Prof. Ayrton defines inertia, from the European standpoint, as "resistance to motion," and, from the American standpoint, as "resistance to standing still." The difference is exemplified in the fact that there are hardly 100 electric motors at work in Great Britain, while **in America there are 6,000. The Greatest Light.—Since lust May the most powerful artificial light in existence bat been that of the St. Oatherine's Point lighthouse, in the Isle of Wight It is an electric arc, produced between carbons 2*t inohes in diameter, and it is estimated to be equal in illuminating power to rather more than 7,000,000 candles. It is made to revolve, and every half-minuto a mighty flash of five seconds duration sweeps around the sea, and it is visible at distances that seem in credible. An Antiseptic Faint.—The use of wood-creosote, which is extensively distilled in North Carolina from the wood of Binuspalustris, is recommended by Oapt. W H. Bixby for antiseptic purposes. . It destroys vegetable and animal life, re pels moisture, and coagulates fermentable matter. As a paint for wooden or metallic surfaces, it preserves them from wet and dry rot, rust and the attacks of insects; and when forced by hydraulic pressure into the pores of wood its antiseptic effects are, extended to the very centre of the bloek. A Mechanical Novelty.—The remarkable Mannesmann process of making seamless tubes ii described by Mr. F. Siemens aa consisting in passing the bar of solid metal or glass between revolving conoidal rolls. These rolls are so arranged that the varying velocities of revolution with whioh tbe different parts of the red-hot bar are brought into contact cause the formation of a hollow through the bar's centre. Tubes a foot in diameter, with n shell only a quarter of an inch thiok, may be produced in this way, and great strength i* claimed for them. A bar of metal ho* been introduced between the rolls in luch * manner as to form a tube with sealed ends, the hollow centre being a vacuum, Am Pkopkllebs fob Steamships.—The use of rotating sails, or air propellors, has been considered as a means of driving steamships. According to Mr. H. 0. Vogt, the sails need not be very large, and the external appearance of the apparatus he would propose would be little different from that of the screw propeller, but the wing* would be broadest near the circumference, and be made of sheet steel Rapid rotation creates a rarefaction of the air in front of the wings, causing * thrust to be given quite aa great as that from the screw. The screw propeller loses by friction, by throwing water in the wrong direction, ana by blowij but the air propeller suffers loss only by the first two, while it derives a great gain from 75 per cent of the winds. The crude experiments thui far made have given promising results. A Great Find of Early Paint mas.—Seeking in Lower Egypt, during the present year, for remains of the wonderful Labyrinth of 3,000 chambers described by Herodotus, Mr. Flinders Petrie leemi to have found what he sought, with the pyramidal tomb ot ita builder, and also came upon a great cemetry whoso existence had hitherto been unknown. This cemetry covers about 100 aores, and date* from the Graeoo-Roman period, one or two centuries after Christ. From it Jl r. Petrie has taken hundreds of mummies, with a vast collection of objects buried with tlieui. These artioles include funerary vases, amulets, toys, a tinned copper mirror, a burning lens, a set of leather workers' needles, a flint knife, and —by far the most interesting nnd important of all—a splendid series of portraits, painted upon the cases of elaborately bandaged mummies, and representing the living persons whose remains were placed in these coffins seventeen centuries ago. Theso pictures will add an important chapter to the history of art, Mr. 11. A. Harrison, Chanttt ud Druggist, Uiimiville, Ont., writes: "I can with cimfiiienco recommend Northrop and Lyman's Vegetable Discovery and Dyspeptic Cure for Dyspepsia, Im. fiure Blood, Pimples oa the Face, Bit. oiisness and Constipation — suoh cases having como under my personal observation." The people of that settlement complain that the present steamer service ia not adequate; that, above all things, it is not regu- Hr. What they require is a service thit ihr*l BiiTrrt"" mm! »ti"lr to a certain programme,.nnd onable them —♦inott important point—to. make the trip to this city and return the .tune day. To-the injury und inconvenience, both of this city and the aettleaaient referred to, the mail tubsidy for tarrying the mail between these two places was cancelled a few months ago. We have repeatedly called the attention of the authorities to tho injustice of that action, and the board of trado hu memorialized the Dominion government on the same subject. A reasonable subsidy should be pro- vided for a daily, or, at least a triweekly, mail service, which would insure and compel a steamer to run regularly and thereby meet the necessities of the case. Every effort ihould be made to secure such a tubsidy from the government. In the meantime, the business men of the oity ihould be alive to their own interests to the extent of aiding and patronizing a steamer and making suoh arrangements, as shall insure a regular service of some kind immediately. Any .time lost in this nutter can only result in still further alienating the trade of the important North Arm settlement from this oity. The first week of the famous Parnell commission has been occupied by Attorney-General Webster stating the oase on behalf of the Timet. He concluded his address yeiterday, and the enquiry was adjourned until Tuesday next. The next order will be bringing on the witnesses for tho Timet and against Parnell and his associates. Webster hu promised to call as witnesses persons who had been acting participators in various outrages, and who would tell what moneys had been paid them for their share of the work, and how the crimes were arranged; io that the fun may be said toaetually commence next week. Perhapi the most notable incident of the oommission so far, and one which the Parnellites are naturally elated over, and will turn to good account in the trial, ia the admission by the Timet' solicitors that that journal is in possession of a bundle of letters, admittedly ipurious, whioh were purchased in America. The obvious inference is that, if the letters are not all genuine, the Timet may have been deceived in the matter of the other documents upon whioh its case is baaed. The Parnell commission inquiry promises to engage the attention and interest of the oivilized world, as did the