, started at once yesterday as soon as the result of the election was announced. By nine o'clock the streets were almost deserted last night, and the town generally was very quiet for an election night. Some wag tied a piece of crape on Andy's bar door this morning and created a false alarm. Andy is all right. ■ Rankin who is charged with personating Ryan yesterday, will be tried before John Kirkup at the court house tomorrow morning. The Vote in Ward one was unusually close there being only one vote between Armstrong and King and Hamilton only being three votes ahead of King. A. S. Goodeve was the hardest worker for the Clute party yesterday. He drove away down to the Half-way House for a single vote, and brought his man up and voted him. There were seven or eight cases before the police magistrate this morning charged with being drunk and disorderly or wilh fighting but they were all told to go and sin no more. City Clerk McQueen will make an official recount of all the votes cast yesterday for mayor and aldermen, at the city offices tomorrow morning commencing at ten o'clock.
