EXPLAINS ORIGIN
OF CRUDE ART
Hamilton George Tells History of
Strange Carvings in Rocks
on Lakes.
The origin of the crude art work
found on the rock walls of Sproat and
Great Central lakes, and believed by
some white men of scientific tendencies
to be pre-historic, has been explained
by Hamilton George, an intelligent
young Indian who was educated at the
nv'ssion.
Hamilton George saw the reproductions of the strange drawings in the
Pioneer News of last week, and read
with much interest the speculative
opimon of how they came to be there.
He volunteered to enlighten the readers of this paper with a few facts and
some legendary evidence in connection
with the drawings, and this in brief is
his story:
Many years ago—no one knows how
many—there lived in this vicin'ty a
sort of super-human Indian named
Quot-e-yat, and it believed by some
that he still lives, but that his form is
im iiible. He had a record for vanquishing fierce and evil monsters that
would back St. George of England into
heroic ins'gn'ficance.
WILD CAT PROPERTY
SCHEME IN VICTORIA
McConnell & Taylor offer Remote and Bad
Land for Sale as Choice Lots in the
Town of Alberni--People Who know
Situation Express Indignation.
START SURVEY
OF NEW ROAD
Provincial Government Undertakes
Work that Will Help
Alberni.
Copies of the Colonist and Times
of Victoria which arrived here last
Monday contained glaring full page announcements of a sale of Alberni town
lots to be commenced on Tuesday
morning.
The real estate firm of McConnel &
Taylor was advertised as the selling
agency for Mr. West C. Nelson, and
there was hot air enough all through
its big-talk about opportunity knocking
Quot-e-yat was a protector of his I at peoples' doors to make an ordinary
people whose principal enemies were, patent medicine advertisement seem
by com-
the monsters of the deep. At every
opportunity he gave battle to these
evil thing, but was, much to his sorrow,
unable to extingu'sh them all, so he
conceived the idea of traveling about
from place to place, and carving
likenesses upon the rocks by the
waters where they would be seen by
Indians afloat in canoes. The pictures
served as a warning that such creatures
were hiding in water near by waiting
for a chance to attack and devour.
There are Indians now living who
most carefully obey these warnings,
and make no noise with their paddlss
for fear that the evil inhabitants of the
water will hear them and rise to destroy .them. If, by accident, some
noise should be made, the occupants of
the canoe will immediately rush for the
shore.
White men say there are no whales
or other such monsters in these fresh
water lakes, bnt the Indian has lived
here longer, and seen more, and knows
different.
Buys Horses and Buggy.
Harry Fitzgerald returned yesterday
from Vancouver and brought with him
two smart looking horses and a handsome new buggy, all of which he has
added to the stock and equipment of
the livery firm of Fitzgerald & Bnrke.

P.O. Box 27, - Alberni, B.C.
seem like a real dead one
parison.
The people of this community immediately recognized the advertised real
estate as the property with the big
gulch through it, and which was bought
by Mr. Nelson, not very long ago for
about the same amount of money as' he
now asks for one of the hundreds of
lots he has cut it up into.
The profits he is attempting to make
are outrageous.
The prices asked are out of all comparison with the highest asked for any
other properly in this ne:ghborhocd.
Six acres of property just as good
can be bought for the price asked for
one of these so-called lots which are 33
xl20 feet.
The advertisement is a brazen nrs-
representation.
It is a daring wild cat scheme.
The property is two miles away from
the nearest deep water wharf and it is
all heavy woods between. The d'stance
from the old town to the Nelson site is
three quarters of a mile.
A large part of it is wide and deep
gulch unfit for man or beast to live on.
Two aged horses died of starvation
on it last winter.
The whole proposition to sell that
Nelson property as town lots on any
terms is enough to make some people
laugh and others boil with indignation.
There was some laughter and much
indignation in both New and Old Alberni when the people recovered from
the surprise occasioned by the first
glare of the advertisements.
Steps were at once taken to make
public in Victoria the true state of
affairs in order that innocent people
with money might not be caught, and
that the reputation of Alberni might
not be injured by this rank adventure.
Prominent residents of Victoria who
have recently been in Alberni, and who
know the ground have assured the
Pioneer News that they will do what
they can to acquaint the public with
the facts.
The Pioneer News has previously
warned its readers of wild cat schemes
that might be sprung. It warns them
once more.
Beware particularly of the man who
advertises that he has had "inside information." The police always keep
close watch on that sort of man when
he hangs around a race track.
Ladies Transact Business.
At a meeting of the Ladies- Aid society of the Presbyterian church, held
on Thursday, it was decided to serve
afternoon tea and other refreshments
during the afternoon of Fair day, Sept.
20. The sum of $30 was voted towards
the manse building fund. There were
present at the meeting, Mis, (Rev.)
Glassford, Mrs. Riddell, Mrs. (Dr.)
Morgan, Mrs. Burke, Mrs. A. L.
Smith, Mrs. Wilkinson, Mrs. Forrest,
Mrs. Cox, Mrs. Brand, Mrs. Gill.
Rushing Business.
J. J. Burke made a trip to Vancouver and return this week. He had business to do in the Terminal City, but
found it so slow in comparison with Alberni that he only remained three
hours.
Cutting Right of Way.
There are thirty-five men at work in
the vicinity of Nanoose cutting right of
way for the railroad into Alberni. The
party is in charge of D. K. Robertson.
G. H. Leslie and G. W. Spittal, of
Browne's location party, came in from
Cameron river this afternoon to spend
Sunday in town.
W. V. Morse and Robert L. Morse,
who have been in town all week, will
leave tommorow for Victoria.
Ernest Connor who returned last
Saturday from Seattle has left for the
woods oh another timber cruising expedition.

