 Tuesday, November 28, 1961  3041
A special meeting of the Senate of the University
of British Columtoia was held on Tuesday, November 28, 1961,
at 4:00 p.m., in the Board and Senate Room, Administration
Present:  President N.A.M. MacKenzie (in the Chair),
Dean G.C. Andrew, Mrs. H.F. Angus, Rev. J. Blewett, Mrs.
T.R. Boggs, Mr. K.P. Caple, Mr. A.W.R. Carrothers, Dean S.N.F.
Chant, Dr. I.McT. Cowan, Dean G.F. Curtis, Dean B.A. Eagles,
Dean W.H. Gage, Very Reverend E. Garvey, Dr. W.C. Gitoson,
Mr. C.C. Gourlay, Mr. J.N. Hyland, Dr. R.D. James, Dr. F.H.
Johnson, Dr. J.E.A. Kania, Mr. F.M. Knapp, Mr. L.J. Ladner,
Mr. S.L. Lipson, Dean Helen McCrae, Dr. J.R. Mcintosh,
Dean E.D. MacPhee, Dean A.W. Matthews, Mr. F.A. Morrison,
Dean D.M. Myers, Mr. N.T. Nemetz, Dean G.N. Perry,
Mrs. F.M. Ross, Dr. C.A. Rowles, Dean N.V. Scarfe, Dean F.H.
Soward, Mr. E.C.E. Todd, Dr. G.M. Volkoff, Acting-Dean R.W.
Wellwood and Dr. S.H. Zbarsky.
Messages of regret for their inability to toe present
were received from Dr. G.R. Elliott, Mr. C.A. Emery, Mr. W.E.
Ireland, Mr. E.P. Nicol and the Honourable Mr. Justice
D.R. Verchere.
Before calling upon the Secretary to read the
results of the election for Chancellor of the University,
the President on toehalf of Senate presented flowers to
Mrs. Angus and Mrs. Ross. Tuesday, Novemtoer 28, 1961  3042
The Secretary then read the report of the
"TO: The Senate of the University of British Columtoia
We, the undersigned, having toeen appointed your
scrutineers, toeg to report that:
The Special Election for Chancellor was held on
Novemtoer 28, in conformity with the University Act
and the regulations of the Senate in reference thereto.
The total number of ballots received was 9,946.
Of these 9,895 were valid, 29 could not toe identified,
and 22 were spoiled.
We have counted the votes in the above-mentioned
valid ballots and find the following to toe the result:
Mrs. Ross - 6,209
Mrs. Angus - 3,686
Mrs. Ross has, therefore, toeen elected to the
Chancellorship for the unexpired term of the late
Chancellor Grauer.

On toehalf of Senate, the President extended
congratulations to Mrs. Ross on her election, and sympathy
to Mrs. Ross and the Honouratole F. M. Ross in his illness
and hospitalization.
The President also expressed appreciation for the
large number of graduates who had voted, and commented on
the public interest that had been aroused toy the election.
Mrs. Angus congratulated Mrs. Ross, and expressed
the hope that the heavy vote indicated that graduates would
increasingly feel responsibility for their University and
interest in its government. Tuesday, Novemtoer 28, 1961  3043
Mrs. Ross thanked Mrs. Angus, and assured Senate
that she would fulfil the duties of Chancellor and Chairman
of the Board of Governors to the toest of her ability.
The efficient handling of the election was
commended in two motions:

Dr. Rowles ) That Senate record its deep
appreciation and thanks to
Mr. Parnall and his staff for the
efficient manner in which the
balloting and counting of ballots
were organized.

Dean MacPhee) That Senate express its
appreciation to the scrutineers.
The meeting adjourned at 4:15 p.m.
