QIA-Wvdd VICTORIA ON VANCOUVER ISLAND, CANADA VANCOUVER ISLAND, which nestles close to the northwest corner of the United States and flanks Western Canada, offers more in varied tourist attractions than any like area in the Western Hemisphere. From the sincere hospitality of regal, old-world Victoria to the rugged grandeur of the Forbidden Plateau is an easy motor trip of less than half a day. Vancouver Island is reached by a number of convenient ferry routes and the complete table of schedules in this folder will enable you to select the route and trip that will make the most of your holidays. Ferries from Seattle, Port Angeles, and Vancouver, B.C., have their landings in the Inner Harbor of Victoria, B. C. The trip to Victoria is often referred to as the "trip abroad in a day," and from the first moment ashore the traveler is aware of a different atmosphere, a spirit of calm contentment and a clinging to the cherished traditions of the homeland. Within a few steps of the ferry docks are the beautiful grounds of the Houses of Parliament dotted with shrubs and trees and crossed by flower-bordered walks. Here is the stately statue of beloved Queen Victoria. Facing the causeway on the east is the magnificent Empress Hotel which has done much to uphold Victoria's famed hospitality and charm. The hotel is surrounded by extensive floral gardens and lawns and just across the way is the spacious, glass-enclosed Crystal Garden with its mammoth swimming pool of warm sea water. Nearby are Victoria's many interesting shops, favorites with those in search of the unusual in china, linens, woolens, prints, and antiques. For the golfer Victoria offers, within fifteen minutes of the heart of the city, no less than six fine sporting courses. Lovers of wm& flowers and beautiful homes will revel in Victoria's magnificent residential district. Outstanding among the formal gardens of the world is Mr. R. P. Butchart's Sunken Gardens, on Tod Inlet, near Victoria. On the summit of Little Saanich Mountain, on the road to the Sunken Gardens, stands the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, where is housed the world's second largest telescope. Both the Sunken Gardens and the Observatory are located on Saanich Peninsula where also is Sidney, Island terminal of the Anacorres- San Juan Island-Sidney ferry and the Steveston-Sidney ferry. From Victoria the Island Highway leads northward past the Gorge with its Reversible Waterfall, through Goldstream Canyon and over the shoulder of Malahat Mountain. This is the celebrated Malahat Drive. From many a vantage point the motorist may enjoy a sweeping view of Saanich Inlet, Saanich Peninsula and the closely clustered islands of the San Juan group. On the Island Highway, 77 miles north of Victoria, is the historic town of Nanaimo where ferries leave for Vancouver, B. C. The highway continues northward from Nanaimo for nearly 150 miles, giving easy access to Vancouver Island's great wilderness. Here are such noted areas as Strathcona Park, the Forbidden Plateau and Campbell River with its fighting Tyee salmon. All these areas as well as many other parts of Vancou.er Island abound with fish and game. Vancouver Island is fortunate in having an abundance of comfortable camps and fine resorts meeting the demands of the most fastidious traveler. Even in the more out-of-the-way spots about the Island excellent accommodations are to be found.
