Several changes have been made
in the Handbook this year with
a view to simplifying it for
reading. Several new clubs have
been included and non-existent
clubs removed. All matter hae
been considerably condensed.
All activities need the participation of new students and
freshmen are urged not to be
diffident about joining the club
in which they are interested.
At this time, when The University of
British Columbia extends a welcome alike
to returning students and to newcomers,
it is well to remember that the very nature of true university life prevents such
a welcome from being a mere reiterated
formula, recited mechanically and officially
to a group of persons considered only in
the mass. That is what the University's
welcome would be were the aim of
higher education to standardize students'
opinions or to impress upon the mind of
every student a rigid discipline of facts
and  dogmas.
The essence, however, of university education is the recognition and the development of personality: at amy university
worthy of the name, the purpose of each
course of study, however technical, however specialized, must be not only to provide a standard professional equipment of
knowledge and skill, but in even greater
degree to call forth into activity the limitless potentialities of the individual. The
ideal implicit in university culture is that
the individual can best serve and best
repay his fellows by developing his characteristic powers and perceptions, and
that the truest discipline is that imposed
by thoughtful self-respect and self-control.
Therefore it is as individuals that the
University receives all its students new
and old, with a welcome which it is my
privilege to express.

President, Alma Mater Society
To the class of '40 I extend on behalf
of the Students' Council a hearty welcome,
and the wish that your undergraduate
years at our University will bring happy
days and much knowledge.
It is to extra-curricular activity that the
Alma Mater Society, of which you are
now a member, in the main devotes itself. The first essential, the ma)or purpose
of University life however, is academic
study. No extra - curricular activity — regardless of how important or attractive it
may seem — warrants a student devoting
to it his time at the expense of study.
Undergraduate wisdom consists of exercising a knowledge of values, of proportioning wisely between extra-curricular activity and academic work. Mere attendance
at this University, without real contact
with one's fellow students, is like bread
without leaven; it is flat failure. The taking
of an active part in the sport and club life
of your Alma Mater Society is the leaven
necessary to a happy and useful undergraduate career— it fills it out. It is wise
to remember, however, that too much leavening spoils the loaf.
The welfare of this society, in essence
yours because it is really a tremendous
club embracing all our students, depends
on your devotion and loyalty. The Society
has prospered and thrived for more than
twenty years, ai)d through the ranks of
its membership have passed many thousands: it is now your turn to carry on.
In 1S90 the Provincial Legislature
passed an Act establishing a body
politic and corporate named "The University of British Columbia". No
material pi ogress was made, however,
until 1894, when an Act was passed
which permitted the affiliation of
high schools in the Province with
recognized  Canadian  Universities.
In 1899 Vancouver High School was
affiliated with McGill University in
order to provide first year work in
Arts, and took the name of Vancouver
College. First year work in Arts was
offered by Victoria High School when
it became Victoria College by affiliating with McGill University in 1902.
In the same year Vancouver College
undertook the second year in Arts.
In 1906 an Act was passed incorporating the Royal Institution for the
Advancement of Learning of British
Columbia, which in the same year
established at Vancouver the McGill
University College of Vancouver and
Victoria College which was part of it
ceased to exist.
Definite steps to establish the University were taken by Dr. H. E.
Young, Minister of Education, in 1907, 12
when he introduced a "University Endowment Act." This Act was followed in 1908 by an Act establishing and
incorporating the University of British Columbia and repealing the old
Act of 1890-91. This Act with its
subsequent admendments, determines
the present constitution of the University.
A site commission, appointed in
1910, recommended the vicinity of
Vancouver and in the following year
the Point Grey site was granted to
the University. The grant now consists of 548 acres at the extremity of
Point Grey. The waters of the Gulf
of Georgia form more than half the
boundary of the University campus.
A tract of some 3,000 acres of Government land immediately adjoining the
site and lying between it and the City
of Vancouver has been set aside by
the Government in order that University revenue may be provided by
sale or lease.
The first Convocation, held on August 1st, 1912, chose Mr. F. L. Carter-
Cotton as first chancellor of the University. In March, 1913, the Lieuten-
ant-Governor-in-Council appointed as
President of the University, F. F.
Wesbrook, M.A., M.D., CM., LLD. On
April 4th, 1918, Dr. R. E. McKechnie,
the  present  chancellor,  was  elected.
On the death of President Westbrook October 20th, 1918, L. S. Klink,
Dean of the faculty of Agriculture,
was appointed Acting President, and
on June 1st, 1919, President.
From its opening in 1915 till the
summer of 1925, the University
carried on its work in temporary
quarters on part of the site of the
General Hospital in Fairview.
Construction work was commenced
on the Science Building at the Point
Grey site in 1914, but was interrupted
because of war conditions. Work on
this building was resumed in 1923,
shortly after the great Student Campaign. The Science Building and the
Library, as well as nine other build- '
ings, were completed and ready for
occupancy in the fall of 1925.
The inauguration of the new buildings was held on October 15th and
16th, 1925, on which occasion honorary degrees were granted by the University for the first time.
The gymnasium was completed in
1929 and presented to the University
by the Alma Mater Society.
In 1931, due to the efforts of the
students, largely in their "Stadium
Campaign," an excellent playing field
was constructed on the campus and
it is hoped that suitable seating accomodation will be provided in the

Hours —Monday to Friday, 8:45 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m., Saturday 8:45 a.m. to
1:00 p m. These hours are subject to
change. Watch Library Notice Board.
Circulation Department — The General circulation desk is located at the
north end of the centre desk. All
books taken from the library must be
charged here. The time limit is one
week but they may be renewed if not
in demand. A fine of five cents per
overdue day is charged.
The Reserve Desk is located at the
south end of the centre desk. The
time limit for these books is two
hours and they must not leave the
building before closing time. Books
may be taken out over night from
9:00 p. m. to 8:45 a. m. Overdue fines
of twenty cents an hour are charged.
Unpaid fines are charged against
the student's caution money.
Reference Department—General information and assistance regarding
essay topics, reading lists, etc. may
be obtained at the reference desk in
the north eastern corner of the
Catalogues — The generaj catalogue
is located in the north-east room.
Here are listed all the books in the
library  by  author,  title  and  subject.
The reserve catalogue faces the
loan desk. Books are listed by course
and author. International Relations
Club books are listed here separately.
Call slips, both general and reserve
MUST be written for all books requested at the loan desk.
Books which do not circulate are:
Reference books, Periodicals (bound
and unbound), Government documents, Society publications and Rare
The stacks are closed to the general student body.
Special concessions are made to
graduates, honour students and senior
pass students.
Freshmen will get their insignia at

