Hon ABB .Davio Daily British Columbian. VOLUME 2 NEW WESTMINSTER, B. 0., THURSDAY EVENING, JANUARY 27, 1887 Jpailj) jlritislt Columbian Thnnday Evealag, Jaaaary ST, IW. Even foole will learn after a while that "a boyoott" is not an American method and ■ will not accomplish what ia deairecl by its projectors. In niae oases out of ten it helps the party against which it u directed.— Chicago Inler-Ocean. Estimates of the gold and silver production for the coast gives California 919,000,000, Nevada $10,- 000,000, Oregon $700,000, Washington Territory $100,000, Alaska $400,000, Idaho $5,000,000, Montana $15,000,000, Utah $9,000,000, Colorado $21,000,000, New Mexico $4,000,000, Arizona $4,500,000, Dakota $2,700,000, Northwestern Mexico $2,000,000, and British Columbia $600,000, making a total for tho year of $94,000,000, against $90,000,000 for 1885. Oregon, Washington Territory, British Columbia, Dakota and Alaska yielded gold alone. The product of California was 80 per cent; gold and 20 per oent. silver.—Ex. Reports from the Atlantic coast coast represent the outlook for American fishermen anything but hopeful in consequence of the scarcity of bait and cod. Tho Canadian cruiser prevents the Americans from getting bait in Canadian waters, and the herrings in American waters nre extremely scarce. An American fisherman lately arrived from the Georges cod banks says he was ten days on the banks without seeing a fish. lt will be remembered that last summer the mackerel kept very close to the Canadian shores, and it looks as if the cod would adopt the same tactics. There is much anxiety among American fishermen. The Dominion alliance has passed the following resolution: "That we regret that neither the recent utterances of Hon. Mr. Blake nor that of Hon. Mr. Foster on the question of prohibition is in harmony with the position of the-Dominion Alliance, and we strongly urge upon our friends the desirability of carrying out the programme laid down by the convention of September, 1885, and September, 1886, by supporting for parliamentary positions only suoh candidates as are known and avowed prohibitionists, and who will do all in their power to attain the declared objects of the Alliance, namely: (1) The immediate enactment and thorough enforce ment of total prohibition; (2) the perfecting and enforcement of the Scott Act; (3) the abolition of the Dominion senate, or its reform in such a way as to bring it into harmony with the moral sentiment of the community," A few years ago the New York assembly considered the question of the taxation of corporations. It was shown Wat the life insurance companies, with capital and assets of $200,000,000, paid no personal tax whatever, the money being invested in United States bonds. These companies were taxed on real estate, however, at a valuation of over $20,000,000. The fire and marine insurance companies, with ovor $70,000,000 of capital and assets, paid personal taxes to the amount of $250,000, nnd on a real estate valuation of about $1,550.- 000 paid a little ovei $40,000 in taxes. Railroad companies having about $140,000,000 capital paid about $100,000 on personal property valued at nearly $4,000,000 and about $140,000 on real estate valued at ulinut $5,450,000. Trust companies having nbout $11,000,- 000 capital paid it little moro than $25,000 personal taxes, but nothing on real estate. Other corporations aggregating a capital over $212, 000,000 paid n personal tax of $360,000 ou a valuation of some $14,000,000. Non-resident corporations having over $10,000,000 aggregate capital paid $20,000 personal taxes on n valuation of $785,- 000. Seven hundred miscellaneous corporations, with an aggregate capital of $170,000,000, pnid no taxes, although property liable to be taxed $4,000,000. The local taxes on real and i personal property in Now York oity at this time was about $30,000,000 on about $1,100,000,- 000 of assessed valuation. Corporations owning;nearly $800,000,000 capital und personal property paid as taxes only about $904,000, wheu they really should pay about $15,- 000,000.—Oregonian.
