Wednesday, July 29th, 1931
An adjourned speoial meeting of the Senate of The
University of British Columbia was held on Wednesday,
July 29th, 1931, at 8:00 p.m., in the Board Room.
Present: President Klinck (in the Chair), Dean F. M.
Clement, Dean D. Buchanan, Mr. E. A. Lloyd, Br. G. G. Moe,
Mr. J. M. Turnbull, Br. H. Tickers, Mr. H. F. Angus, Dr.
F. P. Patterson, Mr. G. W. Clark, Mr. P. H. Elliott, Rev.
Dr. ¥. H. Vance, Dr. G. G. Sedgewick, Mr. Sherwood Lett,
Mr. H. T. Logan, Mr. A. E. Lord, Judge J. D. Swanson,
Dr. Evlyn F. Farris, Miss A. B. Jamieson, Mr. Sydney
Anderson, Dr. V. B* Burnett, The Most Rev. A. U. de
Pencier and Mr. Lyle Atkinson.
The Secretary read the call of the meeting.
The President stated that a supplementary agenda
had been prepared, and asked if Senate wished it considered with the original agenda.

considered   section by  section.

of the action of the Board  in giving
us the information re departmental
appropriations for which we asked at
the last meeting.

Under   this   section   attention  was   called  to   the
statement   in  regard   to   limitation   in  First   Year   in  th* 147.

read and the regulations governing limitation as adopted
by the Board of Governors were presented for information.

reference   to  Prizes   and   Scholarships   be   approved   and   included
in   the   calendar.

considered  at  the   end   of   the
report   of   the   Calendar   Committee.

Committee   to   insert   a   statement
in   regard  to   the   Kiwanis   Club
Gold  Medal   after  consulting with
the   Scholarship   Committee   re

Scholarships  be   given power   to
make   the   necessary  changes   in  the

Committee   dealing   with   the  Faculty
of  Agriculture be  adopted.
In  amendment:
That   in   view   of   the   hardship   imposed
upon   students   and  their parents  by
the  unexpected   increase   in  fees   at
this   time,   Senate   respectfully   request   the  Board   of   Governors   to   reconsider  its   decision as   to   the   increase   in  fees  and   to   reconsider   the
increase   in   the   appropriation  made
for   the  Faculty  of   Agriculture   and
that   those   portions   of   the   calendar
affected  by   this   resolution
(namely,   pages   48-50   and   the   courses
in   the   Faculty   of   Agriculture)   be
deferred  for   consideration until
such  time   as   notification be   given
Senate   of   the   Board's   action upon
this   resolution.

memorialize the Board of Governors
to this effect: That it regrets
the necessity of raising the fees
in the present situation, and that
it respectfully urges the Board of

A letter was   received  from  the Board of   Governors
together  with  the   departmental   comparative   summation   of
the  budget   for  1951-52.

Letters were received from the Board of Governors
in regard to the limitation of registration of First Year
students and also the regulations in reference to the
selection of the applicants for admission.

Course in Home Economics
A letter from the Board of Governors was read in
which Senate was asked to advise the Board of the
minimum requirements for courses in Third and Fourth
Year Home Economics.

Faculty of Arts and Science.

A letter from the Board of Governors was read
stating that the following resolution had been passed
v by the Board of Governors at a meeting on July 13th:
"That the Honourable the Minister of
' > Education be requested to arrange for
a joint meeting of representatives of
the Department of Education, the Department of Agriculture and the Uni-
f v versity to study the agreement which
i was reached by these bodies in Novem-
/• ber, 1917, and to make such changes
therein aa circumstances warrant.  And
further, that the Board suggest, should
the Honourable the Minister of Education
deem it advisable, that the Dominion De-
y partment of Agriculture be invited to
send representatives to this meeting."

Board

A   letter  was   received   from   the  High  School   and
University Matriculation Board   embodying  the   following
resolution:
^
"That the achievement of Donald Campbell
MacPhail and Geoffrey Lionel Bodwell in
obtaining equal standing in Grade XI at
the head of the list, be reported by the
Board of Examiners with a recommendation
that an extra $50.00 be provided from
some source in order that each may have
a scholarship of $150.00."