The Senate of The University of
British Columbia, under the powers
conferred by the British Columbia
University Act and amending Acta,
enacts as follows:—
WHEREAS students of one
year's standing in the University
have been wont heretofore to initiate new students by the practice
commonly called "hazing", at times
injurious, and students generally
have indulged in inter - faculty
clashes and other activities which
had a tendency to cause injury
to property and persons:
AND WHEREAS it is desirable
to prohibit all such practices and
to preserve order and good government within the authority of the
University and the precincts of
the Campus;
AND ENACTED as follows:—
1. All forms of initiation or clash of
students which in any way are or
tend to become injurious to any
person or property, committed by
any student anywhere or by any
person upon property under the
control of the University, are
hereby absolutely prohibited.
An information bureau for the purpose
of advising in-coming students on proposed courses and extra-curricular activities may be found in the Administration
Building from one week before opening
of the University (September 23) till three
days after. The personnel of this bureau
consists of eight members of the Alma
Mater Society, preferably seniors; the Junior Member; the President of the W. U.
S.; President of M. A. A.; President of
A.M. U.S.; President of S. M. U. S.; and
President of Ag. M. U. S. and two members to be appointed by CouncU.
Freshmen are requested to apply to this
bureau for advice during the specified
time although certain members will be on
call for a week after the opening of the
The W. U. S. will also have an information bureau, composed of the executive
and committees, in the lower hall of the
Arts Building during first few days of
the term.
The Student's Council Office, 303
Auditorium, is the office of the Lost
and  Found  Bureau. UNIVERSITY OF B.  C.
Notice Boards are placed in every
University building and in the space
between the Arts and Auditorium
Buildings (the Quad.). Students are
at liberty to use them. Some boards
are reserved for the use of clubs.
The official Students' Council Notice
Board is on the South stairway in
the   Auditorium  Building.
Mail is received twice daily on the
campus. General student letter racks
are situated in the lower hall of the
Arts Building. The letter rack for
clubs and societies is at the head of
the south stairway in the Auditorium
Building. The official address is "The
University of British Columbia, West
Point Grey, B.  C."
The "Ubyssey," published on Tuesdays and Fridays is distributed in
the halls of the Arts and Applied
Science Buildings.
Pay phones are installed in all University Buildings. The toll is five
cents to  the  city  exchange.
Information regarding scholarships,
medals and prizes may be found in
the  calendar.
The Book Store which occupies a
room in the Auditorium Building is
prepared to supply all the text books
required for the various courses offered in the University, also fountain
pens, note books, loose-leaf refills,
drawing paper and instruments. The
book store is open from 9 to 5 on
week days and 9 to 1 on Saturdays.
The National Federation of Canadian University Students has arranged a scheme whereby a Canadian
University Student, without extra
charge to himself, may obtain a years
study at a university in another part
of Canada.
A selection committee composed of
a member of faculty and two students
shall nominate, on application, any
number of students not exceeding one
per cent, of the enrolment. The student desiring to take advantage of
the scheme must have completed at
least two years of study, with at
least   second   Class   standing   in   the 20
second year, be an undergraduate below the final year, and be representative in a general way of the student
Through the co-operation of various university authorities it is provided that exchange students are exempt from tuition fees which except
in extreme cases is more than sufficient compensation for the railway
fee involved in effecting the exchange.
The President of the Students'
Council is the representative of the
N. F. C. U. S. and can give full information respecting the Exchange
The bureau endeavours to provide
students with summer employment
and part time work during the winter session as well as helping students obtain employment after graduation. Those who know of vacant
positions are requested to notify the
bureau. All correspondence should be
addressed to "Employment Bureau,
Registrar's Office."
The Canadian Jubilee Memorial
Windows are situated at the western
end of the main concourse in the
Library. Presented to the University
by an unknown donor the windows
were unveiled on November 28, 1928,
by the Hon. S. F. Tolmie, Premier of
British Columbia.
Inside the main doorway of the
Science Building are two war memorials— one to commemorate the supreme sacrifices and willing services
of the members of the " 'D' Co'y. 196
Battalion, C.E.F., Western Universities, in the Great War, 1914-'18;" and
the other "in honor of the B. C. reinforcing platoon, 196th Western Universities Overseas Battalion, C. E. F."
The Sun Dial, with its oblong face
and engravings of the Cairn and the
Lions, is a familiar object to all visitors of the Botanical Gardens. It was
presented to the University in 1926
by B. S. Hartley (professor of Mathematics, retired 1931) who designed it
especially for the position in which
it now stands.
The Library of the University contains the most complete representor
tive Polynesian collection of curio
relics  in  the world. It was collected 22
by Dr. Frank Burnett, who during a
period of 35 years, sailed around the
cannibal islands in the South Pacific. Bill Tansley superintends this
The University Stamp Collection
comprises the postage stamps of Canada and the early British North
America colonies. It contains many
stamps dating from the time of
Queen Victoria until the present day.
This collection is not yet complete
and all new contributions will be welcomed. Those interested may have
access to the collection through the
The beautiful memorial Japanese
Lantern and Garden situated near
botanical gardens was presented by
the friends of Inazo Nitobe to the
University. On August 29, 1935 tho
University made formal acceptance of
this memorial to a great student and
an  apostle   of   international  goodwill.
The Totem Poles, now situated in
the Botanical Gardens were presented in 1927 by the Alumni Association. They are from the Musquiam
Reserve, Point Grey a,nd are the last
two of the tribe. The Pole on the
right is the Capilano Pole, a carving
of the famous Capilano Chief; on the
left is the Tsem-Lano Pole, symbolic
of the magical powers of Tsem-Lano,
a great Musquiam warrior.
A series of paintings by John Innes
which hang in the Library, represent
early scenes in the history of British
The Geology Museum is located in
the southern wing of the Applied Science Building. It contains valuable
and interesting material illustrative
of both physical and historical geology and new additions are constantly being made.
The Cairn was first set up as a
memorial of the province wide campaign in 1922, when a group of enthusiastic students marched from
Fairview to Point Grey in an endeavour to have the university site
moved from the Fairview shacks.
The Cairn service for Freshmen
which was inaugerated in 1928 has become a tradition at the University.
Through the efforts of Mr. John
Ridington, University Librarian, an
extensive art collection composed of
185 volumes, 200 reproductions and 40
large pictures specially framed were
donated to the University by the Carnegie Corporaion in New York. This
collection has been installed in the
Art Room of the library. UNIVERSITY OF  B.  C
This bureau operates to exchange
second-hand books between students
in the most convenient manner possible. It operates under the supervision
of council who appoints its manager.
The office of the exchange is located
in the basement of the Arts Building,
South west corner of the quad.
Applications for the position of
manager and assistant manager for
the book exchange will be received
by council. These positions will be
given to those for whom the remuneration will be the greatest value.
Books are only accepted for resale
on the following terms and on the understanding that the depositing ol
books by the student constitutes an
acceptance by him of those terms:
1. The Book Exchange will be open
for a period of three weeks at the beginning of each term for receiving
books. Dates to appear on notice
board and in the Ubyssey.
2. A Receipt will be given for all
books received, but no guarantee is
made that all books can be disposed
Care should be taken that this receipt is not lost.
3. The Receipt Number will be
placed in the front page of each book
and the students' name listed alphabetically in Index book provided—Receipt Number to be shown against this
4. At the end of advertised three
weeks, Cash Vouchers will be made
out for all books sold to date showing
amount received for each book. A deduction of ten per cent, within the
nearest five cents will be made for
the service of the Book Exchange.
Students may obtain these cash vouchers from the Book Exchange on presentation of the receipt, on a day to be
specified by notices on notice boards
and in the Ubyssey.
5. Cash Vouchers will be cashed on
presentation at the General Office of
the Alma Mater Society. Care should
be taken that these Cash Vouchers
are not lost as duplicates cannot be

term can be left with the Book Exchange for sale during the spring
7. The Book Exchange will close
for the year on May fifteenth. All
books not sold must be reclaimed by 26
that date, also all cash vouchers must
have been cashed by then, it being
fully understood by the depositor at
the time of depositing, that all books
and money unclaimed by May fifteenth
shall become the property of the Alma
Mater Society.

The University Health Service, located in 306 Auditorium Building, is
for the prevention of communicable
diseases to render first aid and to
furnish  advice about  health matters.
All students entering the University for the first time must present
medical certificates in the form prescribed  by  the  University.  This  form UNIVERSITY OF  B.  C.
may be obtained from the Registrar's
office or the Health office. These
students must have medical examinations at the beginning of the term.
Make appointments at the Health
All cases of illness, including a.
common cold, developed during the
academic year must be reported to
the Health office; if on the campus,
personally, or otherwise by phone.
After an illness students must report
to the Health Office before readmis-
sion   to   the   University.
Students exposed to any infectious
disease must immediately report to
the Health Officer under Section 83
of  the  "Public  Health  Act."
AU persons reasonably suspected of
infectiveness are excluded from contact with others until shown to be
non-infective or if shown to be infective until the actual termination of;
such infectiveness.
All university contacts of infective*
are to report to the Health Office fori
determination of susceptibility, and;
are to be excluded while there as a
possibility of developing the infection]
In order to minimize loss of attendance, contacts may arrange daily
inspection at the Health office during the period of potential infectiveness. Failure to report will result in
immediate expulsion from the University.
The University Authorities, the Alma Mater Society, or any subsidiary
club or organization do not assume
any responsibility for the payment of
damages, doctor's bills, or hospital expenses resulting from injuries to players or participants in athletics. Any
compensation shall be deemed to be
a voluntary contribution at sole discretion of Students' Council.
All applicants for this voluntary
contribution must fill out an Accident
Report Form immediately, in order to
receive a hearing of their request.
These forms may be obtained from
the University Health Service Department, Aud. 306, the office of the Business Secretary, Aud. 303, or from doctors selected by Council. Further,
the applicants must be attended by
those  doctors  selected  by  Council.
Freshette Supper — During the initiation   period   freshettes   are   enter- 30
tained at a supper. This function generally takes the form of a children's
party to which the freshettes are escorted by their "big sisters."
Frosh Smoker — An evening with
pipes, tobacco, cider and masculine
entertainment welcomes the Freshmen during the initiation period.
Frosh Reception — A dance is given
about the end of the second week in
the fall term in honor of the incoming students. The freshmen are expected to mingle with members of
the upper classes. Introductions are
not necessary. One ticket only is
allowed ea/ch undergraduate. During
the evening the freshmen are formally received as members of the
student body and until this ceremony
the green insignia must be worn.
Home-coming — The Annual Homecoming week-end is celebrated early
in November. It is intended to bring
the Alumni in closer contact with
the students and includes various entertainments in honor of the graduates.
Christmas and Spring Plays — Late
in the fall term the Player's Club
presents four plays (including the
student  prize  play)   in   the   Auditor
ium, for students only. Admission is
free. Late in the Spring term the club
also presents a Spring Play which is
open to the public, and for which admission is charged.
Hi-Jinx — .During February the
Women's Undergraduate Society arranges a fancy dress party for women
students only. A small admission fee
is charged. Any male student attending this dance in disguise does so at
the  risk  of his   personal  safety.
Class Parties — Each class of each
faculty is allowed to hold one class
party during the year. Only members
of the class holding the dance are
admitted. Class fees pay for these
Undergraduate Balls — Each faculty
is allowed to give one general dance
during the year. Of late the supply
of tickets for these balls has been
Musical Society Concert — Each
Spring the Musical Society gives a
concert in the Auditorium to which
the public is invited. Several light
operas have been staged. An admission  fee  is  charged.
Co-ed Ball —During the latter part
of February the W. U. S. sponsors a
sports dance to which the women
students escort the men. U?> IVERSITY OF  B.  C.
Fraternities and sororities are
groups of students with common
ideals and a liking for one another,
organized into secret societies of from
fifteen to forty members. "Rushing,"
the system whereby these organizations contact prospective members, is
carried on according to rules agreed
to by all the fraternities. It consists of
members contacting 'rushees' through
social affairs in order to become acquainted with him. At the end of the
rushing season if the fraternity decides it wants the person as a member one of its members gives him a
'bid' or invitation to join.
From the prospects point of view
the rushing season is an opportunity
to form an impartial opinion of the
various fraternities. It is extremely
important to him if he joins a fraternity at all to join one whose members he really esteems as individuals,
and whose ideals are similar to his
own. Otherwise fraternity life will be
a total failure. The prospect often
finds it very difficult to make up his
mind, particularly if a number of fraternities are rushing him. If he is
not very enthusiastic about the ones
that are rushing him he will be much
wiser to refuse their bids as a more
desirable   one   may   rush   him   later.
Some students are bid as late as
their fourth year.
The rushee should thoroughly investigate the fraternity question before joining. Information regarding
financial obligations involved may be
obtained from any member of the
fraternity rushing him.
Whether he joins a fraternity or
not he should always remember that
he owes first loyalty to his university
and its activities.

