/ 1 _. \ a The Eaqle 1 VOL. III. NO. 37. i > = FERGUSON, BRITISH COLUMBIA, OCTOBER 24. 1901. 2.00 A YEAR. I Mining Mon Must Exercise Patience and Stick-To-u.Itiveness. Mining Prospects Should Always Be Given Fair and Honest Development. ALL MEN ABE NOT Two of the most unfavorable symptoms in the mining fever are impatlenoe and restlessnessthe inordinate desire to hastily convert a promising prospect into a paying mine, and the hallucination that at some remote point or place the mineral conditions are more favorable. The mining interests of the country have suffered a great deal from those clearly definable mental conditions into which mining men are apt to fall. Impatlcneo has IVrocfcod Mora Mim and mining; communities than almost any other cause, says tho Butte Mining World. Hasty development ia likely to prove expensive and unprofitable. The desiro to make a mino before a claim has been properly prospected haa so often resulted disastrously as to give tho mining industry a speculative character to which it is not entitled. Prospectors and miners, like actois, often acquire a faith in a favorable destiny Not Justified ny tho Conclusions of good judgment. Their money is often invested mere on faith thtm on tbo findings upon which the preliminary steps of mino malting arc supposed forest. Even when all the conditions justify the attempt to create a produ clog mine, patience is essential to sue cess. OncOv satisfied that his vein conforms t.o tho proper mineral und geological conditions, thc minor should, in the language of the street, "stay with it." Montana's most conspicuous example of patience and successful mining Is that of Mr. Thomas Cruse, of Helens It is said that for seven long, weary years, despite hardships and discouragements of all kinds, ho worked faithfully on tho Drum Lummon mine, which finally bloBsomod into A Marvelous Unlit Mine and made its owner.a millionaire. Many prospectors have shown just as much ability to find promising leads as did Mr. Cruse, and like' him have lived to see their discoveries developed into paying minos; but unlike bim, and such mon as Mr. Stratton of Colorado, thoy did not possess tho stiek.-to-a-tivo facility and surrendered the advantages acquired by thoir kuowlopgo arid skill. Through Lack of Htitylng Qualities the average prospector wbo enjoys tho distinction of having located a great mining property has his enjoyment badly frilled along tho edges by the faot that tho ontiro product of that property goes Into other pockots than his own. It is related that an Irishman abandoned a mining property, which was subsequently developed into a great mine by sinking au additional ton feet in thc shaft. Wheu hu heard of tbo nows ho registered a vow of patience ia tho following languige; "Bogorra, if Oi Ivor get discouraged agin Oi'll sink tin fate furdor afore 01 quits the diggin's." A fortunate delayed telegram of tho owners ot tho property, directing discontinuation of tho work, prevented the abandonment of what afterwards bocame the famous Granite Mountain mine. Only a fow hours delay, in which A c.ruut Strike Was Registered In the mino, stood between its owners and tho millions that afterward found their way into their pockots. Montana alone could furnish enough illustrations of this type, showing the value of patience, to fill a book. If tho farmer, the merchant, tbe manufacturer, or tho professional man, demanded as quick returns from his investment of labor, capital and brains, as does the ownors of mining propei tin, tha entire system of our olvll life would go to pieces. In nearly ovory vocation of life, patience, extonding through many years, must bo exercised as the price of success, yot In tbo mining industry many Valuable Properties Are Abandoned if tho exploitations of perhaps loss than a twolvo-month fall to reveal tho coveted promise of wealth. If a mining property is worth developing at all, it is worth a patient test of merit, even if years of work are to follow a careful analysis of the mineral and geological conditions that environ the property, before victory is achieved. Impatience is often augmented by its twin symptom of restlessness that sees in tbe glorious and beyond brighter prospects than can bo hoped for in the present surroundings. Men Who Ought to Know Better suffer from this mlneralogical complaint, whioh takes hold of the system whenever a case of Indigestible impatience to get rich impairs the circulation of good impulses and effects the normal conditions of the mind. Thus it happens that so many well-to- do mining men Overlook Home Opportunities for the attractions of the North Pole, as tha csue may be, floundering around ''from post to pillar" in search of tho hiding placo of the fickle goddess of fortune. The dream of some golden Utopia takes possession of tbeir mind and tbo mirage of coming triumphs fills the otbit of their vision. If wealthy, thoy deprive the