Monday, March 14th, 1921.
533 A special meeting of the Senate of the University of British
Columbia was held on the evening of Monday, March 14th, 1921, at eight
o'clock, in the Board Room at the University offices.
534 Present: The President in the Chair, Dean F. M. Clement,
Dean R. W. Brock, Mr. W. Sadler, Mr. P. A. Boving, Dr. E. H. Archibald,
Mr. L. F. Robertson, Mr. D. M. Robinson, Mr. T. A. Brough, Judge F. W.
Howay, Dr. W. D. Brydone-Jack, Mr. J. S. Gordon, Mr. G. E. Robinson,
Mr. W. P. Argue, Magistrate H. C. Shaw, Miss A. B. Jamieson, Principal
W. H. Vance, Mr. J. M. Turnbull.
535 Letters from Mr. E. B. Paul and Dr. T. H. Boggs,regretting
their inability to be present, were read.

Mr. Gordon) That these letters be received and filed.

536 Recommendations from Faculty:-
(a) Vancouver Vagabonds' Club Prize.
That a prize of $25.00, offered by the Vancouver
Vagabonds' Club be accepted, and that the Calendar
entry in reference thereto be as follows:-
A prize of the value of $25.00, given by the
Vancouver Vagabonds' Club, is offered for the
best original short poem written by a student of
the University.
The award will be made by the Department of
English.
Principal Vance)
Mr. Gordon    ) That the Calendar statement be amended to
read: "The award will be made on the
recommendation of the Department of English.
Carried.
(b) Players ' Club Prize.
That a prize of $50.00, offered by the Players' Club be
accepted, and that the Calendar statement in reference
thereto be as follows:- (214)
A prize, of the value of $50.00, donated by the Players'
Club, is offered for an original play written by a
student of the University, and suitable for the Club's
Christmas performance.
The award will be made by the Faculty members of the
Advisory Board of the Players' Club.

Mr. Gordon   ) That the Calendar statement be amended to
read: "The award will be made on the
recommendation of the Faculty members of
the Advisory Board of the Players' Club."

Dr. Brydone-Jack) That the report as amended be adopted.

Mr. D. M. Robinson) That the thanks of Senate be extended
to these two Clubs for these prizes.

537  Reports of Committees:-
(a) Calendar Committee.
On behalf of the Committee on Calendar, the Chairman
reported progress, stating that in the present uncertainty
in the matter of University finances, it was deemed inadvisable
to proceed further for the time being.

Mr. Brough  ) That the report be adopted.
538     (b)     The President stated that owing to a reduction in the
amount of the grant asked for University purposes for 1921-22
and of the probable restriction in registration and courses,
it was deemed unwise to proceed further with Calendar material
at the present time; that the same held true with regard to
the question of Tuition Fees, but that, as soon as possible, an
estimate would be made of the amount of work that could be
carried on successfully on the appropriation. (215)
After some discussion, following the President's
statement, the motion was put to vote, and carried.
Principal Vance)
Judge Howay   ) That the Senate ask for a conference with
the Board of Governors for the purpose
of discussing the financial situation of
the University and taking whatever steps seem
necessary in consequence.
Carried.
539 (c) To bring in a recommendation regarding the future policy
of the University with respect to the suspension or expulsion
of students.
It was explained that the Committee had only completed
its work on Monday afternoon and,as a result, the findings
of the Committee had not been placed in the hands of Senate,
the required ten days before a meeting.
Judge Howay)
Mr. Argue ) That the report follow the regular procedure
and be sent out to members for the next Senate
meeting.
Carried.
540 Mr. Brough gave notice of motion as follows:-
I beg to give notice that, at the next meeting of Senate, I
shall move that the Senate's resolution of February 16th, 1921, re
affiliation of Westminster Hall be reconsidered.

Mr. Robertson ) That we adjourn.
Carried.