The Student's Council is the governing body, its nine members being
elected late in the spring term. This
body meets every Monday night
during the term to discuss all motions
for student welfare. The presidents
of the Men's and Women's Undergraduate Societies, the presidents of
the Men's and Women's Athletic Associations and the president of the
Literary and Scientific Executive represent definite bodies of student opinion. A Junior Member is elected to
direct the affairs of the freshman
class during the first term. These
members bring up matters relative
to their own subsidiaries but are expected to know and discuss matters
outside  their own spheres.
Each of the subsidiary clubs submits a budget to Council early in the
fall term. Budgets are then alloted
by the council which may make additional special grants at its own discretion. UNIVERSITY OF B.  C.
Each club has its own executive

1. The name of the Society is the
"Alma Mater Society of the University
of   British   Columbia."
2    The objects of the  Society are:
(a) To promote, direct and control
all student activities within the Univer-
sity of British Columbia as represented
in the following associations and societies and  their subsidiary organizations:
i.   The Undergraduate  Societies,
ii.  The Literary and Scientific Executive,
iii. The  Athletic  Associations,
iv. The   Students'   Publications   Board.
(b) To advance the cause of higher learning in the Province of British
(c) To promote unity and good
will   amongst   its   members;
(d)) To acquire by gift, bequest,
lease, exchange or purchase any lands,
buildings or hereditaments, whether freehold or leasehold, for the use of the Society;
(e) To erect on such lands any
buildings or improvements necessary for
the proper use and occupation of the
same by the Society;
(f) To take or otherwise acquire
and hold shares or stock debentures, debenture stock, bonds, obligations and securities issued by any benevolent or
charitable Society or Company within
the Province of British Columbia or elsewhere;
(g) Subject to the provisions contained in Clause 10 of the Societies Act to
borrow, raise and secure the payment of 42
money In such manner as the Society
sees fit, and in particular by the issue
of debentures;
3. The operations of the Society are
to be chiefly carried on at the University of British Columbia, University Section, Point Grey, Province of British
Code   passed   by  A.M.S.,   April  4,   19S4,
and filed with Registrar ot Cos. May 1,
By-Law No. 1
The Alma Mater Society of the University of British Columbia (hereinafter
referred to as "the Society") shall be
composed of active members and honorary members.
1. "Active  Members"   shall comprise:
(i)   all    registered    undergraduate
students   of  the   University  of
British Columbia;
(11) all  students  of  affiliated  colleges;
(Hi) all graduates and partial students;
who have paid the fees of the Society for
the current University Session.  An undergraduate  student  shall  mean  a  student who has not received a degree from
this   University,   taking   a   regular   full
course in any faculty, or taking a course
partly  In   one  year  and  partly  in  another year In any faculty or faculties and
a   graduate   student   doing  work  for  a
double degree.
2. "Honorary Members" shall comprise all graduates of the University,
members of the Faculty, and others upon
whom honorary membership may, from
time to time, be conferred.
By-Law No. 2
The Society shall hold two regular general meetings each year, one of which
shall be held within the first fifteen
days of the fall term, and shall be known
as the "Semi-annual Meeting", and the
other during the last week in March In
each year, which shall be known as the
"Annual Meeting".
1. At the said Semi-annual Meeting
the Treasurer shall present a financial
statement for the preceding year ending
June 30th, duly certified by the auditors,
and the Secretary shall outline the policy of the Society for the coming year. At
the Semi-annual Meeting any business
arising out of the activities of the Society may be discussed.
2. At the Annual Meeting the Treasurer shall make a financial report of
cash receipts and disbursements to the
15th day of March of the Calendar year
In which the meeting Is held; the auditors shall be appointed; and the Secretary shall make a report upon the activities for the year.
3. Special General Meetings of the Society may be convened at any time by
the President upon resolution of the Students' Council, or upon a request In
writing, duly signed by one hundred active members of the Society In good
standing. No business shall be transacted at any Special Meeting except that
for which the meeting has been convened.
4. Active members only shall be entitled to vote at meetings of the Society
and each active member in good standing shall be entitled to one vote only.
Honorary members may take part in
discussions, but shall not be entitled to
vote. Voting by proxy at any meeting of
the Society shall not be allowed. 44
5. Thirty-three and one-third per cent
of the active members for the current
session, present in person, shall constitute a quorum at any meeting of the

Not less than 24 hours notice of a special
general meeting, specifying the place, the
day, and the hour of the meeting and the
general nature of the business to be
transacted at the meeting, shall be given by posting the same upon the students' notice board at the University of
British Columbia, and such notice shall
be signed by the secretary, provided always that the Students' Council may by
resolution provide, from time to time,
such other manner of giving notice as it
may deem good and sufficient
By-Law No. 3
1. The name of the executive of the
Society shall be "Students' Council", and
the members of the Students' Council,
for the time being, shall be the Directors
of the Society.
2. The members of the Students'
Council shall be elected annually In the
manner provided In the regulations of
the Society.
3. The duties and powers of the mem-
oers of the Students' Council shall be as
provided in the regulations of the Society.
4. The officers of the Society shall be:
(a) Honorary President,
(b) Honorary   Vice-President,
(c) President,
(d) Vice-President,
(e) Secretary,
(f) Treasurer,
together with such other officers as the
Society in General Meeting may by reso-
lution determine. The duties of the active officers shall be as follows:
i. The President shall preside at all
meetings of the Society and of the
Students' Council. He shall be
an ex-officio member of all committees of the Society and the
Student's Council, and shall carry
out all such other duties as usually fall to the office of a president of a society;
Ii. The Vice-President shall assume
and carry out the duties of the
President during his absence;
iii. The Secretary shall prepare and
keep minutes of the meetings of
the Society and of Students'
Council, and shall be responsible
for conducting all correspondence
of the Students' Council and the
Society, and shall have such further duties as may, from time to
time, be prescribed by the regulations of the Society or by resolution of the Students' Council;
lv. The Treasurer shall take charge
of and be responsible for the
funds of the Society, and shall
carry out all such other duties
as usually fall to the office of
treasurer, or as may be prescribed, from time to time, by
the regulations of the Society
or by resolution of the Students'
By-Law No. 4
Subject to the provisions contained in
Clause 10 of the Societies Act, the Students' Council may, for the purpose of
carrying out the objects of the Society,
borrow, raise or secure the repayment of
such sum or sums of money in such manner and upon such terms and conditions 46
in all respects as the Students' Council
may by resolution prescribe, and in particular by the issue of bonds, perpetual
or redeemable debentures, or any mortgage, charge or other security on the
whole or any part of the property or assets of the Society, both present and future, including all fees or membership
dues now or hereafter due or payable.
By-Law No. S
1. The auditors of the Society shall
be appointed by the Society at the Annual General Meeting and shall be paid
such remuneration as the Students' Council  shall  determine.
2. The auditors of the Society shall
have a right of access at all times to all
books and records of the Society and all
subsidiary societies, and shall be entitled to require from any and aU members or officers of the Society, or any
subsidiary society, such Information and
explanation as may be necessary for the
performance of the duties of the auditors.
3. The auditors shall make an annual report for the preceding session ending
June thirtieth to the members of the
Society on the accounts examined by
them and the report shall state:
(a) whether or not they have obtained all the Information and explanations they have required;
(b) whether in their opinion the
balance sheet referred to In the report
Is properly drawn up so as to exhibit a
true and correct view of the Society's
affairs according to the best of their information and explanations given to them
and as shown by the books of the Society.
By-Law No. 6
The seal of the Society shall not be affixed  to any  instrument except  by the
authority of a resolution of the Students'
Council or of the Society, and in the
presence of such officers of the Society
as may be prescribed in and by any such
resolution, or if no officers are prescribed
by the resolution, in the presence of the
President and the Secretary; and such officers shall sign every instrument to
which the seal of the Society is so affixed in their presence. The seal of the Society shall be kept in the custody of the
Secretary or such other person, firm or
corporation as the Students' Council may
from time to time, appoint.
By-Law No. 7
1. The By-Laws of the Society may
be amended only in accordance with Section 22, sub-section 2, of the "Societies
Act" of the Province of British Columbia.
The amendments may be initiated by the
Students' Council after an unanimous
vote or by any member of the Society,
provided that the proposed amendment
shall be submitted to the Secretary in
writing signed by not less than one hundred members of the Society entitled to
2. The manner In which an amendment or amendments to the Constitution takes place shall be as provided in
the regulations of the Society.
By-Law No. 8
Minutes of all meetings of the Society
and of the Students' Council shall be
prepared by the Secretary of the Society,
and of all meetings of subsidiary organizations of the Society and their executives by the respective secretaries of
such organizations, and all such minutes
shall be kept at the offices of the Society,
Auditorium Building, University of British Columbia, Point Grey. 48
By-Law No. 9
The books and records of the Society
may be inspected by members in good
standing at the offices of the Society,
University of British Columbia, Point
Grey, on any business day except Saturday, during the University term between
the hours of 10 a m. and 4.00 p. m.
By-Law No. 10
The Society shall have power to make
such regulations from time to time as it
may deem necessary or advisable concerning the activities of any of its subsidiary societies or any other student
society or organization, and to repeal,
vary, alter and amend the same from
time to time as it sees fit, in such manner as may be provided in any regulations made by the Society or by the Students' Council on its behalf.
By-Law No. 11
The Society shall have power to enact
by resolution a code consisting of Articles relative to the conduct of student
affairs, or any branch or part thereof,
and to alter, amend, vary, repeal or abrogate the same, from time to time, as it
may see fit in such manner as may be
provided by its regulations or by any
regulations made from time to time by
resolution of the Students' Council.

