Mr. F. K. Young, general manager
for tlio above named company, camo
down from Quesnello on Sunday and
loft ibe next morning for tbe east,
whore he goes to look over and thoroughly test the machinery now about
ready to bo shipped to QucBiiello for
the new dredgti being cons true ted at
that point under llio direction of Mr
Young. During a pleasant hour
spent with him while bo wus in Ash
croft wo learned things of interest to
those engaged in the dredging busi*
neRS or about tu eiigige in it.
Mr. Young is iuturestud In tho
nuin.ll dredger now in operation at
Mormon liar nix miles from Lytton,
The imtuhinery was put in by him
and has siiiou buuu overliauieil, repaired and Improved, When ha left
Lytton for Queanello they bud
just got tliu d.edge to working
ho hu could not give uu tho
report of the last work done, but
ut' last -icnson'a work ho spoke freely,
Their rule Inst season was to run une
hour, then.take up thu first two feet of
liill-.B. It' they did not find $. or
bettor in the fu-bt two 1'eet of the
flume thin* would move to another
pluce. Tho two feet would catch
lumtouo third of the gold in the rifiles
and aometimes they would find two
or three lim.-s that amount. On the
wholo the plant was eminently successful as demonstrating ihat gold
could be raised by centrifugal pumps
As high aa $70 a day were taken out
and tho richness of the ground was
shown beyond question. Many defects in tho small dredge havo been
remedied in the new plant soou to be
completed at Quesnelle.
The cms and blue prints show the
machinery very plainly aud understanding^ and the improvements as
pointed out liy Mr. Young it is easily seeu will make a very great difference with the working of the dredge.
The machinery for thc new dredge U
all manufactured »t Pittsburg, Penn.,
iitd will be placed on a soow 80 feet
ong .nnd iii feet wide. A string of
sluices on each side of the scow is
arranged in such shape that ihe
streams from tho pumps can bo
turned from one slutoe to the other
without difficulty, so tlu-.ro will be no
stopping to wash up tlie boxes, three
men wilt do all the work en tho new
dredge itjslead of five or sis ns nro
requited ou tho sin ull one new in up-
(-ration. The new one will hftve ca
pacity for raising material at least
ten times greater than lho small one.
Tho cost of the dredge now being
built will be about (15,000. The
weight of the steel pipe, dredger,
pumps and rigging in the trout of the
scow is about 5000 pounds, nnd the
length of the stroke or din-; of the
dredge is 00 feet. About 1,000
square feet of gravel will be covered
by the swing*bf the divdgound pump
without moving the scow. The biz.
of the intake pipe is eight inches and
divided at the bottom into two compartments to kei-p out large rocks,
then redivided again into two moru
by across bar. A sleeve so an-au-jed
as to be worked by a lever from the
deck of tho scow will Blip dowu and
expand the mouth of the iutake if it
clogs and allow the rocks to drop
down. The dredge will tear up rotten
bedrock and will move boulders of a
ton or more in weight easily. The
scow is held in place by au ingenious
arrangement of steel tipped spars on
either side of the scow, and the
dredger is designed to work in thirty
feet of water, but could work at a
greater depth. The arrangement of
the dredge is different from tho Underwood dredge and while Mr.Young
speaks very favorably of the Underwood dredger and thinks it will be a
success, thinks bis own invention
posseses somo especial advantages
that no other dredger dees. M
Young Bays tho conditions aro very
favorable for dredging on thc Fraser
where ho will operate and his company havo -0 miles of river bed and
intend to have several machines at
work within a few months of the
completion of the one now building.
If tho new dredger does not pay f_i
itself every-0 days Mr. Young snys
he will be disappointed. Tho company also has ground on the Thompson River and intend to operate
dredger next season near Spcnco's
Bridge. Mr. Young is a pleasant
man to meet and is, while enthusiastic on the subject, a nun in whose
statements the utmost reliance can bo
placed. He will return to Ashcroft
on his way to Quesnelle tn abi>ht a
month, and expects to have the plant
at Quesnello completed within forty
