Halifax, Jan. 9.—From tliis city, within the sound of the billows of tho "deep-voiced neighboring ocean," of "Longfellow, I send, at this late date, tho greetings' of the Atlantic to the Puuilic and wishes for a prosperous and bright n^w year to tbe Columbian und its subscribers; Dalhousie College dosed for vacation on the 22th of last month. During tho "evening the students attended a musical and literary entertainment in the college, after which they paraded the streets with horns, whistles, and ull kind of queer musical instruments from which they drew such soul- stirring strains as only students can. They saluted a great mnny of tho professors, somo of tho newspaper offices, and the polico station.— Well, the Shelburne election is over ana the victory lieswiththe tory candidate, Major General Laurie. His majority was seven, but on a recount it was raised to eight; so the greatly boasted strength of the tory party in Shelburne, of which we heard so much, has dwindled to a small majority. The grits account for the result by saying that a number of their voters, about 13, were away tishing und that the whole strength of the conservatives was present at the polls through the help of the government.—There is an old saying that thero is nothing like going away from a place to find its news. Wo havo had a practical illustration of this adage. Some of the Halifax correspondents of the American papers seem to have a strong-imaginution and great aptitude for the invention of "canards." Not long ago, two or three drunken men landed on "St. George's Island in the horbor, and tho American papers immediately had it that an attempt was made by the Fenians to blow up the forts at Halifax. But the latest one is a graphic account of an embreyo meeting among the soldiers of the York and Inn- coster regiment, during which thoy attempted to set fire to their barracks. The report goes on to say that three of them were sent to the guard house, on suspscion, and the sentries doubled. Tho writer of these stories ought to drop news-gathering and take up novel writing a la Haggard for which his genius seems moro fitted than for truthful newspaper correspondence. It is needless to say that tho second story has if possible less foundation than the first.—J. W. Longley, the Attorney-General of Nova Scotia, and chief champion of commercial union, is, at present, in Boston attending a meeting of those interested in the subject.—About two weeks ago, McNeally, tho Saco bank robber, was caught hereby Detective Power. Since the arrest the detective has been detailing some of his shadowing movements. Amongst the number who fell under his surveillance were two young men from British Columbia who registered ono ovening this summer at tho Severe Houso on North street. Power had beeninformedthatMcNeclly.whohad a companion, with him, wore glasses and was a youug man about twenty years of age. Ho"shadowed"tho pair to a town on the Windsor and Annapolis Railroad, but just when ho thought he had his game bagged he found that he was mistaken and that they instead of being JIcNrally and his chum were, as ho says, "two young professors from New Westminster, British Columbia." Thoy, however, were quito ignorant evon of the existence of McNeally and knew nothingof the afl'air until itcarne out in the Halifax Chronicle,—TheTom- perauce League havepreforredcharges against Mr. MaoKasey, the inspector of licenses for laxity in the discharge of his duties. So fnr the commission hnve given no judgment in the matter. Tho charges aro very general and will, in all probability, fall to the ground, but Mr. J. T. Buhner, tho prohibition ohani- pion, is urging them for nil they are worth. Tho Halifax License Law does uot allow tho selling of less than a pint of liquor, nor tho drink- ,ing of it in tbe shops; yet one man gave evidenceof beingin nearly twenty liquor shops whero ho bought less tlmu a pint which ho also drank on the "premises.—Lieutenant Colonel Milsom, formerly of tho 02nd regiment, died on tho 3rd inst., and was buried last Friday, in tho soldiers burying ground at Fort Massey. Tho plumed hearse, tho dirge- beathing bunds, the reversed rillirs, tho regular step of tho long Hues of red-coats, and the solemn burial service all combined to increase tiro solemnity of the occasion, and to make ono reflect seriously on the words of Addison, "surely, 1 said to myself, man is a shadow nnd life a dream." Alfonso XIII. Queen Christina, the present regent nud mother of the King, upon the discovery of the in tl'igue, insisted that there was not enough room in Spain for both Isabella and herself, and being very comfortably situated in her official .rind domestic "establishment, she would prefer that the ex-Queen should do the travelling necessary to place the. boundary lino of Sp.-iiiir.between them. BBRESFOItD's RESIGNATION CAUSES A CLAMOR. London, Jan. 20.