community or country in which they livo ofthe money, which, If Invested at Home, would double aud treble itself In short order; if poor, thoy transfer themselves as productive factors of labor to tlie tinsel-trimmed elsewhere Thus many prospectively prosperous mining campi aro robbed ot a fair opportunity to demonstrate their worth to the world LARDEAU'S MODERN TOWN Nearly Three Hundred Lights Con traoted For in Ferguson Yesterday. Tho Lardeau Power and Light Co., represented by Mr. Sawyer of Revelstoke, havo decided to install n lighting plant, which is now on tho way, in Ferguson without delay. Tho com pany asked for a guarantee of 225 IGc.p. lamps for a period of six months and yesterday nearly 300 were contracted for by Fergusouites. Besides thn hotels, business bouses and residences thore is to bo six street lights for which the to wnsito ownors have agreed to pay $5.00 a month, while a public committee will arrange for payment of the balance. Mr. Sawyer left for Revelstoke yesterday and will have a stock ot appliances shipped In at once, so tbat the buildings can be wired without delay. Separate contracts will be let, upon Mr Sawyer's return, for the completion' of tho dam, the station, tho poles, and the outsido wiring, so that thoro will bo as littlo delay as possible. If men nro avail able an<< thero is no unlooked delay in tho arrival of tho machinery Ferguson will bo Illuminated by olectricty beforo Christmas. Work hns boon suspended indefinitely on tlio Mountain Lion group. Tho second payment on tho American group is past due. The local saw mill is running full blast and Mr. Anderson may find it necossary to run a night and day shift to koop up with the orders. Development work is progressing nicely at the Horsoshoo on Trout creek. Mr. Hillman hopes to make a small shipment next month. Work will bo continued all wlntor. Messrs. Beaton and Kinman have completed tbeir contracts on the Landing-Camborne road. This shortens the route from the, northeast Arm to Camborne by two and a half miles. Will some kind person Inform us the difference between buying scab-made goods from eastern sweat-shops and scab-made goods in western retail stores? If the purchaser demanded the union ltbel from both lt would be a top ia tbe right dlraotlon. Mining Stook Quotations are Only Useful to Manipulators. Use Your Own Judgment and Don't Swallow all That is Told You of Stook Values. The Eagle has often been asked by outsido correspondents why it never published mining stock quotations. We have good reasons for not doing so, and, as the Mining World says, "while it is customary to embellish the columns of a newspaper with voluminous quotations as to the market valuos of mining stock, probably nothing is more unreliable in the whole range of commercial literature than such quotations. Aside from a few regular dividend paying mines, where tho output of oi e varies but little, stocks aro so sensitive to every rumor that the quotations of one day may bo unsafe to prodict their valuo on tbo following day. Not only the rumored condition of tho property itself, but tho interest manifested In adjoining properties, the prospective developments to be made In the district, the riso or fall of in tho prloe of machinery likely to bo needed; and a thousand and one other conditions affect the selling values of non-dividend paying stock. Thus it happens that quotations The Lardeau District as a profitable field for tlio judicious advertiser is unexcelled in tin.-, provinco. THE LARDEAU EAGLE Is the only medium actually covering the district, An ad, ir the EAQLE will roaota more people in FrgU8on( Trout Luke City, Thomson's Landing, Coma, pllx, t'amborne, Arrowbeiul, Ten Mile, Circle (lily and every KolHury iniiie in the distriot, than any other paper publishod. They servo a purposo only in showing tho general trend of values in a certain property, in which thu estimates may be overdrawn. An element of guesswork necessarily enters into the stock market. This is peculiarly truo of mining stocks. It may be said that tbey aro worth what they will command in the market, but ignorance of rumors or facts affecting tho condition of tho property must bo largely depended upon to give stability to market values. Many classes of stocks aro bulled or boared by extraneous conditions thnt havo littlo to do with tho actual productive valno of tbo proporty represented. Thoy have a speculative feature ontiroly distinct from their absolute value. Thus roil- road stocks, representing linos whose business will vary but fow points year in und yoar out, will riso nnd fall re- sponslvo to their speculative values. Mining stocks however, fluctuate in response to a bolief that tho mining proporty is growing bettor or worse as a prospective producer of ore. This belief may bo based on facts or rumors utterly without foundationthe selling value of tbo stock is affected for better or worso. In view