r
Sebastian, and his twin sister, Viola, have been shipwrecked
off the coast of Illyria. Each believes that the other is drowned, and
Viola, in her grief, disguises herself as a man and enters the service
of a romantic duke, Orsino. Under the name of Cesario she is employed as a messenger of love to the beautiful Lady Olivia. Olivia
falls in love with Viola {Cesario) who has herself fallen in love with
the Duke.
In Olivia's household are her steward, Malvolio, her gentlewoman, Maria, her clown, Feste, a servant, Fabian, and her uncle,
Sir Toby Belch. Sir Toby is accompanied by his personal foil, Sir
Andrew Aguecheek, who has been persuaded to pay suit to Olivia.
The other members of the household form a mischievous plot against
Malvolio in order to ridicule him before Olivia; and at the same
time promote a duel between the cowardly Sir Andrew and the
timorous Viola (Cesario).
Antonio, a sea captain who saved Sebastian, becomes involved
when he defends Viola (whom he takes for Sebastian) from Sii
Andrew. Malvolio is imprisoned because of his ridiculous actions.
(Brought on by the plotters.)
Olivia encounters Sebastian, and thinking he is Cesario, offers
to marry him. Sebastian quite readily accepts the offer, and after
some humourous confusion,, -the whole affair is pleasantly settled. . £
