UBC AUTHORS a THEIR BOOKS 1997 University of British Columbia Library and Office of the President Authors' Reception March 1998 UBC AUTHORS a THEIR BOOKS University of British Columbia Library and Office of the President Authors' Reception March 1998 UBCAuthors & Their Books Eighth Annual Authors' Reception reat universities are distinguished by their discovery, preservation, and sharing of knowledge. The focal point for these pursuits in any university is its library, and it is no exaggeration to say that all great universities are marked by their possession of great libraries. UBC is fortunate to possess an excellent library, one that stands as a resource for the entire province. We can also boast an active and productive faculty, whose many publications this past year have made a significant addition to our library collections. At this Eighth Annual Authors' Reception, we celebrate the scholarly achievements of colleagues in an impressive range of disciplines, from medicine and artificial intelligence to forest ecology, poetry, and art history. The work represented here has helped to strengthen UBC's reputation of excellence in research and critical inquiry. On behalf of all members of the University, I extend our heartiest congratulations to the UBC authors of 1997. Martha C. Piper President UBCAuthors & Their Books The University Library is very pleased to join President Martha Piper in sponsoring the Eighth Annual Authors' Reception which recognizes UBC authors and their books. At this occasion, we especially honour the authors of the more than 100 works published during the past year. Not only do these form an impressive contribution to scholarship and to the world's accumulated wisdom, but they will enrich the quality and depth of the Library's collection, providing a basis for further study and research. The Authors' Reception also provides an opportunity to highlight the role the University Library plays in supporting research and scholarship. For many of the authors, the Library's extensive collections and information resources provided the foundation for their research and made a significant contribution to the publication of their endeavours. This continuing synergy between UBCs authors and a first-rate research Library is essential to the University's mission.
