UBC AUTHORS a THEIR WORKS 2002 University of British Columbia Library and Office of the President Authors' Reception March 2003 UgC W The Library UBC AUTHORS a THEIR WORKS UBCAuthors 8 Their Works 13th Annual Authors' Reception he annual UBC Authors' Reception is an important reminder of the amazing range of innovative ideas and accomplishments by the researchers, performers, and artists of this university. This is one positive aspect of our size: few institutions can provide such a wide variety of disciplines or boast such a productive faculty. The items listed in the catalogue, and on display at the reception, also reflect the changing face of scholarship: while books may still predominate, compact discs, videos and music scores are increasingly evident. The "virtual" publication has made its appearance too, with on-line exhibits from the Museum of Anthropology and a delightful children's book by Bob and Anne Adams. The transformation in the forms of scholarly communication is mirrored by changes in information storage and distribution - the subject of a recent scholarly investigation by UBC scholars (Duranti, Eastwood, and MacNeil, Preservation of the Integrity of Electronic Records) - and this year our host, the UBC Library, is itself facing momentous changes, as Main Library begins the process of renewal and transformation into the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre. The announcement of the new Learning Centre last October was followed by the visit of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, and it was entirely fitting that, as a souvenir of her visit to UBC, we should present Her Majesty with a copy of one of the books on display at this year's Authors' Reception, the splendid Encyclopedia of Literature in Canada edited by Bill New. This is only one of the many works we might have chosen from the current exhibition to represent the complexity, creativity, and innovativeness of the UBC community that year after year produces such an impressive contribution to knowledge. I want to extend my warmest congratulations to everyone represented in this exhibition: they bring honour to their university, and to their country. Martha C. Piper President UBCAuthors 8 Their Works his 13th annual reception honours 138 UBC authors who have created over 160 new works. These works encompass a wide variety of mediums including print books, electronic books, electronic exhibitions, CD-ROMs, music scores, and videos. This diversity in format is echoed in the diversity of subject matter with works published in the fields of medicine, science, applied science, art, humanities, and the social sciences. While this list is impressive in itself, it is important to realize that it is only a small fraction of the scholarly work produced by the UBC community. We have not included in this list articles in journals or chapters in books. The Library's extensive array of information resources in an increasingly wide variety of formats provided the foundation for the research of many of the authors who are being honoured. Thus the Authors' Reception provides an occasion to celebrate the role that the University Library, its collection and staff, play in supporting learning, research and scholarship. These works of UBCs authors enrich the quality and depth of the Library's collection, provide a basis for further study and research, and demonstrate that a first-class research library truly is the heart of the academic enterprise. The University Library is proud to play a role in recognizing and celebrating these authors who have contributed so much to the development of UBC as well as to the national and international community of scholars.
