DANCE ENJOYED
. m^.FORCES PREPARING
TO INVADE ALBERNI
Widely Representative Gathering
and a Real Good Time
For All.
The initial dance of the New Alberni
Social club, held in Waterhouse's hall
on Tuesday evening, was one of the
most successful functions of its nature
in the history of the two towns. The
guests of the club included people of
New and Old Alberni, the surrounding
district, Parksville, the survey camps,
aud visitors from various parts, and
the number present was sufficient to
occupy all the space that could be
occupied with comfort.
Every arrangement for the pleasure
and convenience of those who never
tire of the dance so long as the music
plays, as well as those who like a little
rest or change of pastime, had been
made by the committee and not one of
the large party was allowed to feel a
moment's dullness. There was a cosy
resting room for the ladies, a cosy
Corner for any who wanted to occupy
it, card and smoking room for the
gentlemen, a perfect floor, two experienced and agreeable floor managers,
good music, refreshing refreshments,
and a congeniality that is seldom
found in a dancing party where so
many people attend as strangers.
Everybody present became acquainted,
and everybody seemed to thoroughly
enjoy every other body's society.
Dancing commenced at 9 o'clock and
was continued till 3 o'clock in the
morning, and that time, to the young
and energetic, was all too short.
The refreshments were supplied by
the ladies of New Alberni, assisted by
the ladies of Old Alberni, and the
goods were of such quality that the
strangers who were at the dance understand why it is there are no
dyspeptics among the people who live
in this locality.
The music was furnished by Mrs. M.
A. Ward, piano, and George Ward,
violin.
J. J. Burke and Alex Woods were
masters of ceremony.
Among those present were:
E. B. Schley, New York; John Paul,
F. A. Brewer, Vancouver; M. Tebo,
H. L. Gray, Victoria; J. Forsythe,
Nanaimo; Thomas Hirst, Parksville; L.

; | Evidences of Wonderful Development Soon
to be Commenced in and Around Alberni
—Railway Location Camp in Now Within Five Miles of Town.
Alberni is today on the eve of a
development such as no other part of
British Columbia ever experienced.
The forces which will contribute to
this development are preparing themselves on the outside, while scouts are
coming and going, day and night,
with a liveliness of action such as
might characterize the commencement
of a great military campaign.
Everywhere and in every mind it is
now a settled fact that the railway is
coming.
The wealth of this district in soil,
timber and mineral has become extensively advertised, while its advantages for manufacturing, shipping and
distributing, are conspicuous to the eye
of everyone who takes a look at the
location.
The completion of the railway, with
steamship connections at the head of
Alberni canal, means that hundreds of
industries will be in operation, mines
will be developed, and that vast area of
the most productive land on Vancouver
island will be made to produce grains,
roots and fruits in abundance.
Hitherto horticultural and agricultural pursuits have been retarded in this
district because there was no means of

Messrs Gore & McGregor, civil
engineers, arrived from Victoria on the
Tees last Tuesday night, and Wednesday morning commenced the work of
sub-dividing that tract of land known
as lot 45 into town lots.
This property, which fronts on the
original townsite, which it is understood the C. P. R. has acquired, was
recently purchased by a Victoria Syndicate, and as soon as the surveyors
have finished their work it will be put
on the market. It is a fine piece of
land for residential purposes, with
business possibilities also, and is already
tapped by the China Creek road.
A commendable feature of the survey
is that the lots will all be full size,

which the railway currjpany has decided
upon will affect this district first. The
company is entering, into partnership
with the soil. It wants to create traffic
for itself, and will start in right away
in order that there mx, -. be something
to set its rolling stock in motion as
soon as the raiis are ready for the cars.
Tracts of cleared land will soon be on
the market, and hundreds of farmers,
who are now working less profitable
soil in other parts, are eagerly awaiting the opportunity this will
them.
It is up to the farmers hereabout to
set a pace for all new comers, and this
can be done only by awakening to a
full realization of what is in store for
this district.
The man who owns a large tract of
direction. Frank Shepherd's party, at
Beaver Creek, has been divided into
two, and one section is moving further
this way, while yesterday J. J. Burke
and W. Derby commenced moving H.
H. Browiv.'s .camp to n point tb''„».jde
of Niagara bridge, five miles out from
Alberni.
Before the first of January the right
of way cutteis will be working out
from Alberni, and contractors will be
on the ground preparing for construct-
open for ion. Then the great commercial
activity that is in store for this
community will commence. There will
be building of wharves and houses at a
rate that will keep the hammers and
pile drivers working unceasingly.
Now is the time to get in on the
ground floor.
Panther in Limelight.
While the members of Frank Shepherd's survey party were coming
through the woods near Cameron Lake,
in an automobile, on Tuesday night,
a huge panther bounded onto the road
a few feet in front of their car. It
glared at the machine for a second,
and then ran down the road about fifty
yards where it took to the tall timbers
again. No one in the party had a gun.
This panther was seen close to where
Jack Forsythe, the stage driver, killed
one on his outward trip a few days
ago.

