Friday, August 26th, 1932
The fifth regular meeting of the Senate of The
University of British Columbia for the Session 1931-52
was held on Friday, August 26th, 1952, at 8:00 p.m., in
the Board and Senate Room.
Present: President L. S. Klinck (in the Chair),
Dean R. W. Brock, Dean D. Buchanan, Dr. A. H. Hutchinson,
Mr. J. N. Harvey, Dr. F. P. Patterson, Mr. G. W. Clark,
Rev. Dr. W. H. Vance, Dr. G. G. Sedgewick, Mr. Sherwood
Lett, Mr. H. T. Logan, Dr. Evlyn F. Farris,  Dr. C.
Killam, Miss A. B. Jamieson, Dr. W. B. Burnett, The Most
Rev. A. U. de Pencier and Mr. Lyle A. Atkinson.
Expressions of regret at their inability to be
present at the meeting were received from Dean F. M.
Clement, Mr. Sydney Anderson, Mr. H. P. Angus and Mr.
P. H. Elliott.

be taken as read, and adopted.
The report submitted at the meeting of Senate
on August 8th in reference to Calendar was corrected by the elimination of "Agricultural
Economics 2" from the list of "Courses dropped"
in the Faculty of Agriculture, and a corresponding
change was made in the minutes of the meeting of
August 8th.

A   letter   from   the   Board   of   Governors  was   read
giving  approval   to   the   recommendation   of   Senate   that   a
special   scholarship   of  $100.00  be   granted   to ' 255.

That   the   third   University   Scholarship   of

from   the  University,   be   re-awarded   to
Mi 33   Jean   Margot   Greene   who   stood   next
in   order   of  merit.

Additional Khaki University and Y.M.C.A. Memorial
1 Fund Scholarship
That an additional Khaki University and Y.M.C.A,
Memorial Fund Scholarship be awarded to
George Samuel Allen (Fourth Year Forestry) if
funds be available.  Mr. Allen made over 80%
in Fourth Year Forest Engineering, but his
application was not received until after the
awards were announced although he had discussed
' the matter of his application with the
Registrar previously and believed he had pre-
I sented it before the last day of the final
examinations as required by the Calendar. 236.

Information   re   Scholarship   winners   and   their
attendance   at   the   University   or   at   another   institution
(Geoffrey  Bodwell).
The  Committee   on Prizes   and  Scholarships   i 3   of
"the   opinion   that    scholarships   awarded   for   undergraduate
work   are   tenable   only  at  the   University".

Dr. Hutchinson) That the report of the Scholarship Committee be approved with
reference to the Bodwell case
and others like it.  This is not
to be interpreted at the present
time as applying to colleges
affiliated with the University
of British Columbia.

Students   of  Nursing  from   the   University  of   Alberta  coming
into   The   University   of   British  Columbia for   FifVa. Year   of
course.

Dr. Sedgewick) That the Registrar be instructed
to send a letter expressing
appreciation to the Department of
Nursing of the University of
Alberta for directing the students
here and stating that they will be
very wel come .

A   letter   from   the   Provincial   Parent-Teacher
Federation was   read,   with   regard   to   bursaries   awarded   to
Home   Economics   students.

Mr. Lett     ) That inasmuch as the University has
been unable to continue the course
in Home Economics, Senate express
its appreciation to the Federation
for the awarding of these bursaries
to students who were registered in
the course in Home Economics at
this University.

The   Joint  Faculty   Committee   on  Prizes   and   Scholarships   reported   that   His   Honour   Judge   Cayley   had   generously
renewed   the  Beverley   Cayley   Scholarship   of   $100.00   for   the
Sessi on  1932-55.

Mr.   Clark)    That   Senate   express   to   Judge   Cayley its
appreciation   of   his   action   in   renewing
the   Scholarship.

A letter was read from the Hon. H. M. Marler,
Canadian Minister to Japan, stating that he expects to be
in Vancouver September 19th to 24th.
Mr.   Harvey)
Mr.   Clark   )   That   Mr.   Marler's   letter be   received
and   that   arrangements  for   a   special
Congregation   be   left  with  the   Chair,
with   power   to   act.

Matriculation   Scholarships
Mr.   Elliott.
A   letter   from  Principal   Elliott   was   read   in which
he   asked   that   this   question  be   not   raised   at   the
present   time . 258.