—The rosignatifm of Lord Charles Bores-ford has nosed quite a breeze both in political and club circles and in the columns of the press. A portion of the tory press condemn tho action of the intrepid sailer aa reflecting upon the naval administration. But othor conservative newspapers are Bitfiiciently outspoken as to declare their bolief that the present system of currying oil the naval department of tho government forced him to resign ns tin** means of disclaiming any responsibility for tho bungling methods and tlie short-sightoti economy just now prevailing in the'admiralty office. Foremost among tlio news-papers supporting Lord Bercsford'a action is the St, James' Gazette, which assorts that the reasons given hy the admiralty for Lord Bereaford's withdrawal arc insufficient, adding that the country must know more of the truth of the reason impelling his notion, and the sooner the butter, both for the country ami for those responsible for the country's loss of Lord Chin lea' services iu tho naval department. Lord Bereaford's popularity with tho masses*, by reason of his conspicuous gallantry during the bombardment of Alexandria, his disregard of tradition on the occasion of the last naval review nt Spithead, that a man may nut he a man in the presence of the queon, and Iih independent criticism of the naval ad- rainistration during the lust few years, is enormous, and public opinion is largely in his favor. Even in the ab- sciico of anything like an explanation of his course in the present instance, tho people generally condemn Mr, Gosohens opposition to Lord Bores- ford's schomos for increasing tho efficiency of the navy and strong'honing of England's defences ostensibly on tho Bcova of economy,' and it is likely thnt tlie ohancellor of tho exohequer will find himself confronted with tho necessity for a more lucid explanation of his promises than ho has hither- to ovinotd a disposition to vouolu&fo, THIS MORNING'S DESPATCHES. How doctors do sometimes differ may be seen hy perusing the report of the political meeting hold in Victoria last Wednesday night as reported by the two leading newspapers. The meeting was held in the interest of Mr. Williams, the opposition cundadute. The Colonist says:.^ "ilr. Williams made a miserable effort last night. Thero was no enthusiasm, and the audience seemed to be about three-fourths supporters of the government." The Times says: "The old walls of Philharmonic Hall havo seldom resounded to more rousing and convincing speeches, or contained a more enthusiastic assemblage than on the occasion of tho opposition rally last night." Of course one of these organs must be lying (under a misapprehension), but we have no means of knowing which of them it is—indeed it is quite possible both of them have gone beyond the actual truth. This is one of the beauties of tho party system. Persons at a distance who peruse these two reports will be greatly puzzled to know what sort of a meeting it was. If there was a really independent, reliable newspaper in Victoria, more concerned about its reputation as a newspaper than its allegiance to a political party, we might havo received a report of what actually took place, without varnish or disfigurement. The contest in Viotoria for the seat made vacant by the resignation of Mr. Prior promises to be conducted with a good deal of vigor and with quite a few heavy weights in the foreground. At the meeting held in the interest of Mr. Williams on Wednesday night addresses were delivered by Mr. Beaven, leader of the opposition, Mr, Humphreys. ex-Mayor Fell, and Mayor Grant. Among tho audience were Hon. Robt. Dunsmuir, Hon. Theo. Davie, and other prominent government supporters, lt is announced that a meeting in the interest of Mr. Duck will be held to-night, and Hon. Theo. Davie, among others, will deliver an address. Mr. Davie will doubtless be backed up by other leading government supporters. He is a pretty hard hitter himself and will hold his own against either Mr. Humphreys or Mr. Beaven. One of the chief accusations brought ngainst the government at the Wednesday night meeting was its squandering of the public funds and the public lands. One of tho speakers intimated tbat the province would bo bankrupt in two years, and another declared that the present government was the most corrupt that ever existed on the faco of theeartb! Tonight it is probable some light will be thrown on the financial situation, and it needs no prophetic vision to assure us that when all tho facts come out the showing will be very much changed from that which was presented at the opposition meeting. A writer iu the Victoria limes of Wednesday, speaking of the mail service between Victoria and San. Francisco, points out that the stipulation originally mado by the Dominion government had already been broken, and that the chango had been in the interest of a better service. The clause in the agreement is quoted as follows: "The Dominion will provide an efficient mail service fortnightly by steam communication between Victoria and San Francisco, and twice a week between Victoria and Olympin; tho vessels to be adapted to the conveyance of freight and passengers." Every person knows that tho service between Olympin and Victoria was long since abandoned, and u service from Seattle substituted. Moreover, instead of this service boing twice a week, it is daily. If the federal government, therefore, holds the province to the letter of the agreement, it may withdraw the Seattle subsidy nnd substitute for it a by-weekly scrvioo from Olympia, which would be a great misfortune to the province. It is to be hoped the whole matter may be amicably arranged, and that in any modifier! tion of the original terms agreed upon the interests of British Columbia may be secured. This province has suffered a great deal because of its isolation from the other provinces of the Dominion. While its natural