"The most significant play of the last 200 years," is the
praise accorded "The Playboy" by George Moore. Long
known as the centrepiece and popular favorite of the world-
famous Abbey Players, it is also a great literary masterpiece which has won approval from most exacting critics.
The Playboy himself is a fascinating braggart, hero and
lover, who fashions a lie and lives it; and Pegeen Mike
who succumbs to his charm combines a passionate intensity with a naive simplicity. Their love scene the late Lord
Asquith called "the most beautiful in all literature."
Of universal appeal, "The Playboy of the Western World"
is famous for the lyric beauty of its language, the entrancing humanity of its characters, the artistic, swift alternation
of comic and tragic which make it a drama of subtle power
and unequalled charm.