days after his arrival with iho machinery . The benefits to be derived
from the successful dredging of the
rivers of British Columbia are almost
incalculable and probably no country
in the world offers so great Inducements to men wishing to engage in
this line of mining as duos ihis province.
The Clearwater Country.
J. W. Moxley, who undoubtedly knows
moio ot lhe Eecllnii nf lliu country above
than any eUmr white man, came down
this week and litis gnus on from Aslicrofl
10 Salmon Arm,- where his family lives, to
spend a few weeks la resting ami getting
in shape for nexi season's work,
Mr. Moxley left the main Cariboo road
St llielll curly lam June nnd imly ruturucd
when driven by the snow I rum (hu new
country which ho has been exploring this
season. Thu distance penetrated was, as
near as could bu told at a guess, ulimit 300
miles, ll requiring 17 dnys cunstunt travel;
Hiif" tn gel buck to lho Cnribno roud nt the
starting point. The dlvido was reached
by Mr. Moxley, whore tlio head waters ol
the Clearwater, Little Horsefly and Canoe
'Ivor nearly meet. From this roint Mr.
Mnxloy followed ihe Oanne river down to
tlie Fraser, and lull.Hug a raft, crossed
Hint stream ami explored Homo dislauee or
acrcck on tho other side. In hisjudgc-
ni(-„l it Is a good country for prospectors
to vlsil. A packer with burses went with
llim as far as lho open country would permit and I'uun tliouce turned buck. This
was In the latter part of June and from
then tn til bis return la October no hu.
ninn being was seen except when camped
bout 60 miles (rom Tele Jamie Cache
three Indians made their appearance and
stayed overnight In the prospector's camp.
A bountiful supply of caribou in camp
was sufficient tu satisfy his ever hungry
visitors, so Mr. Moxley'_ scanty 6loro of
fl->ur was not drawn on. The Indians iu-,
formed him Ihat 15 Crees wintered lu tbe
vlcliiily of Ti'le Jaune Csthe trapping and
bunting. Mr. Moxlev lound many creeks
with gold Indications and found en trying
a pan on almost every creek, gold, bul us
he says, not iu quantities sufficient to
keep him awake nights. He is nevertheless ol lhe opinion that many uf tbo creeks
will be louud to be valuable when itior-
mighly prospected. Iu some places banks
of gravel a hundred feet high are found
and large quantities of float quartz In
llieir beds. Some samples nf quartz
brought out by him have beeu sent away
fur analysis and tho quarlz Is apparently
valuable, dome splendid pfoccs of inica
from a large and apparently i n ex li au slit-It-
l.dge were aho brought out by li im. Commercial mica, 5 by 8 laches, Is regarded,
wlicu or good quality, clear and with good
ileavoge, ns exceptionally good, yet some
of -Mr. Moxley's samples showed a mens
uremoat of 8 by 12 inches, clear and transparent. They will bu submillcd lo a fair
lest, and if found satisfactory an expedition will visit these miucs next season.
The country has not, Mr. Moxley says,
been properly mapped and many inland
lakes as targe as small seas?are not put
down at all oa maps. Tho country is uol
difficult of access except whero ibe fires
have ruu through, and then It is terrible
traveling. "Tls a veritable hunter's paradise, as caribou, deer, bear are plentiful,
and smaller game bucu iu blue grouse,
ptarmigan, partridge, ducks, and geese on
thc lakes nud streams in abimdanco and
the waters teem with fish.
Mr. Moxley considers this section to be
particularly favorable for quarlz, prospecting, tbo quantities ol float quartz being especially great and mnny ledges to be Been.
11 Is not a hard country to get into and
we see no reason why prospectors should
nut, another season, explore some of this
promising country. There Is no danger
of Us being over crowded for many years
lu come, ns very lew signs of the presence
of man can be found over Ibe several hundreds of miles (raveled by Mr. Moxley.
One would think (hat a four months slay
Iu au unknown couolry alone would bo
euough but Mr. Moxley says he is going
lo ruluru early ip the spring and is indi tier,
cut whether he has company or goes alone,
tor, as he says, it Is all the same after you
get used to it.
The Horsefly Company.
Mr. John E. Ely, uow in charge of tho
Horsefly Gold Mining Company's properly in tho Horsefly, came down this week