famoua Tiohborne oaae, nearly twenty years ago. By means of the telegraph and tne daily paper, the citizens of New Westminster can watch the daily pro- greu of this interesting trial almost equally aa well a* the inhabitants of Old Westminster, where the commission holds its sittings. We clip the following paragraph from the Vancouver News of Tuesday last, and would recommend .our citizens to make it note of, it, ind to make a practical, application of the gentle hint it is fitted to convey to'the royal city, when they come to select their next board of aldermen, There are many other important suggestions which we shall bring before the people prior to the closing of the present civio year; bnt this will do for a starter: "One by one the various cities on thit coast are seeing that it is desirable in the interests of the community to make some distinction—outwardly at least—between Sunday and the other days of the weok, Although some kinds of sports have recently been largely engaged in on Sunday in some of the largo citiea of the United States, there nre not wanting signs that a reaction against the practice has already set in, Altogether, apart from religious motives, there arc natural causes which make it almost eertain that a people which pursues its labors or ordinary pursuits without intermission from Sunday morning till Saturday night, will deteriorate, and this is coming to be recognized oven by thoso who have hitherto seemed to think that they could steal a march upon their more old-fashioned neighbors by laboring without pause or intermission. The last notable change in this course is that of Tacoma, where on Sunday last the law closing all saloons on that day came into force and was generally observed, the popular feeling evidently being in favor of it. Vancouver has set an example in this respect whioh the other coast oities are rapidly following." As the News says, Ta coma bus recently adopted a Sunday closing by-law, and, to tho honor of tho city be it said, the law was generally observed on coming into force. The Tacoma papers state that there were three violations of the closing ordinance, but the violators were promptly arrested on Monday morning and taught to respect Mm law in future. We can learn a lesson from our enterprising American neighbors in this respect. Tacoma is an enterprising, go-a-head, ambitious city, but recognizes clearly, from a dispassionate business standpoint, that it cannot be regarded as a desirable place for the better classes of peoplo to locate so long as it Haunts such a stigma on its 'scutcheon as on openly desecrated Sabbath, Westminster has taken rather. low ground ou this question, but we hope to see a more civilized and Christian ized spirit prevail in future. We believe that tho majority of those kceping'open house on Sunday now would prefer to close, if the closing were made compulsory and universal. Be that as it may, the fair fame and prosperity of the city, moral and material, demands that the Subbatb be decently observed, outwardly at least. Such is not the case at present, and wo hope to see a decided change made in this re- Bpect, as in some others, by the municipal council of 1889. The explorationi of Oapt 0. D. Grant, of this city, in the schooner Oriel, an account of which was pub. liahed in The Columbian the other day, tie- likely to be fraught with important results to Westminster, if our oitizens take the matter up in the proper spirit and assist to form a oompany for the purpose of fishing in the teeming waten of the coast. Oapt Grant's investigations—and, being a thoroughly practical man, hit verdiotia all the more valuable —have demonstrated that, with proper appliances, a most profitable fishing buiineu can be engaged in from the itart. Silver ulmon were found in abundance, and the reports from th* halibut banks are most gratifying, u will have been seen by our published account of Oapt. Grant's trip. Halibut, weighing from 26 to 90 lbs. each, were caught in large numbers, even with the im- paTfect.ppri.noes at the disposal of aha -exploring ichooner. Steam a*hoon*rt an neceuary, Oapt. In an editorial yeiterday, on the aubject of a redistribution of representation for the firovinoe, we attributed a white popu- ation of 9,000 to Vanoouver. The frisky "9" should have been turned the other way, which would have made the total fie ure read 6,000, which, on good authority, ia a fair estimate for the bono fide white population of the terminal city, Vanoouver has, of coune, a larger floating and hotel population than any other city in the province, but it would be hardly fair to count this for the purpose! of representation. We do not believe in inflated figures, and tho estimate we have made is a betl-rock one for the three citiei referred to—Victoria, 10,000; Vancouver, 11,000; and Weatminater, 5,000. a. «. . Last night our Celestial friend* opened the chicken stealing season by a grand raid on Mr. J. S. Clute'i henhouie. Taking advantage of the wet and atormy night the thievei performed thoir work with a daring and coolneia lomewhat surprising, and their mode of affecting an entrance to the premises givei color to the belief that the several burglariei committed during the paat summer were the work of the ume penons. Mr. Clute'i chicken yard ii surrounded by a high fence, the gato to which b locked every night. Inside Ihe enclosure b the henhouie, alio securely fastened by a itrong spring look. The robben fint of all eut a board acrou with a large auger and then removed the board, giving eaiy entnnoe to the yard. For ventilation purposes one pane of glass had been removed from tho only window in the henhouse, and this aided the celestials in performing the work quietly. A large box lying in the yard wai carried over to the window and one of tho thievei mounting thereon pasted hia hand through the hole and unfastened the tpring inside. It was then an eaiy matter to open the window and bag the game. Fourteen fine birda were taken, tome of them being of considerable value and all superior to the general run of poultry. When the thievei were latiified they took their departure quietly without disturbing anyone. Of course thore ii no clue to the robben, nor ii thore likely to be one found, ai thete gentry have a happy faihion of covering their track* and making detection almoit impoi- lible. However, the icuon having arrived when this nrt of thing becomes epidemic, it would be well for everyone to take extra precaution, and keep a double barreled ihot .gun conveniently at hand to give th. intruder! a firework! reception ihould the kind falei permit, '—♦ -«*-.