Article  I — Definitions
1. A "Freshman" shall be any student admitted to the first year in any

Article II — Officers
The officers  of the  Society shall be:

(d) The Vice-President who shall be
the President of the Women's Undergraduate Society. In the event of the President of the Alma Mater Society being a
woman, the Vice-President shall be the
President of the Men's Undergraduate
(e) The Secretary
(f) The Treasurer
Article m — Studeats' Council
1.   The name of the executive of the
Society shall be "the Students' Council", so
and the members of the Students' CouncU
for the time being shall be directors of
the Society.
2.   The    members    of    the    Students'
Council shall be:
(a) The Honorary President who
shall be the President of the Univerclty
of British Columbia.
(b) The Honorary Vice-President,
who shall be elected annually at a Joint
meeting of the incoming and outgoing
Students' Council.
(c) The President, who shall be an
undergraduate of a graduating class of
any Faculty and who has attended the
University of British Columbia tor at
least two years.
(d) The Secretary, who shall be an
undergraduate In any Faculty who has
acquired the standing of a Junior.
(e) The Treasurer, who shall be an
undergraduate who has acquired the
standing of a Junior and who Is not in
the graduating year of any Faculty.
(f) The President of Literary and
Scientific Executive, who shall be an
undergraduate of any Faculty who has
acquired the standing of a Junior.
(g) The President of the Men's Athletic Association who shall be an undergraduate of any Faculty who has acquired the standing of a Junior.
(h) The President of the Men's Undergraduate Society, who shall be an undergraduate member of the graduating
year of any Faculty.
(1) The President of the Women's
Athletic Association, who shall be an undergraduate of any Faculty who has acquired the standing of a Junior.
(J) The President of the Women's
Undergraduate Society, who shall be an
undergraduate of the graduating year of
any  Faculty.
(k) The Junior Member, who shall
have acquired the standing of a Junior
and shall not be in the graduating year
of any Faculty.
3.   The duties of the members of the
Students'  Council shall  be:
(a) The Honorary President and the
Honorary Vice-President shall act In an
advisory capacity and shall be mediums
of good will between the Society and the
general   public:
(b) The President shall preside at
all meetings of the Society and of the
Students' Council. He shall be an ex-
officio member of all committees of the
Society and shall undertake all such other
duties as usually fall to the office of a
president of a Society:
(c) The Secretary shall take the
minutes of all the meetings of the Students' Council and of the Society, and
shali conduct all correspondence of the
Students' Council and keep on file eopies
of ali letters written and received by the
Society or by the Secretary, which relate to the affairs of the Society. The
Secretary shall read the annual reports
of the subsidiary organizations at the
annual meeting of the Society and shall
keep the minute books and secretarial
records of the Society:
(d) The Treasurer on assuming office shall at the expense of the Society
provide a fidelity bond in the sum of
(2,000.00 in a company selected by the
Students' CouncU. The Treasurer shall
take charge of and be responsible for
the funds of the Society. He shall Immediately upon receipt of any funds deposit the same in a chartered bank selected   by   the   Students'   CouncU.     The 52
Treasurer shall not disburse any funds
except in payment of bills certified by
the Students' CouncU, and then only by
cheque, signed by the Treasurer and
countersigned by the President of the
Society, or by the two signing officers
appointed by the Students' Council. The
Treasurer shall keep careful account of
and be responsible for all moneys received and disbursed by him, and shall
file all bills, receipts and vouchers. He
shall render a statement of the finances
of the Society to the Students' CouncU
each month, and at any other time on
the written request of the Council. The
Treasurer shall obtain a financial report
of each activity or function within
14 days of the date of such activity
or function, and shall present it to
the Students' Council. The Treasurer shall prepare the budget of the Society from the estimates of the proposed expenditures of the Undergraduate
Societies, and Literary and Scientific Executive, the Athletic Associations and the
Student PubUcations Board, and present
it In the fourth week of the tall term to
the Students' CouncU for adoption. The
Treasurer shall also do such other work
as is usually done by a Treasurer of a

offices and shall be in charge of Homecoming activities and shall have such
other duties as are assigned to him by

(g) The President of the Men's Athletic Association shall be responsible to
the Students' Council for all men's athletic activities:
(h) The President of the Men's Undergraduate Society shall be responsible
for the men's initiation, discipUne, and
all undergraduate social functions not
under the control of the Women's Undergraduate Society:
(1) The President of the Women's
Athletic Association shall be responsible
to the Students' CouncU for all women's
athletic activities:
(j) The President of the Women's
Undergraduate Society shall be In charge
of all women's social activities, including
the women's Initiation, and shall act as
Vice-President of the Society and shall
take over and perform all the duties of
the President during his absence from or
inability to attend at any meeting.
4.   The  Students'  CouncU  shall:
(a) Act as the Board of Directors of
the  Society:
(b) Be the only recognized medium
between the Society and (i.) the University authorities,  (ii.) the general public:
(c) Have control of all affiliated
student activities, subject to the approval
of the Society and the Faculty Committee
on Student Affairs:
(d) Appoint two of its members to
sit with the President of the Society on
the Joint Committee on Student Affairs:
(e) Constitute itself a Court of Appeal from the decisions of the DiscipUne
Committee, and as such shall be empowered to ratify, confirm, amend, vary,
alter, rescind or annul in such manner
as it may see fit any decision of the
said   Committee: 54
(f) Meet regularly each week during the session and shall hold special
meetings as occasion may arise:
(g) Have power to engage and pay
such assistants as It may require or
deem necessary for the efficient carrying out of the work of the business office and of other activities of the Society:
(h) Within one week after the last
day of the spring term assume office at a
joint meeting with the retiring Students'
(1) Have fuU control of all activities
under the Society, and any rule made by
it in connection with any such activity
shall be considered as final and binding,
provided always that any such rule may
be annulled by the Faculty Committee
on Student Affairs, or by resolution ot
the Society.
5. The election of the members of the
Students' Council shall be conducted as
(a) The President shall be elected
on the second Tuesday In March. AU
other members shall be elected on the
third Tuesday In March;
(b) Nominations for all officers shall
be In the hands of the Secretary of the
Society by 5.00 p.m. on the Wednesday
preceding election day;
(c) Nomination shall be signed by
not less than ten active members In good
standing, and shall be delivered to the
Secretary of the Society within the time
aforesaid, and shall forthwith be posted
by him on the Students' CouncU bulletin
(d) No student shall sign the nomination list for more than one candidate
for each office;
(e) Active members only shall have-
the privilege of voting at these elections;
(f)   Voting   shall   be  by  ballot   and
the method shall be as foUows:
If the number of candidates nominated
for any office exceeds one, then the
names of all candidates shall be placed
on the ballot paper in alphabetical order.
Each voter shall write the number 1 upon
the ballot opposite the name of the candidate for whom he desires to vote, and
If he so desires the number 2 opposite
the candidate of his second choice, the
number 3 opposite the candidate of his
third choice and progressively untU all
the candidates whose names appear on
the Ust are allotted choices. Each candidate shall be credited with the number
of first choices marked opposite his
name. The candidate who receives more
than 50 per cent, of the total number of
first choices shail be declared elected.
If no candidate receives more than 50
per cent, of the total number of first
choices then the candidate with the
least number of first choices shall be
struck off the list and the second choices marked on his ballots shall be credited to the candidates for whom they are
cast. The candidates with the least number of first choices shail continue to be
struck off the list and the votes credited
to their names shail then be distributed
among the remaining candidates on the
list in the manner aforesaid until
(a) A candidate receives more than
50 per cent, of the votes cast, or
(b) Until two candidates remain on
the list, in which case the one with the
larger number of votes shail be declared
Where by reason of choices of voters
and by distribution of votes as aforesaid
a tie results between two or more candidates then the Election Committee
shall determine In such manner as it
deems fit which of and In  what order 56
such candidates shall be struck off the

the next choice on the ballot, then such
ballot shaU be counted in favour of the
candidate next subsequent in choice to