lairs, Mr. 1). lairs liim-df being unable to

about 1,000 leel from the line of thc
Harper ground; They huve a drift iu the
bench about seveniy feet and from tbe
Inner end uf the drill have sunk aboul 17

The extent of tbeir strike is not known
bul the gravel is said to bo very rich iu
Iho bottom of the shaft und lho owners
are jubilant. One hundred thousand
pounds of lho Ward pipe is now on ils

very handsome specimen and was

season,
F. W. FOSTER
Among good finds Mr. Sargont of
the Slough Creek company has a
handsome $80 pieco found on Slough
Creek noar tho mouth of Nelson. A
few years ago a $-100 ono was found
on bed rock on Williams Crook. A
iiumliur of years ago a nugget valued
at $480 was found by Chinese miners
on Terr/ Creek. What old Cariboo-
ite can give us news of nuggets found
in early days iu tho many rich creeks
of Cariboo? Send down the histories
of big pieces found to the Jouu.nal,
and oblige th. readers of this paper
and help to call the attention of mining men to this too long neglected
section.
Men, women and children like lo
read of rich finds, nud gold mining,
aud without varying from the truth in
any respect those acquainted witii tho
early days of Cariboo can tell some
marvelous tales of strikes that occurred in tho times when in one
claim on Williams Creek .two men
took out in one ten hour shift over
104 pounds of gold. This article is
uot intended to unduly represent
Cariboo or lo be taken by those not
familiar with mining us being the ordinary thing to find big nuggets or
to take out gold by tho hundred
weight in a day. It has boon done,
but only by the very few union.; the
many thousands of prospectors. Of
lato years and for the future, minine:
in this section must be done through
tho use of largo capital, and no poor
man need vi.it Cariboo expecting to
find limes tike early days; but is a
good country for rich or poor if lliey
use good judgment in tho former
case or are industrious in the tatter;
otherwise it ia better to stny away
altogether and no man should visit a
strange section of tho country where
miuing camps are as a rule Irom ten
to 100 miles apart and the nearest of
thorn nearly 200 iirlcs from a railroad; where the supply of laboring men exceeds the demand as is tbe case in some sections
of Cariboo, as well as in Kootenay,
and living expenses high, without at
lea.t some money to depend on, in
case he fails to get work at first. A
good man can always get work in
Cariboo during the mining season,
but not in very many cases until he
has visited different camps and often
he may have to wait weeks for it; bo
laboring men are by this article
warned not to come on chanco and
expect to find employment, and if you
fail so to do Bud yourself destitute,
but have at least enough to pay your
way in and live for a few weeks, and
do not make the mistake of going
into Cariboo in March as many did
last year. As a rule work on ditches
and mines does not commence beforo
April 1st, at the earliest and iu many
sections some weeks later. As will
be seen by notice published in another oolumn of this Journal
application lor a charter to build a railroad from Ashcroft
Kamloops or some point
between, to Barkerville, wilt be made
to the legislature tho coming session
and will he no doubt granted, but
this does not mean an immediate
railroad, at least it is not generally bo
believed by the people of this section. When the time comes as it no
doubt will before many vears, that
capitalists can see their way clear to
matte a paying proposition of a railroad it will bo built and all will wel
come that time; nor is it far in the
future but the amount of freighting
and traffic must be doubled many
times before profit can bo figured out
of a railroad. At present and for the
past year about 100,000 pounds of
freight per week has boen forwarded
from Ashcroft including all way
points, as Lillooet, Dog Creek, etc.,
whero a railroad could not touch.
Suppose a railroad increase the business ten times, it would then only
mean about freight enough for two
trains per week and no down freight.
The time will come whon with quartz
development tho outlook will justify
the building of n railroad, but it is
not, as we stated before, the general
belief of tho people best informed on
the subject that r railroad can' be
built nnd successfully operated ior
some years yet, but- if capitalists
think otherwise aud will build it tho
people of Cariboo will welcome and
distal it to the beat ol their ability

