Friday, August 21st, 1942.
The fifth regular meeting of the Senate of the University of British Columbia for the session 1941-42 was held
on Friday, August 21st, 1942, at 8:00 p.m., in the Board
and Senate Room.
Present:  President L. S. Klinck (in the Chair), Dean
D. Buchanan, Dean J. N. Finlayson, Dean H. Dorothy Mawdsley,
Miss Isobel Harvey, Dr. Charles Wright, Mr. A. S. Matheson,
Dr. A. E. Dal Grauer, Mr. J. N. Harvey, Dr. J. F. Walker,
Mr. H. T. Logan, Dr. Blythe Eagles, Dr. M. Y. Williams,
Dr. H. V. Warren and Mr. A. E. Lord.
Expressions of regret at their inability to attend the
meeting were received from Mrs. John Creighton, Rev. J. G.
Brown and Dr. 0. J. Todd.

Mr. A.E.Lord) That the minutes of the meeting of
May 12th, 1942, be taken as read, and
adopted.

Senate Elections, and Representatives Appointed on Senate
The reports of the Scrutineers and the Registrar in
reference to the Election of Chancellor and Members of
Senate, on May 27th, 1942, were received for information,
as follows:
To the Senate of the University of British Columbia
The Senate Election for 1942 was held on May 27th
in conformity with the University Act and the regulations
of the Senate in reference thereto.
As there was only one candidate nominated for
Chancellor, namely, Robert Edward McKechnie, Esq., he
was duly elected by acclamation.
In the matter of the election of members of Senate,
the total number of ballots received was 1404.  Of these,
1397 were valid; 7 were spoiled (not signed, etc.). 900
Friday, August 21st, 1942.
The votes on the above-mentioned valid ballots
were counted by the Scrutineers with the following
result:

Notices were received of the appointment of the
following representatives on Senate:
Members appointed by the Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council
For the information of Senate, correspondence between
the Secretary of Senate and the Minister of Education relative to the appointment of members of Senate by the
Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council was read.  President Klinck
reported that no notification had been received regarding
the appointment of the above representatives.

(Elections will be held at the October meeting
of the Faculty of Applied Science)

(Elections will be held at the October meeting of

Representatives of Affiliated Colleges
Anglican Theological College - Rev. H. R. Trumpour
Victoria College - Mr. P. H. Elliott
Union College - The Secretary of Senate
reported that no notification had been received from
Union College regarding the appointment of a
representative on Senate.
The President stated that a representative of the
Senate to the Board of Governors would be appointed at
the meeting following the passing of the Order-in-Council
naming the Government's representatives on the Senate.
The Chairman extended a hearty welcome to new members 902

rendered by retiring members.

for University Women

A letter from the President, dated May 27th, 1942, was
read authorizing a change in the course offered in the
Summer Session, 1942, from Government 7 to Government 1.

Change of Course in Summer Session
Government 7 to Government 1       - approved
Cancellation of Summer Session Courses - approved
Appointment of Honorary Secretary of Board of Governors
A letter was received from the Board of Governors
stating that, following the retirement of Dr. Evlyn F.
Farris as Honorary Secretary of the Board of Governors,
Mr. Arthur E. Lord had been appointed to this position.
Degree of B.Ed. (Bachelor of Education) - approved.
Compulsory War Work Programme for University Women
For the information of Senate the following resolution passed by the Board of Governors on May 27th, 1942,
was read:
That the Compulsory War Work Programme as
recommended by the Senate Committee, be
approved for the Session 1942-43 only, and
that a sum of $250.00, chargeable to the
Contingent Fund, be made available for the
operation of this plan during the coming
session.
I.O.D.E. Scott Memorial Scholarship
Terms of Award - approved
Report of the President for the Academic Year ending
August 31st, 1942.
(Copies of the report had been mailed to members
of Senate)

From the Faculty of Arts and Science
Results of the Examinations of the Summer Session 904
Friday, August 21st, 1942.
Following a statistical summary of results, Dean
Buchanan presented the list of candidates recommended
for degrees by the Faculty of Arts and Science.

Dr. Grauer   ) That the students whose names
appear in the report be recommended
to Senate for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, subject to the approval
of the Chair in the cases where
examination results have not been
received.

notified by letter of his standing;
and that the detailed list of
results be sent to the press when
such list is complete.

Scholarships
A letter was received from the High School and University Matriculation Board recommending that the Senate make
arrangements for the granting of an extra Senior Matriculation Scholarship of $175.00 to provide for each of two
students who obtained the same marks.

hood for the degree of B.Ed. (Bachelor of Education)

A report of the Committee on Compulsory War Work for
University Women was received.

Dean Buchanan) That Senate approve of the report
of the Committee, and that this
report be received and filed.

For the information of Senate, a communication under
date of May 28th, 1942, was received from the Secretary of
the High School Accrediting Committee, enclosing a list of
fifty-five accredited High Schools for the school year
1941-42, together with the following resolution:
That all High Schools in the Province be permitted
to recommend for University Entrance standing
students of Grade XI and Grade XII who have made an 906

University Entrance, provided that the High School
> Principals concerned report that such students
have been offered and have accepted employment on
farms in the month of June, 1942.
