Specially constructed as an all-purpose vessel she can handle simultaneously, passengers, motor cars, trucks, buses and all classes of railway equipment, including locomotives. At one time she can accommodate on her main deck approximately 115 motor cars, or 65 large highway trucks, or 28 railway box cars, on four tracks. In addition she can carry 1200 passengers. She is driven by four National seven cylinder geared diesel units which together develop a total of 5,600 shaft horsepower. Each pair of engines drives a three ton propeller through a reverse-reduction gear box. AU engines operate on heavy fuel, and any one engine can be stopped at any time for servicing, for adjusting and for annual overhaul purposes, etc., and the service speed maintained by the other three engines. The vessel is equipped with twin rudders and a Voith-Schneider propeller installed in a forward 'thwartship tunnel in the bow which gives a powerful lateral thrust to the bow of the ship to facilitate manoeuvering when berthing.