thc rise, Tliero is a rumor that Barney iJuriia'-o is coming. He may bo
coming or may nut, but it nil tends
towards their ono great aim, to create h huge mining boom. The New
York World and other eastern palters have written warnings to the
country against theae rash speculation'- but in spite of this the great
ext'Ueracnt ntiil continues, and even
spread a** fur east as Chicago
if biivi'tal of the mines are quoted
Us eauhango. If this ralate of
aff-tirs lusts in ail probability it will
pn'iid to all the far eastern states,
hen will com. tbe crash. Many fortunes will be lost and made and
those who are unfortunate inongh to
have invested at top prices will bo in
the same fix as those of our friends
win-have been dabbling in SouthAf-
ricans.
There are aome people who think
this mining boom will extend to the
camps in Montana, Utah, Idaho and
other western states in a similar way
to the growth of tbe great land boom
from 1888 to 1S90. If this predio
tion comes true British Columbia
must be necessarily drawn in, and
thanks to the energy of aeveral of
our mine owners we are able to show
the world .oinething substantial.
It may interest our readers to beat
that tbe general impression among
mining men at Cripple Creek ia that
British Columbia is a wonderful ore
producing country, and those- who
have travelled through tho Caribi-o
and Kootenay countries return with
the most favorable reports; and as wi*
already kuow, many mines are bond
ed Ly American capitalists and development work is being pushed.
Some special fe-tturea in our Uriti.l
Columbia urning laws nre thought to
be by American mining men far
ahead of their own, the general ab
seuce uf claim jumping being espe
cially remarked upon, ll is commonly said that the British Columbia
government knew what it wan rIhhi*
when it made its lawa; in fact, it U
generally conceded that we have a
■j-ood mining country and exceptionally good mining lawa. Our development in .low but sure, and when this
mining boom spreads itself over the
'vest we are ready for them. We
have the mine.-), and in our case, no
wild cat schemes, but something sub
ntatitial to show and give in return.

Cripple. Creek Boom,
The Cripple Creek mines of Colo
rado are now attracting the attention
of mining men in ibe United States,
and, an ia said in that particular ace
tion of the country, the old Leadvtlle
days are being repeat-*.! with more
vigor, nnd the additional excitement
of gold discoveries tenda to relieve
the depression which im. -to long existed sinco the closing down of most
of the silver mines. Whether or not
this boom will last the luture alone
can determine. The fact remain,
that at tlie present time thousands of
men are pouring into the country by
every ooncewable means of convey
mice, and sleeping accommodation v.
very scarce. Some aro bona fide
prospectors leaving other camps fur
new fields; some -.peculators conn-

themselves, others are brokers, min

of tbe usual followers of mining
booms, with % large percentage of
gamblers.
Large mine ownera are very oharv
about letting people down into tbeir
mines aa in some cases visitors have
spread reports whioh have materially-
influenced the stock market. Some
of the orea from' some of these mine.-*
are so rich that the miners are
searched when coming out of the pits
and detectives placed on the watch,
as it waa discovered that a great deal
of ore was actually being carried
away by the miuera in their boots and
dinner pails.
But tbia great development work is
confined to only two or three mines,
the remainder being mere prospect
holes whioh show good outcroppings
just sufficient upon which to form
joint stock companies and enablejthe
mines to be quoted on Denver stock
exchange. Those who havo visited
large mining camps know too well
tbe appearance of the country under
tbia etate of affairs. Indeed, it
seems aa if in tho distance lor miles
roundaomo huge animal had been at
work digging holes and-throwing the
dirt out behind him'.
Naturally an excitement prevails
on tbe Dcuvi'i1 stock exchange, lately
established. Mining shares are
bought aod sold eagerly and all on

A Someraet, Me., man got out of a
t-erious financial Gx in an odd way recently. He became involved, and in
order to secure the services of a lawyer, offered aa a fee a life insurance
policy on a man in Boston. It waa
a straight life policy with no surrender value. Tbe bankrupt had lent
money to a young man many years
ago and had taken the life insurance
policy as security. The young man
refused to pay tbe premiums after a
while, but the holder kept the policy
in foroe. The lawyer took the rather
dubioua foe. About two weeks later
word eame from Boston that tbe man