of these facts the habit ot publishing mining stock quotations serves no publio purpose and is of little practical value to the man who is looking for investments in that direction." Wobber and associates have, at tho instance of their representatives here, thrown up thoir $30,000 bond on the I.X.L. group at the head of Brown creek, after spendiug $3,000 in development. A fino chuto of ore was run through while, drifting in on the ledgo when only ten foet underground, but further development was deemed un warrantable by tho bond holders. The men employed on tho property came down tho bill on Saturday, and the supplies have been packed over to the Black Warrior, where tho same syndicate will now seol: fortune. ' FLANS CHANGED The C. Work on tbo Beatrice mino in tho Lardeau, tho two-thirds Interest in whicli was bonded recently from the Boucher Brothers, is now well undor way. The new Route Taps More Mines, And Gives More Tonnage With Less Mileage. DIRECT TO FERGUSON Following closo upon the newsol the early establishment of a smelter plant in Ferguson by Chas. W. McCrossan, and tbe opening of a branch of the Imperial bank here, comes the welcome intelligence from a C.P.R. official, whose name is witheld on that account, tbat the railway company have altered their plans with regard to whero the railway will be built. Thn road will bo completed to the foot of Trout lako this winter all right, but no slip or wharf is to be built at eithc:' Twin Falls or Trout Lake. Thc com pany have decided to utilize the old survey of tho Kaslo and Lardo-Duncan railway, which started to build to this place in '07, but was afterwards bought off by the C. P. R This means that tl,c present branoh will como direct to Ferguson on the eastern slope of Trout lake, thus solving the question of winter navigation on the lake. It will also tap more mines witti less mileage than by the old plans. The C. i\ R. people are business men, ami for this reason alone tbeir present move io easily understood. They want the most tonnage for tho least mileage, and hy carrying out tbe above plans they will attain tlieir object. We neod not be surprised to see the iron horsi rounding the curve at til is end of Silver Cup mountain, across tlie valley from Ferguson, by this time next year. Others that wo know of may hear tho whistle, but they will hardly seo tho smoke. A RIVAL FOR CAMBORNE. One result, of townsite owners not advertising is now to bo seen in the Fish creek eamp. Tbo Camborno pooplo imagined tbey had a cinch, but never announced it In a newspaper. Now comes (1. F. Goldsmith with a rival foi" Camborno. The new townsite is Goldfiolds, and if we mistake not the-o will bo moro paid publicity than heretofore concerning Camborne. Mr. Goldsmith recently purchased from Roger E. Perry an interest in this townsite, and with Mr. Perry will proeeed'to slash the timber and lay out streets, survoy and plot the ground at. once. Messrs. Goldsmith and Perrj jave tbo making of a splendid town- site in Goldfiolds, adjoining as it does tho famous Camborno group, which comes right down to the townslto limits. A SELF HADE TOWN AND CAMP. Ferguson is growing. It is equipped witb private waterworks,; has it bank, and an electric light system is boing installed; tho railway is making direct for Ferguson mines, and a smelter plant on tbe townsite is among the. probabilities for this winter. Tho mines aro gradually increasing their working force and Ferguson's pay roll. Business is improving, there aro few idle men, tho standard wage is paid, thoro are no labor troubles, the oro output is increasing, and tho camp generally is prosperous. This happy state of affairs was brought about by tho residents tbemselvos who aro not waiting for outsido capital but creating their own wealth from our rich mineral resources. A HIGH-GRADE SHIPMENT. C. THURSDAY, OCTOBER il, 1901. The problem of temperance reform can be best dealt with at the present lime by the elimination ot private profit from the sale of intoxicants. salmon eggs are in process of development at the Tappen Siding hatchery, which will in due course find tbeir way into the river to ultimately provide material for the Fraser river canneries. A number of men are employed at this hatchery, whicli is a Dominion government establishment. But oh dear no, the government couldn't employ a few more men and operate the rest of the Industry. As Puck well says, what fools we mortals be. The pessimists who look wise and tell you that Ferguson's progress was on paper only should start a little Knockersville ol their own. They are out of their element in the pay roll.centre. The C. P. R. has apparently made up its mind to go after the output of tbe Slocan and Lardeau mines, almost the entire product from which is now being treated at the Trail smelter, and there is also an unconfirmed report that the great corporation intend taking immediate steps for the