(g) No student shail hold more than
one office on the Students' Council during any one session;
(h) After the ballots have been
counted, the returning officer shail place
them in a package, which package shail
be sealed in the presence of the scrutineers and preserved by the Returning
Officer until after the annual meeting of
the  Society:
(1) PoUing booths shall be open
from 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on election
(j) AU elections shall be in charge
of the Election Committee which committee shall be appointed by the Students' CouncU, and the elections shall be
conducted to comply with the aforesaid
sections, and such further regulations
as the said committee shall make, from
time to time, and which are not inconsistent with the said aforesaid sections.
Article IV —Funds
1.   The funds of the Society shaU consist of the foUowing:
(a) The annual membership fee
which shail be payable not later than the
last day for payment of the fall term
University fees, and which shall be collected by the Bursar of the University
under the authority of the Board of Governors, and which fee shall be $10.00, or
such other sum as shail, from time to
time,  be determined by the Society by
resolution passed in the manner required
by the "Societies Act" for the passing
of an Extraordinary resolution.
(b) All moneys received by student
organizations under the Society. Such
moneys shall be remitted by the treasurer of such organization forthwith after
receipt of same to the business office
of the Society.
2. Any application for a refund of
fees of the Society shall be made in
writing and delivered to the Secretary
of the Society on or before the Thirty-
first day of October of the current session.
3. The budget of the Society shall be
prepared by the Treasurer from the estimates of the proposed expenditures of
the Undergraduate Societies, the Literary and Scientific Executive, the Athletic Associations and the Student Publications, and presented in the fourth
week of the fail term to the Students'
Council  for adoption.
4. The said estimates shall be In the
hands of the Treasurer before the third
week of the fall  term.
5. Any student organization under the
Society may spend money for the purposes and up to the amount prescribed for
Its use in the said budget, but shall not
spend moneys which are not prescribed
in the budget except by special permission in writing first had and obtained
from  the  Students'   Council.
. 6. AU moneys raised by donations to
the Women's Union Building Fund and
proceeds of special functions of the Women's Undergraduate Society shall be
deposited in a trust fund for the permanent Women's Union Building, and shaU
be administered by the Women's Undergraduate Society subject to the approval
of  the   Students'   Council. 58
Article V — Reports
1. The annual report from the secretaries and finance managers of the Undergraduate Societies, the Literary and
Scientific Executives, the Publications'
Board, the Athletic Associations and
each of their subsidiary organizations
shall be in the hands of the Secretary
of the Society within ten days from the
date of the election of the President of
the said organization.
2. A special report shaU be submitted
at any time at the request of the Students' Council.
Article VI —Faculty Committee
The Faculty Committee on Student
attains shail subject to Article m Section
4, Part (b), be the first medium between
the Student body and the University authorities. The Society or the Students'
CouncU shall at all times be entitled to
call upon the said committee to confirm
the activities of the Society by endorsing
from time to time its proposals and resolutions.
Article VTl —Joint Committee
All matters concerning which a conference is deemed advisable shall be referred to a Joint Committee on Student
Affairs which shall be composed of three
representative of the Faculty and three
members of the Students' Council. Should
this Committee not endorse the proposals
of the Society it may amend or annul
them and its decision shall be considered
as the combined judgment of the Faculty
and students. A minority of two members of this Committee with the consent
of the Chairman of the Committee may
appeal to the Senate on any decisions
made by the Committee. The office of
Chairman of the Committee shall be held
by one of the Faculty members and he
shall in the event of a tie vote on any
question, be entitled to a casting vote.
Article Vfflt—Social Functions
1. A joint meeting of the executives
of the'Men's Undergraduate Society, and
the'Wotnen's Undergraduate Society, the
Men's Athletic Association and the Women's Athletic Association shall arrange
a schedule of social functions and athletic activities under the jurisdiction of
the Society for the current year. This
schedule shall be presented to the Students' CouncU for ratification not later
than the end of the third week in the
fall term.
2. AU organizations under the jurisdiction of the Society desiring to hold a
Social function shall first secure permission by resolution of the Students' Council.
3. Attendance at University dances
shall be restricted to members of the
Society and guests. Guests shail be:
(a) Honorary guests, who shall comprise such persons as the Alma Mater
Society sees  fit  to invite:
(b) Such guests as may be invited
by members of the Society, each member to be entitled to one guest. No couple
consisting of two persons neither of
whom are members of the Society shall
be permitted to attend. The admission to
dances shall be by ticket and invitation.
The arrangements for any social functions under the jurisdiction of the Society
must be submitted for the approval of
the Students' CouncU at least two weeks
before the date of the function.
4. All functions under the jurisdiction
of the Society shail end at or before 1.00 60
Article IX —Gambling
Card playing, except at University
functions, and gambUng in any form
such as coin tossing or dice throwing
for money or any monetary equivalent
whatsoever theft, wrong-doing generaUy
and breach of the peace is prohibited
within the precincts of the University.
Article X — Drinking
"Drinking of Intoxicating Uquors on
the University campus or at any University function is prohibited and any
person appearing on the University
campus or at any Unversity function
while showing any evidence of having
consumed intoxicating liquor shall be
subject to penalty."
Article XI—Price of Tickets
A member of the Society who has purchased a ticket for any University function shall not seU such ticket to any
other person for a price higher than
that set for such ticket by the Committee in charge of such a function.
Article XII — Discipline
1. A standing Committee of DiscipUne
shall be appointed annually by the Students' CouncU and be responsible to it;
the members of the Committee shall be:
(a) The President of the Men's Undergraduate  Society.
(b) The President of the Arts Men's
Undergraduate  Society.
(c)( The President of the Science
Men's  Undergraduate  Society.
(d)    The  President  of  the  Agricultural Undergraduate Society.
(e) The President  of  the Women's
Undergraduate   Society.
(f) The Vice-President of the Junior
(g) The Vice-President  of  the  Sophomore Year.
The President of the Men's Undergraduate Society shaU be Chairman of this
Committee and in his absence from any
meeting, the members of the Committee
present shall choose one of their members  to be Chairman  of such  meeting.
2. The Committee shall meet at least
once a month at the caU of the Chairman or at any time at the request of
three members of the Committee.
3. Every student or group of students
whether individually or as members of an
organization under the Society or any
other group of students using the University name and crest, or representing
the University in any way, shall be responsible to the Students' Council for the
conduct of the individual, organization
or group in any way in which it may
be held directly or indirectly to affect
the University.
4. Subject to the approval of the Students' Council this Committee shall have
power to levy and collect fines not exceeding $5.00 for the infraction of any
By-Law of the Society, and to levy such
fines or impose such penalties as this
Committee may see fit for the breach of
or non-compiiance with any rule, regulation or decision of the Society or the

Article xm — Injuries
The Society shall not be liable  for,
nor assume any obligation in respect of 62

Article XV — Speakers
If any subsidiary organization of the
Society desires to invite a speaker other
than a member of the Society to address
University students it shail first apply in
writing to the Students' Council for permission so to do, and the Students' Council shall have absolute discretion as to
the granting or refusing of such permission.
Article XVI — Organisations
1. All Student Organizations within
the University shall be classified as follows:
(a) Literary   and   Scientific.
(b) Undergraduate   Societies.
(c) Athletic  Associations.
(d) The  Publications'   Board
(e) Student Organizations of affiliated Colleges.
2. The said Organizations shall be
composed of such Subsidiary Organizations  and  activities  as  their  respective
Constitutions may provide, and as are
approved, from time to time, by the
Students'  Council.
3. All of the said Organizations and
their Subsidiary Organizations shail be
responsible to the Students' Council for
the proper conduct of their affairs in
accordance with the By-laws, rules, regulations and decisions of the Students'
Council or the Society, from time to time,
in force, and of this Code.
Article XVII —New Organisations
1. Any proposed Student Organization
for any activity under the Society shall
make application to the Students' Council for permission to organize.
2. Any Student Organization not subsidiary to the Society shall make application in writing to the Students' Council for permission to use the University
name and crest. With the application the

