MRS. J. B. CLEARIHUE HIS YEAR marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of
the founding of the Players' Club of the University
of British Columbia, an organization as old as the
University itself. As a fitting climax to these
twenty-five years of steady achievement, the Club
has chosen as its spring play for 1940 Helen Jerome's
dramatization of the Jane Austen classic, "Pride and
Prejudice."
fc*
This is the version of the novel which was first
produced in New York in the autumn of 1935 and then
continued to enchant that blase town for an entire year.
Four months after its American premiere "Pride and
Prejudice" was produced in London with an even
greater success. This success is perhaps answer enough
for those who would question the advisability of dramatising such a well-known work as "Pride and Prejudice," There is no doubt that Miss Jerome has made
of it a skilled piece of dramaturgy done with respect
for the original and thus earning the approval of even
che mosr ardent admirers of Jane Austen.
As a play it has practically everything for which
any audience could ask:—quality, of course, of the
first-rank in its writing, amusing and delightful char- a
acters, rapier-like wit combined with romantic comedy, ;;
abundant pictorial interest in the many charming costumes and varied settings, giving altogether an atmos- !!
phere of elegance and charm as exemplified by the airs jj
and graces of the Regency period.

vX HE PLAYERS' CLUB is the oldest club at the University
—^ and has always claimed to be the foremost. It has done
^_J much to bring amateur dramatics in British Columbia to
their present honoured position.
Just six weeks after the University came into existence, in the
autumn of 1915, at the old "shacks" in Fairview, a little group of
students, aided and encouraged by Professor F. G. C. Wood of the
English Department, undertook to form a Dramatic Society. Begun
with much temerity, with very little knowledge on the part of the
students of practical play production, but with boundless hope, the
University Players' Club, as it was then named, did not aim to lead
to the professional stage. It desired,, rather, to encourage the
appreciation and intelligent reading of drama, and freedom, confidence and graceful action in the presence of a company of people.
Despite this lack of professional ambition . . . for since its inauguration the society has done its work for the fun and love of it . . .
the Club has made an appreciable contribution, not only to community
drama, notably in the case of the Little Theatre, but also to the
legitimate stage. Many who first learned about the stage in Players'
Club ranks, later as teachers aided in the production of plays in many
parts of the province.
The first play chosen, and produced in February of 1916, was Jerome K. Jerome's "Fanny and the Servant Problem". Miss Jessie Tod-
hunter, first leading lady in this production, will be remembered by
many for her susequent theatrical successes on Broadway.
The Club has since that time offered performances of many interesting plays — comedies and tragedies —- by a variety of authors.
English drama has been represented by such standard playwrights as
Oliver Goldsmith, Oscar Wilde, Sir James Barrie, Sir Arthur W.
PinerOj G. B. Shaw, A,,A. Milne, and J. M. Synge. Among continental dramatists whose works have been selected are Hendrik Ibsen,
Jose Echegay, and Martinez Sierra.
The Annual Spring Tour establishes contact with outlying parts of
British Columbia, and provides wonderful training for actors. Twenty-
seven communities in B. C. have been visited during Players' Club
history. This year the Club plans to extend the route, if possible.
Apart from its purely dramatic efforts, the Club has endeavoured
to interest the province as a whole in the possibilities of its University
by promoting a more intelligent understanding of its hopes and of
its aims, by clearing up existing misunderstandings due to lack of
information, and by coming into personal contact with prospective
university students.
Financially, too, this organization has more than justified its existence, for its records show that during the last war over $6,000 was
raised for the University Red Cross, the Western University Battalion,
the Shaughnessy Military Hospital, and other war-time purposes.
Besides this, the Club raised $1,500 for a University war memorial,
$4,100 for stage equipment, and $200 for Green Room furnishings.
The Vancouver General Hospital and the Jubilee Hospital, Victoria, have received large sums, through Players' Club efforts, and all tour
profits, beyond guaranteed expenses, have been turned over to local
sponsors for charity work.
The Club encourages student playwrights by a $50.00 prize and
production of the winning One Act-play- Mr. Sydney Risk, director
of the current play, won^this"*award in 1931, and his play "Fog" was
subsequently given a world broadcast by the B. B. C.
The Players' Club has also developed many distinguished actors
and actresses. Miss Jessie Todhunter has already been mentioned;
Miss Dorothy Adams played in repertory, and Mr. Garrett Livingstone at Hollywood; others are well-known for their accomplishments
in the Little Theatre and Players' Club Alumni. In the Regional
Drama Festivals, too, there have been many former Players' Club
actors listed among the competing casts.
As early as 1921, Mr. J. Butterfield wrote in "The Province": "The
U.B.C. Players' Club has succeeded in the face of the greatest difficulties in bringing its annual performance to a pitch of perfection
that I have never seen equalled by amateurs in a very wide experience
of the drama." For this the credit belongs chiefly to the directors:
Mr. Wood, 1915 to 1931 (excepting 1929); Mrs. W. A. Ferguson,
193*9; Miss Dorothy Somerset, 1934 to 1938; Mr. Sydney Risk, 1932
Oto|J933 and 1939 te* 1940. Thanks are also due to Mrs. D. A. Suttie,
gracious chaperone on fourteen tours, and to those who directed
Christmas plays.
Mr. Wood especially, by his personality and untiring efforts, in
spired in the members that high moral and club tradition which enabled them to carry on when in 1931 his retirement due to ill healt-h-
suddenly left them in the position of a ship without a rudder.
A professional director next took over the coaching duties so long
performed voluntarily by Mr. Wood, and the late Dr. F. C. Walker
became Honorary President. Dr. Walker realized that never again
would the Club find anyone to work for it as Mr. Wood had done,
and he encouraged the student executive to take more responsibility,
at the same time helping them with his experience, and inspiring them
with his inimitable personality. Dr. Walker died suddenly in the
summer of 1934. The Players' Club echoes the words written about
him by' Dr. G. C. Sedgewick: "Not many people can be at once so
matter-of-fact and so sensitively thoughtful, so individual in nature
and at the same time so strictly loyal to fellowship and duty."
Under Dr. Walker the club made an increased effort to put the
University in its proper position as a leader towards the best in drama.
The ultra-modern staging of "Caesar and Cleopatra" was for the first
time built entirely by students under the direction of Tommy Lea.
Since then all sets have been designed and built by students, and the
stage crew has become an integral part of the club.
In recent years the club has been indebted first to Professor Thor-
leif Larsen and then to Professor Walter Gage for much valuable
assistance in the role of Honorary President.
With the celebration this year of its twenty-fifth anniversary, the
Players' Club hopes, by is presentation of "Pride & Prejudice", to add
another to its long list of successful productions. te k..s laijc