JAMES BECK.
A party of surveyors, under Dennis
R. Harris, C. E., started work this
week to locate a line for a wagon road
from Goldstream to Mill Bay along
Saanich inlet, and if the proposition is
proved feasible the Provincial government will have the road built.
The proposed road would overcome
the obstacle to traffic that now exists
in the shape of Sooke mountain, and
make Victoria easily accessible to many
farmers who are now practically shut
off from the markets of the Capital
City.
The new route would also be of great
advantage to automobilists, as it would
make an easy run all the way from
Victoria to Alberni, and this would
mean considerable direct benefit to
this community.
Good Grouse Shooting.
Everybody and everybody's dog took
to the woods last Monday, and the
number of fat grouse in the district
was somewhat reduced. Many large
bags were reported on the first day,
and the Pioneers News has no proof in
contradiction of the various stories that
have been told by the hunters. It has,
however, been furnished with real evidence of the good marksmanship of
Anthony Watson, of New Alberni, and
M. A. Ward, proprietor of the Arlington hotel.
Many hunters have arrived from the
outside during the week, and all report good shooting.
From Clayoquot.
H..C. Brewster, M. P. P., of Clayoquot, accompanied by his wife, was a
passenger on the Tees for Victoria on
Thursday.
Mrs. D. McDougall of Clayoquot,
was a passenger on the Tees on Thursday en route to Fern-'e to join her husband who was lately appointed fire
chief for that city. She was accompanied as tar as Victoria by her two
sisters, Mrs. O'Leary and Miss Mc-
Conell, of that city, who had been visiting her.
M. Carlin In Town.
M. Carlin and J. G. Billings arrived
yesterday from Victoria and will leave
again tomorrow. Mr. Carlin is heavily
interested in Alberni farm and town
property. He is satisfied that this is
the future metropolis of Vancouver
Island.
Mrs. W. B. Garrard left by motor
car yesterday for Victoria.

TAKE NOTE qF EXHIBITS.
The Victoria Coloirst has taken conspicuous notice of the display of Alberni fruit that was recently sent by
the local agricultural society to the
Capital City. It says:
The ho.vcultural society of Alberir
is taking v'gorous steps to advertise to
the world ihe pecu'iar advantages of
that section as a fru't grow'ng district. The people of Vancouver island
are well aware that fruit of all k'nds
can be grown in Alberni and its environs as well as in any sect'on of the I
Pacific slope, but the strangers need to
be educated. Hence the actio:i of the
Alberni Horticultural society wh'ch has !
sent exhibits of fruit produced for ex- j
h'bition here.
One of thesa exhibits is to be seen in
the room", of the Tourist association
and the o'.fcer in the windows of the
Royal Guarantee & Trust company at j
the corner of Yates and Government j
streets. A feature of the exh;bits is a
d:splay of magnificent Alexandra ap-
pies, the equa1, in size and color'ng, to
anything grown on the Pac'fic si pe.
There f:re d~o several var'etks of
plums, green gages and cherries, the:
latier st;ll clustering thickly on the,
parent branch. Several bunches of]
grapes are also shown and though,, of
course, not yet ripe the sizes of the
bunches promise a splendid harvest of
this delightful fruit a little later en
Altogether the display, while limited in
size, shows what can be done in the
way of fru't raising round Albenr, and
it attracting considerable attention.
The Nana:mo Free Press also gives
some prominent space to mention oi
the exhibit.
MR. ROFF'S LETTER.
The letter contributed by Mr.William
Roff to this issue of the Pioneer News
is timely, and worthy of the interest of
every person at present resident or interested in^this community. It accentuates the suggestions of If st week
that it is not too early for the formation
of a board of trade, or to take into consideration the advisability of forming a
munic'pality. Of course we have not
yet suffic'ent population for a munxi-
pality, but it is such a very short time
till we will be qualified in this respect
that we should be prepared and awaiting the privilege. In the meantime a
board of trade, or even a more widely
representative body, could do much
along the lines of preserving the common utilities and advantages that ser-
round us.
Break Down on Summit.
After the remarkable record of fourteen thousand miles without an accident, made principally on the road between Nanaimo and Alberni, Walter
Thompson met with a mishap on the
summit on Saturday night last when
the shaft of his automobile broke. He
had as passengers Mr. and Mrs. Bender of Seattle who were on their way
in to spend a vacation hunting and
fishing, and realizing that it was out of
the question to attempt to get started
again before morning he set out on
foot for town, and covered the distance
of seven miles in less than an hour and
a half. On arrival here he immediately
dispatched a livery rig to the assistance
of the belated travelers who were
brought into town in comfort, ar.d
quite pleased with their experience.
The next day Edward Grandy, the New
Alberni liveryman towed the d:sabled
machine back to Nanaimo where it was
saon made ready for the road again.
Credit to Alberni.
The new addition to the AiTngton
fotel is now ready for the accommodation of guests, and M. A. Ward, the
proprietor, now has a house that is a
credit to his enterprise, and that will
also prove a strong drawing card for
Alberni with the tourist and general
traveler. The hotel now contains 26
rooms, and the newiy furnished ones
are as comfortab'e, ^as luxurious, and
in as good taste as any to be found in
any first-class hotel in British Columbia. Hot and cold water • baths are
convenient to every room.