establishment of a re fining plant, in time to claim the bonus of $5 per ton granted hy the Dominion government lor lead refined in Canada before July, icjos. The opening months ot 1902 are likely to see the output of silver-lead ores substantially increased and the production for the entire country brought nearer to the normal stage than has been tbe case for the last half, if not the whole, of 1901. None of the much advertiesd bonanza lands ot the country or the world offers greater and richer opportunities to enterprising prospectors and miners than this camp, of which Ferguson is the centre and metropolis. Judging from the silly questions the EAOLE is asked by easterners every week by letter, some of them are innocent enough to believe that every mining claim blocked out on a map is a mine. Some people acquire their experience, others buy it. But it all goes to make up life. The development in the Lardeau mining district during the past year has been phenomenal. The rich strikes this season, the steady and permanent showing where work has been done and the actual production of ore have ail aided in stimulating mining and no camp in B, C. basal present greater activity. It will be quite within the truth to estimate that the merchants of Forguson have turned over more goods in the last three months than tbe merchants of all ihe other towns in the district combined. A growing mining camp such ns this is a large consumer, while it produces nothing but natural wealth and wiser men. Now that a bank is being established in the commercial centre of the Lardeau and Trout Lake mining district the postal authorities should see that we are given a mail service throughout the winter equal lo that provided during the summer season, lixtra caution should also be exercised in delivery, since the mail bags may be worth "looking into" from time to time. In these modern days of mining the investor is not bound to put his money into' a proposition simply because he has "faith" in it, probably not justified by good judgment. How many mining companies in the Lardeau have had their properties examined by a competent mining engineer? The average stock company will not pay enough to get a thoroughly reliable mining man on tlieir ground, in fact they don't want him there. The usual "report" is settled for on the basis of its value to the promoter. The greedy promoter will not pay enough tor a good property. All he wants is a piece of ground, a miningengineerV'report," flashey lithographed certificates of slock and his nerve. The rest comes easy. Ask a man to put his money into anything else, but mining stock, on earth without him knowing something about it and he would think you were crazy. But he buys mining stock just the same. Why ? Because lie either expects to get something for nothing or locate the sucker born the following minute. There is good and bad in all flotations of companies, but surely the mining industry gets more than its share of the latter. "If the Western federation of miners would invest the same amount of capital on a few j good milles, as tlioy are spending; to protect] their Interests, they could readily provide cm- ployment for their entire membership, and all would be equally Intorostod in the welfare and proliis ol the undertaking."Lardoau Eagle. If the Eagle and other papers who seem to be in the confidence of the people who direct the miners' unions could induce their Iriencls to change their policy as indicated in lhe above paragraph, there would he no more complaint about hard times in British Columbia. The advice of the EAGLE to its friends, the union miners, is sound and sensible advice, and if carried into effect would not only put money into their own pockets, but benefit the country at large. In the present strike at Rossland and North- port, union miners have lost and spent more money than would buy, develop, equip and operate several lirst class mines. They have also lost and spent more money during this strike than they will get back in increase of wages in thc next ten years.Calgary Herald. While the Eagle agrees with the Herald that a policy such as outlined above would result in good to all, we can not for one minute admit that the miners would be justified in throwing their principles to the four winds. To begin with, tbe Rossland strike has not cost the miners a hundredth part of what the Herald estimates. Were the miners and other trade unions to kneel nnd cringe to the whims of every foreign mine manager who happens to be temporarily at the helm the whole community would scon be reduced to the level of the low-wage camera coal mining districts. A standard wage-scale has been adopted in B. C. for miners, and outside of Rossland it is paid without a murmur. But if Rossland was reduced to a low-wage camp, others would soon follow. Hence the necessity of winning the present fight. The miners cannot afford to lose it, and