UBC AUTHORS a THEIR BOOKS 1996 University of British Columbia Library and Office of the President Authors' Reception March 1997 UBC AUTHORS a THEIR BOOKS University of British Columbia Library AND Office of the President Authors' Reception March 1997 UBCAuthors 8 Their Books Seventh Annual Authors' Reception reation of knowledge is one half of the essence of any great university. Imparting that knowledge is the other half. The works of UBC authors over the past year represent achievement in both respects. The authors' research and analysis has generated new knowledge; their organization of ideas and information into published form makes the knowledge available. Each work should be regarded and celebrated in its own right. Each author should be recognized for advancing the body of knowledge in a given discipline. Yet we can also celebrate the impressive sum of these publications, the breadth of knowledge and diversity of subjects they encompass. They will add to the excellent quality of the UBC library collection. This is particularly significant with the opening of the magnificent new Walter C. Koerner Library. Congratulations to the 1996 authors. David W. Strangway President UBCAuthors B Their Books he Library is pleased to co-sponsor with President Strangway the Seventh Annual Reception to honour UBC authors and their books. The Reception is a special occasion where we celebrate the richness of our Library and also, in many instances, our faculties' use of our extensive collections to produce new books for the Library. This year we acknowledge more than 100 authors who have published over 100 titles. As in previous years, these authors have written on a wide range of subjects and their expertise is impressive. The quality of a University is very much a result of the wide ranging network of scholarly and professional contacts that faculty members develop and maintain throughout their careers, and a world-class Library is an essential component of the scholarly endeavor.