Article XIX — Organization Minutes
Five copies of the minutes of both executive and general meetings of the Men's
Undergraduate Society, the Women's Un-
dergraduate Society, the Men's Athletic
Association, the Women's Athletic Association, the Literary and Scientific Executive, the Interfraternity Council, the
Panhellenic Association shall be forwarded to the Students' Council immediately
following the said meetings to be considered and if thought fit approved by
the Students' Council before being posted. After approval by the Students' Council, four copies of these minutes shall be
forwarded to the Faculty Committee on
Student Affairs together with the Minutes of the Students' Council approving
Article XX
AU student organizations or groups of
Students who propose to organize or conduct any function in the name of the
University outside the precincts of the
University shall secure permission by
resolution of the Students' CouncU before
organizing or conducting such function.
Article XXI — General
. .1. The Students' Council shall have
power to appoint Committees to control
student activities or for any other purpose and in particular but without Umit-
lng the generality of the foregoing shall
appoint the following committees.
(a) The DiscipUne Committee referred to in Article XII hereof which
shail be in charge of all matters of Student  discipUne  within  the University:
(b) Elections Committed'which shall
be in charge of ail elections conducted
by the Society or the Students' Council.
(c) Homecoming Committee which
shall consist of the presidents of each
year and which shall be in charge of all
Homecoming activities.  This Committee 66
shali present to the Students' Council
for ratification a complete schedule of all
proposed Homecoming activities at least
two weeks before Homecoming. The
Junior Member shall be Chairman of this
(d) Initiation Committee which shall
be in charge of all initiation activities.
The President of the Men's Undergraduate Society shall be Chairman of this

(a) Editor-in-chief of the Publications Board. This officer shall be appointed by the Students' Council immediately following the election of the President  of  the  Society:

Publications Board, the Secretary of the
Literary and Scientific Executive and the
Secretary of the Men's Undergraduate
Society shall be appointed by the Students' Council at the first Students'
Council meeting following the election
or appointment of the head of the department concerned, and shall be appointed in collaboration with representatives of the retiring executive of the
said department:
(c) The Senior Editors of Student
Publications. These appointments shall
be  made  at   the  first   Students'   Council
meeting following the appointment of
the Editor-in-chief of the Publications
Board and shall be made in collaboration
with the Publications Board.
(d) The Student members, from the
Students' Council, to act on the Joint
Committee  on   Student  affairs.
The Students' Council shall make the
above appointments in collaboration with
and on the recommendation of the outgoing officers concerned.
3. The Students' Councii shall have
power to make such further rules and
regulations consistent with the constitution of the Society as it considers advisable relating to any student activities,
under the control of the Society.
Article XXII — Amendments to the
By - Laws
1. Any proposed amendment or a-
mendments to the By-laws of the Society shail be signed by at least one hundred members of the Society entitled to
Vote and shall be handed to the Secretary
of the Society or subtnitted unanimously
by tho Students' Council, and shall be
governed by Section 22, sub-section 2, of
the "Societies Act".
2. The Secretary of the Society shall
forthwith after receipt post at least three
copies of the proposed amendment or a-
mendments in conspicuous places about
the University buildings and shall submit a copy of the same to the Students'
Council at the first meeting of the Council held after the receipt of the same by

Scholastic Standing
(a) Satisfactory scholastic standing shall be understood, In general,  to  mean: 72
i. where the course consists of
fifteen units, passing in nine;
ii. where the course consists of
twelve units, passing in six,
with  an  average  of  55%;
iii. where the course consists of
nine units, passing in six, with
an average of 60%.
3. In the case of any member of the
Alma Mater Society carrying
an irregular course, his status
shall be determined by a separate minute of the Students'

further with any activity if
they fail to obtain a satisfactory scholastic standing as defined in Section 2, at the Christmas  Examinations.
(b) Students other than freshmen
may not participate in any activity unless they have obtained
a satisfactory scholastic standing as defined above. When

the following Christmas Examinations such students may participate in any activity subject
to any regulations contained

in any activity unless they obtained an average of 50% in the
examinations held immediately

(a) The President of Men's Athletics and the President of
Women's Athletics shall obtain,
from the managers of men's
major sports and from the
presidents of men's sports other
than major; and from the presidents of the Women's Athletic clubs, a list of all students turning out for the sports.
This list shall be handed in to
the Registrar for verification
of the eligibility or non-eligibility of the players. The verified list shall be submitted to
the Eligibility Committee within three weeks of the opening
of the fall term.
(b) For members of the W. A. A.
Executive and of the M.A.A.
A list of these members shall
be obtained by the Presidents
of the two organizations and
shall be submitted to the Registrar and then to the Eligibility
Committee (See 5(a) for the
full   procedure).
(c) For such sports as do not com- 74
mence at the beginning of the

for these sports the president of
the club concerned (or manager if it is a major sport) shall
send a list of the players to
the President of Men's or
Women's Athletics; this latter
shall immediately have the
eligibility of the players checked

(d) When the lists in the above
sections are submitted to the
Eligibility Committee, the said
committee shall recommend to
Students' Council the withdrawal from the two athletic
executives, and from participation in the various sports concerned, of those students who
have not come up to the required standards as outlined
earlier. The final decision on
this matter shall rest with
Students' Council.
(e) All students are eligible to
play on second and lower division teams so long as the
games are played in "Vancouver and District." Permission
for any player to participate in
games  outside  Vancouver  and
District will only be granted
when his or her scholastic
standing is in accordance with
the required scholastic standing.
(a) Student offices shall be ranked
as in Section 18 of the Code of
the A. M. S.
i.    "A" Offices
All students holding "A" offices must be eligible from the
previous spring examinations,
as determined by Section 2,
but shall not be declared ineligible due to scholastic standing during their term of office,
beginning at the commencement of the fall term.
ii.   "B" Offices
All students holding "B" offices must be eligible from the
previous spring examinations
and may be declared ineligible
if their scholastic standing
falls below that as outlined in
Section 2 during their term of
office. This ruling shall apply
to all members of the Publications  Board.
Ui.   "C" Offices
All class executives shall be re- 76
quired to be eligible as from
the previous spring examinations and the presidents of the
classes shall be further required to gain the required
scholastic standing in any set
of examinations written during
their term of office.
(c) The method of enforcing these
rules for Undergraduate Societies shall be as follows: the
President of the M. U. S., the
President of the W. U. S., the
Editor-in-Chief of the PubUcations Board, shall submit to the
Eligibility Committee a verified list of the marks of all
students holding any office in
these organizations. This list
shall be submitted not later
than three weeks after the commencement of the fall term,
and not later than two weeks
after the commencement of the
spring term.

(a) No Freshman shall engage in
any major activity of the Debates Union or the Musical Society during the first term
should he or she go below an
average of 50% in the mid-term
examinations or during the
second term if he or she ob-
tains an average below 50% in
the Christmas Examinations.
(b) No Freshman shall be eligible
for the Players' Club unless he
or she obtain an average of
at least 55% in the Junior Matriculation Examinations and he
or she shall be automatically
disqualified for membership
during the remainder of the

(c) No student shall be a member
of the above clubs unless he or
she is registered for at least

CURATOR  (Ted  Madeley)
The curator is the keeper of all
the athletic equipment of the Alma
Mater Society. He is in his office at
the south-east corner of the gymnasium at certain hours as posted and
all equipment must be obtained from
him and returned to him at the end
of the season. For Canadian Rugby
a player may after depositing a nominal sum with the Curator obtain a
complete outfit for the season. The
deposit is refunded on return of the

covered by a purchase order by the

houses of this city have been informed of this ruling and it will be
rigidly  observed   by   council.

1916 as a monthly magazine and is
now entering on its tenth year as a

every Tuesday and Friday noon except in examination weeks. The

by students and trials for new reporters are held at the first of the term.
The Publications board is affiliated
with the Pacific Inter-collegiate Press
Association and exchange news from

A Literary Supplement which is

University Athletics exist to prevent the unhealthy condition resulting from the indoor work of the
student. The object is not to train
star athletes but to develop young
and inexperienced athletes. An extensive program of physical education
was arranged last year under the
supervision of competent instructors,
and all students are urged to attend
the classes provided.
There is an opportunity for everyone to take part in whatever sport
he desires as teams of all calibres
axe organized. Places on teams are
given, without favoritism or prejudice, to the best man.
Those who are not capable of active physical participation may obtain positions managing these teams.
No student is allowed during the
session to take part in athletic competitions or games for any team or
other organization other than a University team without the consent in
writing of the Men's or Women's Athletic Association approved by resolution of the Students' Council.

