Tuesday, December 30, 1947.
A special meeting of the Senate of the University of
British Columbia was held on Tuesday, December 30th, 1947,
at 8:00 p.m., in the Board and Senate Room.
Present:  Dean J.N. Finlayson. Acting President (in
the Chair), Dean D. Buchanan, Dean F.M. Clement, Dean G.F.
Curtis, Dr. O.J. Todd, Mr. W.H. Gage, Dr. H.J. MacLeod, Mr.
F.A. Forward, Dr. J.C. Berry, Dr. G.H. Harris, Mr. F. Read,
Mr. H.N. MacCorkindale, Mr. W.R. McDougall, Rev.Dr. J.G.
Brown, Mrs. K.M. Beckett, Mr. K.P. Caple, Dr. A.E.Grauer,
Dean M. Dorothy Mawdsley, Miss Florence S. Mulloy, Dr.W.N.
Sage, Dr. G.G.Sedgewick, Dr. A.B.Schinbein, Dr.H.V. Warren,
Mr. Gilbert Kennedy.
Expressions of regret for their inability to be present were received from Mr. H.O. English, Brig.Sherwood
Lett, Major H.C. Holmes and Dr. F.A. Turnbull.
Dean Finlayson read a telegram from the Chancellor
extending Season's greetings to all members of Senate.
From the Faculties
Reports on Christmas Examinations
Faculty of Arts and Science
Dean Buchanan presented a report on the First Term
examination results in the Faculty of Arts and Science.
He stated that no veterans and no students with medical
certificates were included in the list of those to be
required to withdraw.

Mr. Gage    ) That the students whose names appear
in the report be asked to discontinue
at Christmas with the provision that
any who present valid reasons for
failure be re-admitted for the remainder
of the Session.

Tuesday, December 30, 1947.
Faculty of Applied Science
Dr. MacLeod presented the report of the Faculty of
Applied Science.  No veterans had been asked to withdraw.

Mr. Forward) That the students in First and Second
Years whose names appear in the report
be asked to withdraw at Christmas.
Dr. MacLeod)
Mr. Forward) That the students in Third Year Applied
Science and in the Third Year of the
B.S.F. course whose names appear in the
report be asked to withdraw at Christmas.
Faculty of Agriculture
Dean Clement presented a verbal report from the
Faculty of Agriculture stating that no students had
been asked to withdraw at Christmas.  Some students
would be asked to consult with the Dean and might be
advised to drop their courses voluntarily.
From the Faculty of Arts and Science
Mr. Gage presented the recommendation from the Faculty
of Arts and Science with respect to the proposed courses
for the Summer Session 1948.

Dr. Warren) That the following courses be approved
subject to any necessary changes and
that the President be authorized to
make any required adjustments.
The Secretary pointed out that three new courses in
the Department of Economics, Political Science, and Sociology were proposed for the Summer Session. 1371

the Summer Session.

The Secretary read a letter from the Alumni Association requesting that representatives from the elected
members of Senate be appointed to the Alumni Association
Dr. Sedgewick)
Mr. Gage    ) That Dr. Warren be empowered to
convey the suggestion of the Chairman
to the Alumni that the Alumni appoint
to their Executive persons who are
also members of Senate.

Tuesday, December 30, 1947-
Mr. Gage presented a recommendation of the Joint
Faculty Committee on Prizes, Scholarships, and Bursaries
that the University Scholarship in Nursing and Health be
awarded to Miss Marney J. McLellan.
Mr. Gage        )
Mr. MacCorkindale) That this award be approved.
In order to clarify for the High Schools the regulation in reference to Mathematics as issued in the "Requirements for University Entrance and Senior Matriculation,
1948", Mr. Gage recommended that the new course Mathematics
V be accepted as meeting the requirements in this subject
in the case of students completing their University
Entrance standing in 1948.
It had been the intention that in the current school
year students in Grade XI would take the new course Mathematics V and that those in Grade XII would take the old
course Mathematics VI, as formerly.  Because of ambiguity
in the regulation, it was desirable that the new course be
accepted as satisfying the requirements for 1948.
