POLITICAL POINTERS. Two political pots, the municipal and the Dominion, have been boiling quietly during the pnst week. Tbe latest development to strength en the hearts of Conservatives for the coming general election is the breaking-tip of Mr. Fielding's solid column in Nova Scotia. We wonder what Sir Frederick Borden is going to do with the Eye Opener. The Dominion Railway Commission are making nn inquiry into the rates charged by the express companies of Canada, Grit newspapers are making much ado nbout Tory papers not taking Dunsmuir to task re the hiring of Japanese laborers. As a representative of the Laurier administration Sir Henri Lotblnero, Lieutenant- Governor of this province culled upon Mr. Dunsmuir to form u government. In reward for his fidelity to the present government he was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of this province. The smaller the wages paid by the Wellington Coal company possibly the larger the barrel for campaign funds. It is reported that a scheme is on foot to divide the district of Oomox- Atlin for political purposes. The Liberals look upon the partition us being favorable to their obtaining nnother seat in this province. The Tories consider that it is impossible for the Grits to secure even one sent in this province nt the next generai election. Laboring men in this province are alarmed at the recent utterances of Sir Wilfrid Laurier re the Influx of Japanese. The formation of exclusion leagues should be curried out in every section of the province. The influx of Asiatic laborers is n menace to a white British Columbia, LET CURFEW KINO TONIGHT. Every family should have a curfew, which should positively "ring tonight" and every night if needed, .says the Magrath (Alberta) Pioneer. These curfews ure inexpensive, unit can be home made, Take a piece of siding two feet long and whittle one end down to a handle; then take the child that needs the curfew and bend him over a burrel. Now take the piece of siding In the hand and use it as a clapper. Put it on hot. Hi vide the strokes evenly and see that none miss. Good for u boy or girl up to the age of Ki, und applications are wurrented to cure the most pronounced case of street lonling that exists. The music the curfew makes is finer than singing "Where is my wnnderhtg hoy tonight?" WHSTWAtU) HO! NO CARDINAL FOR ENGLAND London, Dec, 14.— Great dissatisfaction exists among English Catholics because uf the fact that the next secret consistory, to be bold Monday in Rome, will not result in tbe elevation of an English churchman to the college of cardinals. Since the death of cardinal Vauglmn England has been without a cardinal At the last consistory it was confidently expected that, this country would be honored by the pope, but the hope of the Catholics was deferred. Now another consistory is to pass without the coveted representation in the college for any English speaking Archbishop, DRIVEN OUT BY JAP TRADERS. If he would 3end several wireless messages to Laurier and the machine- saying that no Jap immigrants are wanted in this province, the dream of a white British Columbia might be an accomplished fact. Liberals may take what cold com fort they can from recent evidences of Liberal solidity in Quebec. But there is no blinking the fact that English-speaking Canada is weary of the carnival of stealing at Ottawa. The Big Seven of British Columbia are now at Ottawa. They bail better make tbe most of their visit this time, for they will never get a chance to visit the capital again at the ex' ponse of the people of British Columbia. * • • One can not enlarge his stature by thought, but be can enlarge his soul. Siaee 1904 thin province Ims hud u solid Liberal delegation ut Ottawa. It might have been thought tlmt a phalanx sn strong and sn loyal to Its chief might have boon entitled to some consideration. The solid dele gatlon frum Nova Scut in has won for that province many mntorinl enn cessions, chiefly hy wuy of public works nnd appointments to the Civil Service. But British Columbia's solid seven bus won nothing except u public affront frum the premier when he passed over all tlie first elected members nnd culled Mr. Templeman from the Semite to join bin cabinet. It is u remarkable circumstance that not nne of tlie seven considers himself bound in uny degree to represent the interests or wishes of this province, or to do nny thing but blindly and submissively vote as he is told. During the three years tbat have elapsed since the lust general election British Columbia bus hud a definite issue with tbe Dominion government on the question of the financial relations of the province uml the Dominion. It was not at the outset nor is it now a dividing line between the parties in provincial politics. As a matter of faet when Premier McBride went to the conference of'Ca- nadian premiers at Ottawa, be went armed with a resolution that bad been unanimously adopted by the legislature of the province after a resolution offered by J. A. Maedonald, leader of tbe opposition, had been accepted by the premier. Since then, it is true, there have been disputes as tn the premier's conduct of his case, but at the recent Liberal convention in Vancouver, at which the Solid Seven weie present, the Liberal party of the province merely resolved to regret that the premier had not taken a stronger stand. That resolution may be allowed to supersede Mr. Templeman's extraordinary stntement that Better Terms is a dead issue. The Liberal party stands committed to tlie maintenance of tbe province's claim for Better Terms. Tlie position of the Conservative party on the subject is well known. The whole province then, as represented hy the two parties, is agreed as tn the justice nf the claim. And yet of its seven representatives at Ottawa whn are there for the pur pose of safe-guarding the rights of this province, not one has ever raised bis voice for her rights. This is, as we have said, an extraordinary position and nne that will stand a lot uf explanation in the press and on the platform when the Liberal candidates next appeal to tbe constituencies. Another question they will certainly be required to answer is "why has tbe promises made by LibeiBl candidates in 1904, that construction uf the National Transcontinental railway would be begun from the Pacific coast as early as elsewhere, been not only violated but ignored?" It is well known that railway construction benefits and stimulates a country only in proportion as it offers labor to the people und a market tn tbe producers. A line of railway piercing the Rocky mountains north of the inhabited part of this province, and pushing its wuy westward .with imported labor, nnd with all its material and supplies purchased outside No Honinc-No Grinding, Hollow around ai Illustrated $2.50 Double Concave for l:\tra Heavy Beards $3.00 There i 11 re th Set ol Two in Leather Case $5.50 Car bo Magnetic Strop $1.00 best ta the world is a reason why CARBO MAGNETIC Razors TWO WORDS TELL THE STORN ELECTRIC TEMPERING This method of tempering which is OUR EXCLUSIVE SECRt: I PROCESS, PRESERVES THE n,B«52NJ" the SUel blfldes• whereas tempering by fire, the only other method known, DESTROYS it. Sir Wilfrid Laurier announced' that Chinese immigration is not an issue In the eust. The wishes of British Columbia Liberals will prevail." What are the wishes of British Co liinibia Liberals? Hnve they ever been plainly expressed to Sir Wil frld Laurier? Tho fact that the Influx from Asia that is feared now is not Chinese but Hindus nnd Japanese,* doesn't really affect tho question, The Ilin du invasion may indeed have been unforeseen, and ns tho Hindus are fellow-subjects of the Empire, they constitute nn exceptional dlffl eulty. But the Japanese Immigration was foreseen. Steps to check it were promised nnd tho country was -told, were actually taken. But since then, a treaty has been signed between Canada and Japan giving all classes the right to enter in un Iiiui ted numbers. And this wus done with the silent consent of the seven representatives of British Co- umbla, the only men at Ottawa specially qualified or charged to speak for this province, It is no wonder that no story is considered too silly which muy conceivably help cloud that plain issue.
