P, Jennings read a paper before thc Canadian Mining Institute at ihe lust meeting on Leaching Copper Ores hy Sulphurous Acid, and among oilier things he snid : The writer has hud occasion in tlie course of his professional work to investigate a unique process of leaching copper ores hy the use of sulphurous acid, which has been patented in the United States by James W. Neill of Salt Ijike Oity, t'lah. The process, while yet in the experimental stage, bus features whicli will uinke it nf interest tn members having deposits of ropper ore remote from transpnrtal ion, fuel and fluxes. The native oxides and carbonates of copper are readily soluble in sulphurous acid wiili the formation of cuprous sulphite. This salt is Insoluble in Water, hut soluble in water containing sulphurous acid, from which the copper can he preclpl'aled by driving otf excess of sulphurous acid hy licit. The precipitate is 0U| rntli sulphide and contains 40.1 percent of copper. This salt is a heavy crystalline compound of a dark red color, which settles readily lii,in lhe solution and can he washed by dfcaiiLitlinii, dried uud reduced to metallic copper hy fu-ing on the hearth of a reverberatory furnace, The process is suitable both foi sul pliide and oxidized ores, the former being Hrsl rousted to expel lhe sul phur and convert ibe copper com piiunils into oxides, us sulphurous acid does mil attack sulphides. The ideal ore is one currying oxides or cut- donates of copper iu u silicious giiiigue; lime and magnesia ure objectionable, as they dissolve In sulphutousacid uml, while they do not materially interfere wiih the reactions, ihey consume a certain amount, of sulphur aud su increase I he enst of I he process. In practice the ore is crushed to pass a '*l mesh screen, placed in covered tanks tilled with water containing sulphurous acid and kept in a state of agitation liy forcing a current of sulphurous acid from the gas generators through the solution : this tilings euch pal tide of ore in contact with Ihe acid and also keeps Ihe water saturated with sulphurous acid gas. All the copper will pass into solution in from I to I hours, depending on the physical condition of lhe ore. The charge is now drawn into a settling tank, lhe sands allowed to settle for a few mOUIOIItS, when the solution, which tarries more or less slimes, is decanted into a lllter press that separates the solution und precipitating the copper us flipro cuprous sulphite, wl luh settles rapidly to lhe bottom of is run into another tank while siill hot aud freed from the small amount of copper thut is in solution as sulphate by means of a little lime, The precipitates are drii d and smelted to fine copper. The piant can he so arranged lhat nearly all lhe sulphurous acid except that combined with the copper can l>e saved and used again. One pound of sulphur is required to convert I pounds of copper into sulphite, and another pound of sulphur will keep the cuprous sulphite in solution, hut the greater part of tbis second pound of sulphur can be recovered. In practice aliout one pound uf sulphur Is tequlred to treal 8 pounds of copper contained in the ore. The sulphurous acid is produced either liy burning pyrites or sulphur; the former can lie obtained in most mining districts and the latter orctirs in great beds in Utah. When the original ore is a sulphide it wiil furnish, by roasting, ample sulphurous acid for its own treatment. Tlie advantages of the process over lhe sulphuric or hydrochloric uold method are: 1. Cost of thecheinicul is low. 2. II is generated on Ihe spot hy lhe use of a very simple plant, .'). A relatively small amount of the chemical used. I. The copper Is separated from the solution hy heal alone, ii The copper produced is practically free from impurities. .Sulphurous acid produced by masting pyrites is the cheapest chemical procurable in the western country and lhe planl is much simpler than that used in making sulphurous acid. A iiiiii uf copper converted into cuprous sulphite requires Init half the sulphur Ihut would be required to convert it. Into ciipric sulphate. Cuprous sulphite is precipitated from the solution without tlie use of scrap iron, which is a greal. advantage in remote districts. Ill southern Utah, for instance, scrap would cost from $40 to $50 per ton and i,.„„. ti ... o, ->- - NOTICE OF FOBFEITURE.
