Wednesday, October 18th, 1933
The first regular meeting of the Senate of The
University of British Columbia for the session 1935-54
was held on Wednesday, October 18th, 1953, at 8:00 p.m.,
in the Board and Senate Room.
Present: President L. S. Klinck (in the Chair),
Dean R. W. Brock, Dean D. Buchanan, Mr. E. A. Lloyd, Dr.
G. G. Moe, Mr. F. A. Wilkin, Dr. H. F. G. Letson, Mr.
H. F. Angus, Dr. A. H. Hutchinson, Hr. J. N. Harvey, Mr.
G. W. Clark, Rev. Dr. J. G. Brown, Rev. Dr. W. H. Vance,
Mr. H. T. Logan, Dr. G. G. Sedgewick, Miss M. L. Bollert,
Mr. Sherwood Lett, Miss A. B. Jamieson, Ur. A. E. Lord,

Expressions of regret at their inability to be
present at the meeting were received from His Honour

Mr. Lord  ) That the minutes of the fifth
regular meeting of August 25th, 1935,
be taken as read, and adopted.

For the information of Senate a statement showing
the registration by Faculties and Years for the Session
1955-54, as at October 18th, 1955, was presented.
From the Board of Governors
A copy of the balance sheet and statement of
revenue and expenditure for the fiscal year ending March
51st, 1955, was received from the Board of Governors.

A copy of the report of the President for the
academic year ending August 51st, 1932, was received.
(Copies of this report were mailed to members of Senate
in July, 1935. )

attention to the fact that the term of appointment of
the Senate representative on the Committee for the
Management of the Gymnasium had expired.

Attention was called to the fact that the Register
of Honorary Degrees did not bear the signature of Dr. Wong,
on whom the honorary degree of LL.D. had been conferred
in absentia.

Register his acknowledgement of
the degree be kept in the Register.

Autumn Awards of Prizes and Scholarships -  made by
the Chairman of Senate upon the recommendation of the
Joint Faculty Committee on Prizes and Scholarships in
conformity with the resolution of Senate, December 18th,
1929.  (For the information of Senate.)
The Univeraity Scholarship in Applied Science in
Nursing and Health  -  Miss Lyle Creelman, Third Year
student in Nursing and Health
A Khaki University and Y.M.C.A. Memorial Fund Bursary
- Miss Violet M. Thomson, Fourth Year Arts student.
Junior Matriculation Scholarship for District No. 4 -
relinquished by William Finlayson, reawarded to William
N. English, Lord Byng High School, Vancouver.
American Women's Club Bursary - Miss Marjorie Wilson,
Second Year Arts student.
Junior Matriculation Scholarship for District No. 6 -
relinquished by Miss Mary Anita McCulloch, reawarded to
Herbert Lewis Dodd, Creston High School, Creston.
From the Faculties
Report   on   Supplemental   Examinations,   Special
Examinations   and   Re-readings.   Marks   of   all   students.

A report was received in reference to students who,
since the Congregation of May llth, 1953, had completed
courses for a degree or a diploma.  The results were pre-

fourth  and   fifth  years.
That  Calendar   Regulation   8,   page   215,   be
amended   to   read:
"A  student  who   is   required   to   repeat  his  year
will   not   be  allowed   to   take   any work   in  a
higher  year   excepting   that   a   student  who   has
taken the   Field Work  of   Civil   2   or   7  of   the
preceding   summer  may  take   Civil   5   or  Civil
15   the  following   session."

A letter from Dean Bollert was read, expressing her
appreciation of the letter of sympathy received from the
Senate.
A letter was received from Mr. J. Howard T. Falk, of
the Vancouver Council of Social Agencies, addressed to the
President, suggesting the establishment by the University
of an extension course of lectures on social problems,
methods and agencies.

committee to be appointed by the
Chair, to report back to the next
meeting of Senate.

Dr. Sedgewick presented the following recommendation
from the Committee on Ceremonies:
That all diplomas shall bear the date of
the congregation immediately following the
meeting of Senate in which they have been
ordered, whether the candidates present themselves to the Chancellor for the actual
conferring of the degree at that or some
subsequent congregation. 296.

Reoommendations of the Matriculation Board
These recommendations had been considered by the
Faculty of Arts and Science and the Faculty of Applied
Science, but not by the Faculty of Agriculture.

Mr. Lloyd) That these recommendations be discussed.

1. If a candidate has credit towards Junior Matriculation for not more than two papers, he will
be granted standing on the remaining papers if
taken at one time (1) provided he obtains a
total of at least 60% on these papers and a
minimum of 40% in each paper and (2) provided
that the candidate is completing, with 50% in
each paper, certain other High School subjects
which are considered the equivalent of the papers
for which he has credit.  The candidate will, of
course, obtain credit for each paper in which he
makes 50% or over.

credit given as in the case of Geography.

Regulations in reference to the awarding of general
proficiency scholarships
From the Faculty of Arts and Science 29 7.
Wednesday,   October   18th,   1933
That   the   following  paragraph  be   included   among
the   general   calendar   regulations   for   medals,
prizes   and   scholarships:
To  be  eligible   for  a   general   proficiency
scholarship   a   student   must   take   a   full  year's
course   (15  units)   which  must   include   the   required  courses  for  the   year   in which  he   is
registered,   if  credit   for   these   courses   has
not   already been   obtained,
that  this   regulation be   made   applicable
and
during the present session.
From the Faoulty of Applied Science
That the following paragraph be included among
the general calendar regulations for medals, prizes
and scholarships:
To be eligible for a general proficiency
scholarship in the Faculty of Applied Science
a student must take a full year's course,
which must include all the required courses
for the year in which he is registered.
