**^P   (215)      The fourth regular meeting of the Senate of the University of
j .   y British Columbia for the Session 1917-18 was held on Wednesday, May

(216) Present: The President, in the Chair, Dean KLinok, Dr. Ashton,
Mr. Robertson, Mr. Chodat, Bishop de Pencier, Mr. Burns, Mr. Brough,
f<u*4tJ~ Dr. MoKeohnie, Judge Howay, Mr. Gordon, Mr. Turnbull and the
Seoretary.
The minutes of the special meeting of March 22nd., 1918 were
a . _ , /  read. It was moved by Judge Howay, seconded by Bishop de Pencier,
'    *fy       ^^ these, wl th the minutes of the two preceding meetings which
had been read at the meeting of March 22nd., should be confirmed.

(217) The Seoretary read a letter from Mr. Justice Eberts regretting

(218) The report of Faoulty on the Sessional Examinations was then
submitted and considered Faculty by Faoulty and year by year.
The Pass lists of the Faculty of Arts were passed.

Scholarships and the Class Prizes was considered.
The recommendation of Faculty with regard to Seoond Year
Scholarships "that if the money oan be found a third scholarship be

(219) The following letter dated April 19th., 1918 from the Registrar
to the Seoretary of Senate was read:

"I beg to submit for the consideration and approval of Senate t^
the following recommendations^ passed by Faoulty at its meeting
of Tuesday, April 16th:
"That provision be made for conferring degrees in absentia
upon duly qualified candidates who may be prevented from
appearing in person by military service, employment upon
productive war service or such other causes as may seem
good to the Senate."

Mr. Turnbull) This recommendation was adopted.
(220)      The Seoretary then read the report of the Scrutineers of the
Eleotion of Chancellor and Elective members of the Senate under date
of April 4th., 1918. A similar report by the Registrar under date of
April 6th., 1918 was also read.

^*^ Mr. Gordon ) That the report be received and spread on the
btJ**^ ^nutes and that the Secretary be asked to send a summary of this

Election of Chancellor and Elective Members of the Senate.
To the Senate of the University of British Columbia.
We, the undersigned, having been appointed your scrutineers,
beg to report that -
The total number of ballots received was 342. Of these 324 were
valid, but 4 did not bear any vote for Chancellor; 10 were spoiled
ballots; and 8 were received after the time appointed by statute and
therefore were unopened.

ELinok, that the eleotion by Senate be by ballot and that Mr. Burns
