Wednesday, November 5th, 1930
A special meeting of the Senate of The University
of British Columbia was held on Wednesday, November 5th,
1930, at 8:00 p.m., in the Board Room.
Present: President Klinck (in the Chair), Dean
R. W. Brock, Dean Buchanan, Dr. G. G. Moe, Dr. H.
Vickers, Mr. J. M. Turnbull, Mr. H. F. Angus, Dr. A. H.
Hutchinson, Mr. J. A. Campbell, Mr. G. W. Clark, Rev.
Dr. J. G. Brown, Judge F. W. Howay, Dr. G. G. Sedgewick,
Mr. Sherwood Lett, Mr. H. T. Logan, Mrs. Beatrice Wood,
Dr. C. Killam, Dr. W. B. Burnett and Mr. Lyle Atkinson.
Expressions of regret at their inability to attend
the meeting were received from Dr. Farris,, Rev. Dr.
Vance, Principal Elliott and Miss Jamieson.

Mr. Angus    ) That the letters be received and
filed.

The Secretary read the call for the meeting.
RECOMMENDATIONS FROM THE FACULTIES IN REFERENCE TO
 COURSE OF STUDY FOR MATRICULATION	
These were considered clause by clause, and
adopted; special action was taken as follows:
Clause 4.
Mr. Angus     )
Dr. Hutchinson) That the words "Senior Matriculation" after "Agriculture III"
be deleted, and that the words
"removed from 'G* and" be inserted before "placed*.

Clause 7.
Mr. Angus     )
Mr. Campbell  ) That clause 7 be adopted.

Dr. Sedgewick) That the words "and Greek" be
added after "German".
Amendment put and carried.
Mr. Angus)
Mr. Lett ) That the joint report, as amended, be
adopted, and be made the basis of a
communication to the Department of
Educati on.
Carried
The report as amended and adopted is as follows;

1. That while Health and Physical Education are
approved as High School subjects they be not
included in the list of subjects required
for Matriculation.
2. That the introduction of Geography as a
Matriculation option be approved.
3. That the change from Botany to Biology be
approved.
4. That Biology III (Senior Matriculation) and
Agriculture III be removed from "G" and placed
under "H, free electives" as extra Junior
Matriculation subjects.
5. That any Senior Matriculation credit or option
taken under "G* or "H" will be given credit for
the corresponding course in the First Year in
the University but will not reduce the total
number of units required for a degree unless
taken in excess of the total number of credits
required for Junior Matriculation.
6. That section "F. Science" be approved.
7. That German and Greek be included under section
"E" on the same basis as Latin and French, and
that this be put into effect as soon as the
Department of Education finds it convenient to
do so. >;

8. That English Grammar be required as an
examination subject in the Junior Matriculation
year.
9. That the Department of History in consultation
with the provincial Department of Education be
authorized to rearrange for examination purposes the Social Studies in Junior Matriculation.
10. That the Department of Modern Languages in
consultation with the Provincial Department
of Education be authorized to rearrange for
examination purposes the French in Junior
Matriculation.
11. That the present practice of not counting
the marks made by a student in "Technical
Subjects" in the 50-40% rule or in scholarship competition for Junior Matriculation
be approved; and that the same practice be
extended to "Home Economics" subjects.
12. That paragraph 8, page 9, be approved.
13. That the Faculty of Agriculture be authorized
to consult with the Provincial Department of
Education with regard to the subject matter
in Agriculture I and II as offered for
Junior Matriculation.
14. That the Faculty of Agriculture in consultation with the Provincial Department of
Education be authorized to arrange the
subject matter of Agriculture III so that
this may conform with Agriculture 1. of the
University curriculum.
