 Batavia
Batavia. Capital of the Netherlands Indies is
divided into two districts Batavia the lower town
and Weltevreden the upper town, both of which
are connected with Tandjong Priok by rail. By
auto the distance is covered in about 20 minutes.
Batavia the old town, dates back to the year
1619 when it was founded by Governor General
Coen, and the Dutch built this town on the site of
old Jacatra on the lines of a town of Holland, with
a number of canals running through its narrow
streets, and fortified the place. Relics of the old
city still remain in the form of the Penang Gate,
Town Hall, Portuguese Church, etc. Old Batavia
is at the present time mostly inhabited by Chinese
and Malay, while a number of European business
houses are centred there. The Aquarium is also
situated at old Batavia.
Weltevreden
Weltevreden, the residential quarter, is about
20 minutes from Batavia, and like the latter is also
traversed by canals, which are much appreciated
by the natives who wash and bathe in these
streams in large numbers morning and evening.
Weltevreden (which means well - content) is a
spacious and picturesque town. It has two large
recreation parks in the centre of the town, bounded
on all sides by wide avenues and commodious,
bungalows, and the district extends some miles in
different directions. The Museum, situated in
Koningsplein West, should not be omitted as it
contains an interesting" collection of exhibits.
Buitenzorg
A garden town about 30 miles from Batavia.
Situated in the town of Buitenzorg are the famous
Botanical Gardens surrounding the permanent
residence of the Governor-General.
