THE FREDERIC WOOD THEATRE - NOVEMBER 24 - DECEMBER 9 A NOTE ABOUT THE PLAY
"Fable for Frauds" Is based on Niccolo Macchiavelli's famous comedy of the Italian Renaissance, "La Mandragola" (The
Mandrake). The adaptation is a free one, however. The author has not only "modernized" Macchiavelli's characters, but he
has also lightened the tone of the original by inserting songs and generally farcicalizing the material, "Foble for Frauds"
remains, however, very much in the tradition of satirical farce, which from Aristophanes on has always aimed ot poking fun
at serious subjects in an unserious manner. In such comedy, the audience is expected to consider the spirit of farce more
than the letter of satire.