The Governor's Cup donated for
Men's Inter-Class Athletics is competed for by all'the classes in almost

Spencer Cup. Competitions are held

(a) Basketball: One-half of
the total playing time in
league games and equivalent.
(b) Canadian Rugby: One-
third of the total playing
time in league games and
(c) English Rugby: Participation in three-quarters
of the McKechnie Cup
games and equivalent.
(d) Track: Five points in a
Western Canadian Inter
collegiate Track Meet, or
particularly outstanding
performance throughout
the year in Track. (Points
awarded, 5-3-1.)
(2) Any athlete representing the
University, in any other sport,
who  has  turned  in  performances which compare favourably with the Canadian championship    standard    in    that

regulations and who have the recommendation of the Captain and
President of   the  Club,  shall  be
possible candidates for the small
block,  which shall be  given en-
tirely   at   the    discretion   of  the

Sub-Major Sport who participate in one-half meets or total playing time.
(4) Any athlete whose exceptional work in Minor Sport during the season or the Playoffs gives him the vote of the
Captain of the team and the
President of the Club.
(5) Any athlete in a Sub-Minor
Sport representing the University, having turned in a
performance comparable with
B. C. championship standard.
(e) Athletes in any team in any sport
who have the recommendation of
the Captain of the team and the 90
President of the Club, shall be
possible candidates for the Plain
Letter, which shall be given entirely at the discretion of the
Awards Committee,
(f) The Committee may consider any
case which is properly brought
before it, and make any award
which it deems fit.
(a) The selections of winners and re-
winners of awards shall be vested
in the "Awards Committee," which
shall be composed of:
(1) President of Men's Athletics,
who shall act as chairman.
(2) Captains of first teams in major sports.
(3) One member of the Alumni
appointed by the Alumni Association.
(4) One member of Faculty appointed by the President.
(a) No person shall wear a lower
award than the highest which he

"Managerial Department of the Men's
Athletic Association of the University
of British Columbia".
The Manager System in the Department of Men's Athletics is designed to
give the maximum efficiency in the
administration of Men's sports. It is
designed primarily for the major
sports, and shall apply to each major
The personnel in each branch of
sport shall consist of:
(a) Faculty Representative.
(b) Senior Manager.
■ (c) Not  less   than   two,   nor  more
than three Associate Managers,
(d) Not  less  than  four,  nor  more
than six Junior Managers.
A. 1. The Faculty Representative
shall be chosen from the Faculty by the active members of
each major sport at a General
2. The Senior Manager in each
major sport shall be chosen
from the Associate Managers in
that major sport by the outgoing Senior Manager, Faculty
Representative, Head Coach and
President of the Men's Athletics Association.
3. Associate Managers in each
major sport shall be chosen
from the Junior Managers by
the Senior Manager and Faculty
Representative of that major
4. Junior Managers in each major
sport shall be chosen from applicants for those positions by
the Senior Manager and Faculty
Representative of that major
B. 1. All appointments except those
of Junior Managers shall be
made at the end of the spring
term and passed by the outgoing Students' Council.
2. Any filling of vacancies in the
autumn shall be done by the
Senior Manager and the Faculty
Representative of the sport concerned.
3. In the event of a Senior Manager failing to return in the
autumn,   the  selection  commit- 96
tee shall be comprised of the
Faculty Representative and the
Head Coach of the sport concerned and the President of
Men's Athletics.
Any manager may be removed
from office by Students' Council
at any time.
A. Faculty Representative—
The Faculty Representative in
each major sport shall act in an
advisory capacity to the Senior
Manager in regard to policy.
B. Senior Manager—
(a) He shall have complete control over all managers in his

Faculty Representative, have
complete control of the administration in his department, subject to the approval
of Students' Council in every
(c) He shall represent his department of sport in the Men's
Athletic Executive.
(d) He shall be responsible to
Students' Council in all matters pertaining to his depart-
ment.   These shall be—
i. Leagues,
ii. Play-off Series,
iii. Trips,
iv. Finances, etc.
(e) He shall travel with the first
team and act as business
manager on all away trips, as
approved by Students' Council.
(f) He, or one of the Associate
Managers, appointed by him,
shall be one of the representatives of the University on
league councils, together with
one representative appointed
by Students' Council.
C. Associate  Manager
(a) Their duties shall be assigned
by the Senior Manager.
(b) They may represent the University at League meetings.
D. Junior Managers—
Their duties shall be any duties
assigned to them by any Senior
Manager or Associate Manager.
Functions of Managers
A. A combined committee of Faculty
Representative, Senior Manager
and Associate Managers in each
major sport shall be required to 98
meet every two weeks or oftener
if necessary during the playing
B. Each Senior Manager shall call at
least one general meeting per session of the active members in his
branch of sport, and he shall preside over the meeting.
C. The Senior Manager shall announce at the final General Meeting each year the appointments
for the coming session.
D. No manager shall play any sport
which shall interfere with his
managerial duties.
Senior Manager—
The Senior Manager shall receive a regulation Big Block
Sweater in light blue color but
with no armband and with the
letter M in gold chenille on the
Associate Managers—
The Associate shall receive a
regulation Small Block with the
letter "M" attached.
Junior Managers—
Shall receive no award except
qualification for promotion.
D. The awards to Associate and
Senior Managers shall be made on
their return to University in the
autumn following their appointment. In the case of a manager
being compelled to retire before
his term of office is completed, his
award shall be returned to the
Alma Mater Society.

President — Dave   Carey
Membership in the Men's Athletic
Association is automatically conferred on all men students in the
Alma Mater Society. The executive
composed of presidents of all branches of sport, is responsible for the
organization and administration of
men's  athletics.
The Association has been recognized
as a local board of the Amateur Athletic Union of Canada.
To encourage a man to stick to the
sport he is best suited for, we give
our highest athletic award to an athlete who measures up to a certain
standard in that sport. However, most
of the Big Blocks go to the Major
Sports, the small letters to the Minor
Sports, and the plain letters to the
Sub-Minor Sports. The second team
in a Major Sport has rating of Minor
Sport, while the third team in a Major Sport and the second team of a
Minor Sport have Sub-Minor rating.
The sports are classified into four
groups as follows, due to achievement
and interest shown:
(a) Major: Basketball, Canadian
Rugby, English Rugby, Track,
(b) Sub-Major:   Swimming.
(c) Minor: Badminton, Golf, Grass
Hockey, Ice Hockey, Rowing.
(d) Sub-Minor: Boxing, Fencing,
Gymnasium, Outdoors, Skating.
President — Beth Evans
Membership in this society is automatically conferred on all women
members of the Alma Mater Society.
The executive which consists of presidents of the various athletics and
respresentatives of the classes is responsible for the administration of
women's athletics.
Membership in this club is automatically conferred on winners of the
Big Block Award. It was organized
to unite Varsity sport and advise
prospective athletes on University
sports. 104
This club has been organized to retain a high standard in Varsity
sports and to assist prospective athletes. The Awards Committee of this
club has the power to suggest students for the Big Block Award.
Senior Manager — Arthur Eastham
The basketball club enters at least
three' teams during the season. The
Senior "A" team plays in the Inter-
City "A" League and plans to tour
Washington during the Christmas vacation. The Senior "B" and Intermediate teams which play in the C.
V. A. A. League often arrange games
with out of town teams. There is
room for all freshmen who turn out
this   fall.
Manager — Margaret Walker
The Senior Basketball team is entered in the Senior "A" League. The
club also has an intermediate team
and basketball classes for new players. Two hour practices are held
twice a week and one game is played
every  week.
Senior Manager — Gordon Grant
The Canadian Rugby Club is entering the senior team in the Big Four
League and there will be a team entered in a Junior League. A trip to
Alberta and games with Alberta here,
have been planned in competition for
The Hardy Cup. Freshmen, turn out!
Senior Manager — Sid Walker
The Senior English Rugby team
will enter the Miller Cup Series and
McKechnie Cup Series. This team
plans to make a trip to California
where they will play Stanford. There
will also be two or three teams entered in the Junior League and there
will be room for all freshmen who
turn out for this sport.
Senior Manager -
-Dave Kato
The senior soccer team is entered
in the Vancouver and District Senior
League and competes for the Imperial cup and the Mainland Cup. Two
junior teams will be entered this
year in two city junior leagues. Inter-class soccer will be revived on a
larger scale and tentative plans for
a  trip  to  Victoria  have  been  made. 106
Senior   Manager — Joe   Rita
During the first term the Track
Club holds a meet against the Frosh,
Arts '30 Road Race, High School
Meet, an indoor meet with Victoria
Y. M. C. A. and several noon-hour
meets. The Spring term activities include The Cross Country race, Arts
'20 race, and a trip to Washington
President — Wilson  McDuffee
The boat club uses the premises of
the Vancouver Rowing Club. A fall
regatta is held with a local school
for the purpose of arranging crews.
In the spring an inter-collegiate regatta is held. A trip to southern
colleges is arranged.
President — Archie Byers
The swimming club for both men
and women, engages a tank two or
three nights a week. Competition is
carried on with prominent Vancouver clubs and University of Washington. An inter-class meet is also held.
President — Ronald Allen
The badmington club plays two
nights a week in the university gym-
nasium. Fees are $3 for two terms or
$2 a term. Games with outside clubs
are arranged. This club is open to
both men  and  women.
Open to both men and women, the
golf club has its headquarters at the
University Golf Course. A handicap
tournement is held during the fall
term and the University Championship tournement in the Spring. A
match with U. of Washington is generally held as well as a tour of southern colleges. Fifty cent membership
cards enable a student to obtain a
cheaper   rate   on  the   course.
The club enters two teams in the
Mainland League and often plays
games in Victoria and Duncan. Freshmen are welcomed as members.
President — Margaret Evans
The only outdoor sport in which
women may participate the grass
hockey club, is affiliated with the
Lower Mainland Ladies' Grass Hockey League.  Games  are  played with 108
Ex-high teams in the city. A Varsity
rep. team meets a high school rep.