fee and paid over the remainder to

i Murderer's Struggle for Life.
Worth Brown's troubles are over, lie
lies burled in tbe Mule graveyard beneath
the hill where the grounds of Sail Queullu
piisou slope gently into the bay. Tlie
wooden slab (hut rises above his lonely
mound henra only the number by which
he was known is a prisones of the slate.
It Is never without ihe tin-dow ol the
grim, gray walls within which tie passed
the last eight years of his life. Even ns
he lies cold in death YYerth Brown's body
is not beyond the range nt the ritlcs of tht
guards. Ue passed away on Thursday
afternoon. The lockup bell was hi-*
lonely kuell; the clatter ol the burs that
close the felons'cells his only requiem.
Brown did not amount to much lu lilt,
but llic .eeucs tuirouudiug hid death and
burial wure so dramatic that be will long
be remembered hy the convicts thut followed him to his grave.
Ho wns a murderer, and was sentenced
to imprisonment lor tlfteen years by the
lUperior court of Tulare count v. He was
■ecelved at Ban Quontio ou December 10,
1SS-3, and from Ihe date uf his first Christmas within lhe walla he was n model prisoner, ■'(ime time ago lie became a victim
heart disease. Ho wus sent to the Iios-
pltnl, but failed rapidly, until it soou lie-
inms apparent that his end was near. On
Wednesday Inst Dr. Lawtor told the

burning in Ihu felon. breast uu.il she
reached his bedside.
Dr. Lawlor devoted all his energies In
lhe case.
" 1 determined to keep that man alive il
I could." he said yesterday. "On Thurs-
ihiv morning at 8 o'clock he was as good
iib dead. I thought then that I could nol
save him. I cheered him lip by telling
liim Ihat his sisler was ou the way and
would arrive lhal afternoon. 1 gave him
whisky,spirits of ammonia and pumped
oxygen into him. Four brawny convicts
fanned him with big boards for hours. I
hud no Idea how much air could be generated by a fan unlil then. I stood at the
bedside In the draught feeling his pulse
and applying remedies, but though my
coat collar waa turned up and my coat was
buttoned tightly, those fans chilled me
through and through. I would go over to
the stove and warm |up and then I would
return to his bedside. Brown was a brave
fellow. Now and again he would sink,
hut I would say,' Brace up, old man, you
know you sister wants to see you.' Then
he would pull himself together, hia eyes
would kindle and he would take another
grip on life."
"I did not leave him for four hours.
She arrived at 13:30 o'clock. When we
heard the bus rolling up the road the boys
piled Ihelr fans furiously. I had to hold
Brown's nase to get the wbisky down his
thiout. I knew he was going fast, but I
hoped to keep him until his sister got
Ihere. At last she came. An officer
brought her through thc prison yard Into
the hospital. Bhe rushed upstairs and
"hrew herself upon her dying brother's
breast. Well, it wai all too much for mo.
I haye seen many men die, but 1 couldn't
stand that. The dying man in his convict clothes, the prison walls, the depressing surroundings, the weeping, heartbroken sister—well, I could not stand it."
The agonized woman had time only to
put her arms around lie-1 brother, to press
her lips to his and to exchange a word
with him. Five minutes after she entered
the room Werth Brown waa dead. Another
relative also Wltuessed the death.' Il was
Brown's uncle, who Ib under life imprisonment for murder.
When preparation^ fur the fuDcral bad
been completed nn Friday, 'he wnnlcii announced that tlio dead Hutu's Irk-nds

accompanied nl Ihu head, rear and on tbe
flnukfl by uiiiirint'd guards, wound Pa way
to the U'li.ly cemetery beneath lhe hill. It
was a strongly dramatic, acune. Just beforo Brown's enffln reached lho prison

convicts, nml also made the sights brighter
ou [liu Winchesters of ibc guards who
watched them from the walls.
The -.'prisoners stood with uncovered
heads ul the grave, Chaplain Drabm. read
a prayer and Worth Brown was laid to
rest. Then thu convict mourners r.lurned
tu the prison and were locked iu their
cells. Johu Tlmmous, an aasiBtuut in the
hospital, who was deeply iiuprei.ed by
liio-vu's death, wrote tbo fullowiug Hues

following, which may be true; it is
of Barney Barnalo. A country parson wrote to him: " My aim has always been investment, not speculation. When your bank came out 1
regarded its shares as an investment

sinking my little all in them, and a
good deal more. They have now
fallen to £'-i, and I am undone. I
I cannot face my parish as a bankrupt, and what am 1 to do? I throw
