The Miner was established by John Houston, an outspoken journalist who would later embark on a successful political career, which included four terms as the mayor of Nelson and two terms in the provincial legislature. After leaving the Miner in the summer of 1892, Houston established the Tribune to compete with his former paper. The Miner was published by The Miner Printing and Publishing Company, and the paper's longest-serving editor was D. J. Beaton. The Miner was published under two variant titles, the Nelson Weekly Miner and the Weekly Miner. In 1902, the paper was sold to F. J.