is held and games are played on Sa-
turdy afternoon.
President — Ralph  Cudmore
The ice-hockey club plays games
with the University of Washington
and hopes to enter a local league. The
tlub may find it difficult to reserve
ice this winter but it is hoped that
practices can be held once a week.
A  membership fee  of $1 is  charged.
The boxing and wrestling club has
been combined with the regular physical education curriculum under the
physical director. New equipment has
been acquired and this branch of
sport expects to have a successful
This club holds hikes nearly every
week of the fall term and skiis at
their cabins on Grouse Mountain
during the spring terra. A triangular
meet with University of Washington
and College of Puget Sound as well
as trips to Washington are outstanding  events  of the  year.
This executive presides over such
student activities as may be termed
cultural or instructive. The president
is a member of Council elected by
the student body as a whole and acts
as a medium between the Students'
Council and the societies under the
control of the executive.
President — Farley Dickinson
The Agriculture Discussions Club,
open to all students Interested in Agriculture, holds evening meetings
fortnightly and also a series of noon-
hour meetings. Prominent men give
lectures on agricultural topics and
discussion follows. An annual livestock judging competition held at
the Experimental Farm at Agassiz is
followed by a banquet
Every January the club sponsors a
barn dance.
Evening meetings of the A. I. E.E.
at which papers are presented by the
members are held every two weeks.
Membership is limited to students in 112
the fourth and fifth years of electrical engineering but students in lower
years are allowed to attend meetings.
President — Max Maynard
The Art Club is an organization
for the purpose of enabling interested
students to learn more of the subject. Evening meetings are held fortnightly at which lectures are given
and discussed. The club sponsors art
exhibits during the year. Membership
is open and practical ability is not
President — Hugh  McKay
Meetings of the Biological Discussions Club are held every second
week at the homes of members. The
program consists of papers given by
members and sometimes includes a
guest speaker. Membership is limited
to twenty five and the prerequisite
is  Biology  1.
This society is composed of students taking Chemistry 3 or higher.
Papers are prepared and reajd by
members at regular meetings. Open
meetings at which prominent scientists or members of the faculty speak
are held throughout the year.
The Classics club was formed for
those interested in Classical Subjects.
Meetings are held every three weeks
when papers, prepared by the members, on various aspects of Greek and
Roman civilizations, axe given discussion is led by members of the
Staff of the Classics department
Membership is restricted to students
of upper years.
President —Alan Walsh
The purpose of the Cosmopolitan
Club is to stimulate friendly relations among the different nationalities on the campus and to encourage
the discussion of international affairs. Sunday supper meetings are
held once a month. The club sponsors nationalistic exhibits. Membership  is  open.
The student branch of the E. I. C.
was organized for the purpose of
bringing student engineers in closer
contact with the engineering profession. Weekly noon-hour meetings are
held, at which visiting engineers give
talks. Trips to various places of engineering interest are arranged. 114
Although intended primarily for
Forestry Engineering students this
club is open to all students interested
in forestry. Lectures are given by
prominent members of the lumbering industry, forestry profession, and
the faculty. Prepared papers are also
given  by members.
President — Elizabeth Houston
La Canadiene and Le Cerele Francais have been organized to encourage fluency in french conversation.
The program of the fortnightly meetings consist in lectures, french music
and conversation. Members are chosen
from the two upper years and a few
vacancies are reserved for fall application.
Der Deutsche Verein was organized
for the study of German culture and
life and to promote fluency in conversation. Membership is limited to
students  of  the  two  upper  years.
President — Noel   Hendry
Membership is limited to students
who have taken or are taking at
least  two courses in  geology or stu-
dents who have spent one year on a
geological survey. A membership fee
of one dollar is charged. For an additional fee of one dollar members
may become affiliated as student
members of the Canadian Institute
of Mining and Metallurgy (C.I.M.M.).
Lectures which are given by members or prominent engineers are followed by discussion. A social evening
finishes  the  meeting.
The historical society limits its
membership to twenty upper year
Students which are chosen from applications received. One topic is
chosen for the year on which senior
students give papers. There are a few
vacancies   for   fall   application.
Formed under the auspices of the
Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, this club purposes the
study of international affairs. Students who show a genuine interest
in the purpose of the club and who
have completed their freshman year
are  eligible  for membership. 116
The object of this club Is to promote unity and goodwill among its
members and a better understanding
with students of other nationalities.
The club holds a general meeting
each spring and fall and several social-educational meetings during the
year. Membership is open to Japanese
President — Reginald Jessnp
The Letters Club the oldest discussion club on the campus meets every
two weeks to discuss the aspects of
literature. Papers are read by the
members. Membership is limited to
twenty four from the two upper
years. As vacancies occur applications for membership are received
and new members are chosen by
their interest in literature.
President — Kae   Farqohar
The Literary Forum is a club organized for the purpose of training
women students in self expression.
Noon-hour meetings are held twice
a month at which speeches prepared
by members, or debates are held.
Dean Bollert as honorary president
proves a sympathetic and able critic.
Membership is open.
The Mathematics club was founded
for the discussion of problems and
methods not included in the curriculum. At the fortnightly meetings
papers are given by professors and
members. Membership is limited to
twenty five honor students and
The aim of this society is to further interest in Jewish Culture. A reception is held at the beginning of
the year to welcome Jewish freshmen. Papers followed by discussion
are given at the meetings.
President — Elmer Jones
The object of the club is to bring
together students intending to enter
the medical profession. Four meetings
are held during each term at which
lectures are given. The club makes
trips to various city hospitals. Membership is restricted to pre-medical
students, nurses and students contemplating medical  courses. 118
President — William Cameron
The Musical Society aims to cultivate and encourage an interest and
appreciation for music. Noon hour
recitals of instrumental and vocal
solo work as well as choral and orchestral selections are presented. The
final production of the year is in the
nature of a Gilbert and Sullivan
opera. Admittance is by private try-
out. A nominal membership fee is
The object of the club is to bring
together Catholic students, each of
whom is automatically a member
upon entering the University. Notices
of meetings are sent to members by
President — Ludlow Beamish
The parliamentary forum is a newly
formed organization for the purpose
of teaching and encouraging public
speaking and debating. Meetings are
held fortnightly and are held according to British Parliamentary Procedure, with a speaker and organized
parties. Debates, also, are held with
Canadian and American Universities.
Membership is open.
The Pep club is a service organization which performs the duties of
selling tickets and taking charge of
gate as well as cheer leading at Varsity sports. This club also does poster
advertising for all the other associations on the campus. Membership is
limited to thirteen and new members are chosen from the applicants
from the freshman year.
President —Madge Neil!
Entering on its third year as an organization at U.B.C., Phrateres is the
largest women's club on the campus.
Membership is open to any sorority
or non-sorority girl who is in sympathy with the ideals of the society
as expressed in its motto "Famous
for Friendliness." A banquet for the
inaugeration of officers and initiation of new members is held at the
beginning of the year. The large organization, All-Pbrateres, is divided
into sub-chapters which meet twice
a month to discuss business and for
social purposes. All-Phrateres meets
several  times  during  the  year.
Phrateres is an ideal opportunity
for freshettes to become acquainted
with a large number of the students
on the campus and to take part in
campus activities. 120
President — Shuichi Kusaka
Meetings of the Physics Club are
held every two weeks generally in
lecture rooms at the University. Each
member is required to give a paper
during the year on subjects of interest in Physics. The program also includes guest speakers. Members must
be taking or have taken at least one
course in Physics.
President — Norah Gibson
The Players' Club, founded a few
weeks after the opening of the University in 1915 is today one of the
most active campus organisations
and perhaps unique in the field of
amateur theatricals in Canada. Membership is limited to seventy, sixty of
whom must pass competitive tryouts
and ten as a result of technical skill.
Excellent facilities are available for
finished performances on the auditorium stage. A prize of fifty dollars
is offered for the student submitting
the best play suitable for the Club's
Christmas Performance. The annual
Spring Play tours British Columbia
and has played in twenty different

The Psychology club was formed
for social and discussion purposes
and meets every second week at the

The Students' Christian Movement
is open to all students really interested in working out an Intelligent
philosophy of life. Weekly study
groups on the Life and teaching of
Jesus and on problems of modern
life are held.
Also sponsored by the club are
week-end discussion camps, informal
evenings at the homes of members
and a Spring Camp for one week at
the end of the spring term.
The Student League of Canada was
organized to encourage a body of
progressive opinion on the campus.
The program includes a strong stand
against   fascism   and   war   although 122
the organization is not necessarily pacifist It draws its membership from
those students who are becoming
liberal or radical minded.
This society purposes to act as a
co-ordinating body between the various clubs in the Faculty of Applied
Science. Each branch of engineering
has a representative on the committee of the Society, and each section
in  turn  sponsors  a  speaker.
President —Robert Melville
The object of the Union is to defend and proclaim the fundamental
truths of the Christian Faith and to
present a witness, both spiritual and
intellectual, to the truths of historic,
evangelistic Christianity. Meetings
are held at noon hour three times
a week. The yearly program includes
dinners speakers and services in city
churches. The organization is affiliated with the Inter-Varsity Christian
Fellowship of Canada and holds annual conferences with the University
as well. Membership  is  open.