TIMELY ADVICE TO
PEOPLE OF ALBERNI
William Roff Draws Attention to
Duty of the Present
Hour.
Editor Alberni Pioneer News:
Sir,—I have no doubt you have had
many personal congratulations upon
your public spiritedness and individual
business courage in publishing a newspaper for Alberni. Permit me to take
a more public way of expressing approval of your action, and, by means
of this letter, to be the first correspondent to thank -you for taking the initiative in this great, important and responsible undertaking, and compliment
you upon the success of your first
efforts.
I sincerely trust that the paper will
be profitable to yourself, a means of
immech'ate usefulness to the inhabitants of the present day, and an aid
towards making Alberni an important
city in the very near future.
While thus writing you allow me to
take advantage of an opportunity
which your paper affords.
I am fully conscious of my recent advent into this neighborhood, but for
thirteen years I have been connected
with it by family ties, and three years
ago I became personally acquainted
with it. I hope therefore that it will
not be thought impertinent on my part
if I address some remarks upon what I
think ought to be done in preparatory
work.
It is patent to everyone that a city
requires many things which can be had
in its infancy at almost nominal cosl
which, if they are not then secured,
can only be obtained afterwards at an
enormous price even if money can procure them.
If it is des'rable that A'berni should
grow every means should be taken now
not only to render it possible but to
give every facility to induce its growth.
The present inhab-'tants are not only
pioneers who should reap a benefit
from their labors by an increase of
population and consequent rise in the
value of property, but they are trustees of posterity. Upon them great
responsibility rests. Upon their action
the future is greatly dependent.
I have had frequent opportunities of
meeting many of them and am greatly
impressed with the soundness of judgment and good common sense prevailing among them. I have therefore the
utmost confidence that they will rise to
the occasion and adopt a course of public action which will not only aid materially in the growth of the city, but reflect honor to them and gain the gratitude of future generations.
I must not trespass upon your space
which I know is limited so I will merely mention two things which I think
are press-'ng.
The first is the water supply without
which no city can live.
This includes water for household
use.
Flushing of sewers.
Electric l'ght.
Tramways.
Telephones and everything requiring
power.
I believe the water rights can be reserved without any cost until the time
arrives to justify the creation of a
municipality. »
Another essential for a prosperous
city is its promenades and open places
for air and recreation.
No location can give better opportunities for these than Alberni.
The river frontage is so grand that
it commands to be reserved to the public, and says to all builders and other
obstructionists, ' 'Hands off.''
Yours Faithfully,
WILLIAM ROFF.

Will Open Drug Store.
W. S. Terry, of the firm of Terry &
Marett, Victoria, was .in town this
week for the purpose of looking over
the field for a drug store opening. He
was highly pleased with the bus'ness
outlook, and before he took his departure on Wednesday said he expected
to have a store opened and ready for
business before the end of the month.
The stock will be the same in quality
and variety as is carried by the firm in
Victoria and this is sufficient assurance
that it will meet the needs and tastes
of the people of Alberni.