Another Football Match to be Played
this Afternoon.
A football team, composed of
athletes of New and Old Alberni, and
captained by W. W. R. Mitchell, met
the Siwashes on Clarke's field last
Saturday afternoon, and the game
resulted in a draw, no goals being
i scored. The playing was fast and
i furious at times, and the siwashes
showed better training than their
opponents. Mitchell's team was composed of men who had never before
played together, and some of whom
were sadly out of shape for the
struggle. The feature of the game
was the splendid playing of Capt.
Mitchell who played his own position
faultlessly, and was of great assistance
to many weak spots on other parts of
the field. It is a good sporting bet
that six such players as Mitchell could
double the score on a whole team of the
Siwashes any day.
Capt. Mitchells team was composed
as follows: Goal, Alfred Drinkwater;
full backs, H. Bishop, J. Forsythe;
half backs, J. Drinkwater, W. Norton,
A. Wood; forwards, R. Erickson, W.
W. R. Mitchell, G. Hyne, J. Drinkwater, R. Wood.
Another match is to be played across
the river, at 2 o'clock this afternoon,
and Capt. Mitchell, with a few changes
in his line up, expects to be able to
pull off a victory. A new football has
been secured for the game.
W. E. Simpson, president of the
North American Timber company, St.
Paul, Minn, and Mr. and Mrs. Austin,
Marshaltown, Iowa, were visitors in
Alberni on Tuesday tn:l Welie:day.
They came and went by automobile,
and in order that they might take a
good view of the standing timber along
the route, traveled slowly. Mr. Simpson said that all he had heard of the
wonderful timber resources of Vancouver Island had led him to believe
that he would see something worth
traveling niany miles to see, and that
after having seen for himself he was in
no way disappointed. It fus even
a grander sight than he ha'd anticipated. It was a revelation to him.
An informal musicale was held at
the residence of Dr. and Mrs. Morgan
Thursday evening, when F. M. Ren-
worth, of Vancouver, entertained the
gathering with piano and flute selections. Others present were: Miss
Hester Miles, Miss Margaret Riddell,
D. H. Riddell, Leonard Frank, George
Mitchell.
Clarke Conies In Again.
George Clark's Red Humber automobile is again on the run between
Alberni and Nanimo, and is working in
a most satisfactory manner. Mr.
Clarke brought it over the summit,
with four passengers, on Tuesday night,
and left at 3 o'clock the next morning
on a return trip. At the work of finding the way over the road through the
woods at night Mr. Clarke has them all
outclassed.
Becalmed off Carmanah.
The tug William Joliffe called at
Ucluclet on Wednesday, and reported
having seen a large four-masted
barque becalmed two miles off shore,
west of Carmanah Point, on Tuesday.
The tug signalled asking if assistance
was wanted, but recieved no reply. As
no report has been recieved from Carmanah it is believed the barque must
have got away safely.
W. B. Garrard and W. E. Green re-
tutned yesterday from a timber cruising trip up the coast.
Continued Destruction.
Hunters, timber and mining men,
who come in from the interior continue
to report the destruction of elk and
deer by panthers and wolves. It is
also reported that beaver are being
destroyed by these ravenous beatts,
and that they have been known to
destroy dozens of grouse nests during
the laying and hatching seasons.

A question for both political parties
to take up at their annual meetings is
the bounty on panthers and wolves.
It should be increased to such a figure
that it would be profitable for hunters
to make a business of the annihilation
of these destructive beasts.
Travels Far From Home.
Sierra Leone,
West Africa, Sept. 21, 1907.
To the Editor Pioneer News:
Hearty congratulations on the
birth of your youngster (Pioneer
News). I hope he will grow up
strong and healthy, as I am sure he
will fill a vacancy that has long been
felt, and will be a boon to the residents
of Alberni as well as to people needing
information regarding that town, I also hope he will have a circulation in
proportion to the journey be had taken
when I met him. He was only then
one month old but had succeeded in
climbing to the top of Tower Hill,
Sierra Leone.
E. Frost,
S. M., West African Artillery,
Sierra Leone.
They are having hard times with
their ships in and around Vancouver
harbor these days, and that should
make the Canadian Pacific Railway
company all the more anxious to hasten
the completion of the E. & N. exten- j
sion so that Alberni harbor may become [
the shipping point for the big Oriental
and other liners that now have to take
I
so much time and risk in getting in
and out of places they should never be
called upon to travel to.
Alberni grapes have been well advertised this season. "Do they ripen in
the open?" is a question often asked
by people on the outside when they see
these products of our sunny valley.
And when you tell them the truth—
that the harvest was ready for picking
four weeks ago, and that we still have
the ripening weather with us, they are
inclined to believe that you are
romancing. The people who have actually seen for themselves—and they
have been many this season—know
different, and because what they have
learned has surprised them they talk a
lot of useful talk about it.
McKenzie King is in Vancouver
estimating the amount of damages to
be paid to Orientals as a result of the
recent anti-Asiatic riots in that city,
and Hon. Mr. Lemieux is going to
Japan to confer with the authorities
there in regard to emigration from that
country to Canada. In the meantime
a few thousand more Orientals, who
will later be found on the construction
of the Grand Trunk Pacific railway, are
headed this way. We may expect the
Dominion to do something practical in
the way of restricting the influx of
undesirables from the Far East after
Senator Cox and his associates have
received an ample supply of them, and
McKenzie King has had further opportunity to estimate damages.