market lay beyond the na • tional boundary, the Canadian tariff has forced us to do a great doal of our trading with eastern Canada at a very heavy cost in freight charges. In proportion to our population we have contributed a great deal moro than any other provinco to the federal revenue, and are entitled now to special consideration. Our mail Borvice is undoubtedly expensive to the federal government, but our connection with the confederacy has been very expensive to us. If the San Francisco mail subsidy is withdrawn (and, perhaps, it could be withdrawn without any injury to the commercial service which, after all, i» the.only one of any importance now), this provinoe ought to be compensated in some other way, either by receiving a lump sum from the federal government or an annual grent to the provincial treasury for •11 time to com* IDffEUICB UD flRBffE&UIGE. "I'll take juat one glass, only one;" the youth said; "Forearely one glass I liavu no need to dread." Oh you foolish young man; how I wish you could hear All the devils in hell, how they laugh and they cheer; For they know very well if with one you begin Vou may yet bo a slave to their aide-do- camp, "Gin." That glass welds a links in Ids terrible chain To break which all your struggles perchance will be vain. They know the beginnings are all with "just one;" But 'tis with the first-glass that the thraldom's begun. So shun that first-glass if you wish to be free, 'Tis baleful and deadly, like the dread upas tree. Oh be wise, put it down; don't taste e'en a drop. If you never begin you will never need stop. You think you are strong and could Htop you are Bure, But prevention, dear friend, is far better than cure. 1>. For What Aru They Fighting;, They aro fighting for the personal liberty to make the liquor dagger drink the precious blood of our noble motherhood. They nro fighting for liberty to Bend your son, or brother, or kinsman to a felon's cell. They are lighting for a traffio that thrives best when most human hearts are crushed. They are fighting to dynamite Christian civilization. Thoy are lighting to depopulate happy homes and people the abodes of despair. They aro lighting for tho privilege of crowding asylums and prisons with wrecked spirits. They are lighting to tux public wealth to harbor and support thoir debased and improverished product. And shall they light for victory? Uo up and astir, my countrymen. No holier wnr ever nerved a human aim, or stirred a human soul. Mako this year register an advance movement for private and public righteousness. The uge is on tip-too, anxious to place humanity upon higher ground in life work. Will you not be a co-worker? —Issue. The Liquor Trade Is Doomed. Tho liquor interest has made its own bed and determined its future. A sober second thought may reveal tho light it has long needed. That interest needs to comprehend that there is silently maturing in the land a conv c- tion that excessive liquor drinking ts the greatest of all evils tlmt afflict the country, and tlmt it has becomo necessary to deal wilh the question accord ingly. Tho process by which this conviction is ro ichod is silent, but anru It is operation iu thdu-iands of families, where nre closets tenanted by skeletons. It is accelerated by every day's experience, and the rensojis are seen m the taxes which examination of publio expenses arising from liquor drinking, ns well as of graver consequences, at once discloses. There is, there can be, nothing personal iu this. It n solemn reality which cannot bo disguished. Tho London Times, as far back as 1858, stated: ''It is a peculiarity of spirit drinking that thu money spent in it is in the best thrown away. An Evening Wllh Auric nt tlrtsoury. Almost overy master mason iu the city was presont last night in Union Lodge to listen to the discourse of Dr. Rob Morris, poet laureate of Masonry. The lecturer, unfortunately, wns suffering from a severe cold, and the strain in reciting his poetry and giving an account of his Masonic researches, must have heen great, but in spite of this draw back the evening proved a very valuable one to tho members of tho craft, whose interest was undiminished from boginning lo end. Dr. Morris gave a very short history of Masonry in the United States from tho dato of the unti- Masonic movement in 1822 up to the presont time, and also compared Iho moral and social standing of masons of to-day with that of tifty years ago. It Is needless to say tho standing of the order to-day U very much superior to what it waa fifty years ago. Thu account of the lecturer's researches in thu Holy Land, anil the discoveries lie made whilo there, were especially interesting, and to most of tho oreihorn present the discourse proved the key to many points in Masonry they had not yet mastered. Dr. Morris has c-trriud his researches into many countries and has spent many yoars in proving what he always believed to be a fact—thu antiquity of Masonry, and ho has succeeded in bringing to light conclusive proofs that thu Ancient Order of Masonry dates back to tho huilding of King Solomon's Temple, During tho locturo Dr. Morrii rootled several beautiful masonic poems of his own composition, which elicited the warmest applauso from his listeners, At the conclusion of tho loot uro Dr. Morris coufenvd upon all prbsotit the degrco of the "Pilgrim Knight* ef the Oriental Order v of tho Palm Shell."