they will not lose it. Once this fight is over, however, the miners should jointly go into business for themselves, as a side investment. fill ordets for V quantity of - r Sash and Doors James Anderson Ferguson Saw Mill I an: prepared to any description 0 Lumber on the shortest notice. RANKINE With the Coast to Kootenay railway the C. P, R. will have no need of connecting Revelstoke with the Crow's Nest as a through line. Hence the change in the company's construction plans in this district means that our branch will be cxpressely for local traffic. This is ono reason why they want to tap the most mines and get the most tonnage with the least mileage. It is unfair enough to the public of Canada to let a few money- grabbers corral all the salmon in our rivers, but when the Dominion government continues to run hatcheries to further the selfish interests ofthe private opcralor it is well nigh time the elector went to sleep for good. At present 8,000,000 Constant contact with the miners and laborers of this province has impressed the writer with the heroism and self-sacrifice that goes to make up the working classes. When one ol their number is injured by a premature blast, a falling rock, or the thousand and one mishaps which may occur in a mining camp, how willingly do we sec them come to their injured brothers assistance with money and sympathy. The workers may lack polish, but they are genuine. Among them the real heart-throb of humanity is felt. They have faults, and grievous ones, but their virtues are sufficient for us to have no fear of the co operative commonwealth wrought out of such material. It is true that they appear to be slow in wakening, but they are wakening, no doubt of that. Sooner or later they will free themselves. And when they do such shocking scenes as have been witnessed in this province, on the Fraser, at Rossland and on every hand in a daily struggle for existence, will vanish once and for all. Y Is the Coming Solid Town of the Lardeau and Trout Lake District Because of its unique geographical position; nature having provided as pretty a flat flench, at the junction of the north and south forks of Lardeau creek, as ever a town was built up on in British Columbia. Because lhe wonderful mineral developments during thc past season have been a marvel to outsiders seeking investment. Not only have thc old stand-by properties improved with depth, but thc new finds and many test ore shipments are exceedingly gratifying, and attention must surely be attracted this way. /_/ *W Because the shipping mines are located on Nettie L. hill, between tlie two creek forks; on tlie Great Northern hill just north of the town itself: and on the south fork and its tributaries, for all of which Ferguson is thc supply point. Because mine owners hire their crews in Ferguson and pay them oft in Ferguson. Bec wist the offices of many of the companies operating in the camp are located here. Because Ferguson receives the pay roll benefit from theso. working1 mines. Because this is the point whei mining men coming into the dii trict make their headquarters; t they can walk or ride and retur from most oi' the properties :, one day or less. Because ever) pound of ore from these mines coming down the bill lands firsl in Ferguson. From here il will be teamed to transportation on the lake, a distance of four miles. Because when the railway reaches the place where thc mines are will reach Ferguson. Because there is every natural ae vantage for the building up of a, great mining center. I1 i i .* But why give other reasons: We have the mines, thc pay roll, thc natural geo> graphical location, unlimited water power, etc., and thc right kind of people to make a town. The ore shipments, increasing business, and money and enterprise will doth: rest. Come and see for yourself. J THE NEW AND ONLY MAP OFTHIS DISTRICT Including Fish Creek and Upper Duncan River, compiled by S. Shannon, B.A , and A. P. Cummins, P. L. S., is to hand, and nil orders will be filled by the Eagle promptly, The map is certainly the best thing ever attempted in this line which has come to our notice. The Trout Lake divi. sion is shown in black, the Lardeau in red, and the Alnsworth in blue. A tenderfoot could take a copy of this map and find any claim in the three divisions. The mountains, creeks, wagon roads, trails, railway routes, and the location and name (by a unique index) of every mineral claim in the district is shown. Next to visiting the country in person this map takes first place. In fact every geographical feature is so well defined that one can see at a glance the nature ol our country, and the trend of the claim locations gives an intelligible idea of the mineral belts running through the camp. It is certainly the BEST WORTH FOR ONE DOLLAR ever offered in the map line of a mining camp. It is the first complete map of the district and should sell like tickets to the Pan.