Saturday, October 12, and Volume 1,
No. 1, has been received at the office
of the Alberni Pioneer News. The
Standard, in a whole hearted way,
expresses. its pleasure in the good
times prevailing in its own constituency
in particular and the province in
general, and says its first aim will be
to appeal to the people of Ladysmith
as a first class, reputable newspaper,
and one that will be of considerable
service in making known to the world
the advantages of the town in which it
is published. It is brim full of confidence in regard to receiving that
support which was apparently held

Standard strikes a true note by its
expression of determination to earn
that support. The new paper endorses

ALBERNI PIONEER NEWS.
Saturday. Oct 26. 1907
"HELLO" SYSTEM
BEATS THEM ALL
The Two Albernis Now Have an
Original Telephone
Service.
The instruments arrived early this
week, and both New and Old Alberni
can ■ now boast of one of the most
original telephone systems in operation
since Noah called the dove back into
the ark.
The service may not be the most
satisfactory that has ever been organized, but when the subscribers become
better acquainted with all of its many
peculiarities it will be proof against
complaints.
In addition to being a great convenience to the people of both towns
the innovation has other merits. It
has served, for instance, to teach
people from Victoria and other cities
that they do not know all there is to
be known about ''116110" connections.
The man who is accustomed to simply
taking down the receiver, hearing a
sweet and gentle voice ask, ''Number, '■
please?" answering the question and,
then finding himself in communication
with the desired peuson, is up against
a dozen problems when he tries to j
work the racket over the Alberni lines.
In the first place there is no Central,
and this, by the way, is a right down to
date idea.
If you want connections with the
Pioneer News, for instance, the in- j
struction book will tell you to ring I
once short, once long, and once short j
again. There are other subscribers
who are privileged to listen to more
music than this call provides, but that
is probably because they were slower
than the newspaper to get into the
game, and had to be offered greater
inducements. Three short, one long,
two short, and four long, with the
privilege of half a dozen either short
or long extra, is what the bartender in I
the Arlington hotel is treated to before
he is called upon to have a cocktail
ready on the bar for the busy man who
is coming in a hurry from across the
street.
All through the day and night of
Thursday and Friday a few ingenious
subscribers, assisted by a large number
of sympathizers, whose names are not
on the company's books, tried to (ind
the combination of notes that would
bring the mixer of the Alberni hotel
up to the talking place, but, music
being more to his liking than speech,
he declined to interfere with the
delightful experiments.
The man who presides behind the
elbow rest in Rollin's hotel, in New
Alberni, became confused over so
much bell ringing, and is reported to
have, several times, thrown pieces of
silver at the 'phone while he shouted
"Hello" at the cash register.
One of the strongest advantages of
the system is that when one bell rings,
all others join in a chorus, and the man
who takes down his receiver can hear
a dozen voices instead of only one
which if the limit in nearly every other
comrriunity where telephones are used.
This advantage is probably appreciated
more by the local newspaper reporter
than by anyone else, as it enables him
to sit in his easy chair all day long,
and by keeping the receiver close to
his left ear, gather almost all their is
to be gathered in the news line.
The horses in Fitzgerald and Burke's
livery stable have begun to think that
their home has been transformed into a
central fire hall.
But to return to the problem of the
thing—how to get the whole works
going—the mystery that baffles visitors. Ask George L. Courtney, James
Phair, or John Virtue, of Victoria, who
were in town on the day the installation
of the system was completed. They
each had a burl at it. They turned and
turned the little handle on the Pioneer
News 'phone till they loosened the
screws that held the instrument to the
wall, and not a bell in any other place
in either town sounded. They tried it
with the receiver off and with the
receiver on, and the results were just
the same. The secret of manipulation
is not to be here disclosed. Too many
people already know it. Music is good,
but too much of a good thing is not
appreciated even in the office of the
farthest western newspaper in the
Dominion of Canada.

automobile on Thursday evening.
Miss Alice Drinkwater was among
the arrivals by motor car on Thursday
evening.
John A. Virtue, George L. Courtney,
and James Phair, of Victoria, were in

went to Beaver Creek where they were
joined by J. McKenzie and James
Hills. They were soon on the trail of
bear, but Mr. Schley did not have the
required time to locate the game. He
will return about the middle of December when bears are better worth
shooting than now when the'ir coats
are none too good, and take back to
New York with him some evidence of
an encounter with the king beasts of
these forests.
Water Rushes Into Empress.
The Empress of China, loaded for

called out to help pump the vessel out.
About eight hundred bags of flour were
destroyed, and other freight was damaged. The Empress has a bad list to
starboard.

trade. It turns out goods that catch
the eye and stand the wearing test.
H. M. Heuston, who enjoys the
distinction of being the only bear

Roosevelt was ever jealous, and who is
now resident in Winnipeg, is reported
