Monday, December 29th, 1941.
A special meeting of the Senate of The University of
British Columbia was held on Monday, December 29th, 1941,
at 8:00 p.m., in the Board and Senate Room.
Present:  President L. S. Klinok (in the Chair), Dean
J. N. Finlayson, Dean D. Buchanan, Dr. Blythe Eagles, Dr.
D. G. Laird, Dr. M. Y. Williams, Mr. F. H. Soward, Mr. J.
J N. Harvey, Dr. Evlyn F. Farris, Mr. A. R. Lord, Mr. H. T.
Logan, Dr. W. N. Sage, Dr. P. A. Boving, Dr. H. ¥. Warren,
Mr. A. E. Lord, Dean M. Dorothy Mawdsley, Dr. J. F. Walker
* and Miss Florence S. Mulloy.
Expressions of regret at their Inability to attend the
meeting were received from Dean F. M. Clement, Rev. Dr. J.
G. BroWn, and Mr. H. N. MacCorkindale.
From the Faculties
} Reports in reference to Christmas Examinations
ij^ Faoulty of Arts and Science
Dean Buchanan presented a report in reference to the
Christmas Examination results in the Faculty of Arts and
Science.  In view of the cancellation of three o'clock
examinations at the time of the black-out, as reported
to Senate on December 17th, the examination results were
incomplete.  No students, therefore, had been asked to
withdraw.
The report was received for information.
Faculty of Applied Science
Dean Finlayson presented a report in reference to
Christmas Examination results in the Faculty of Applied
Science, including Nursing.  The cancellation of three

o'clock examinations had not affected Second and Third Years
of Applied Science, but the results in Fourth and Fifth Years
were incomplete on this account.  The report included,-
(a) A summary of the results in Second and Third Years
of Applied Science, and Nursing.
(b) A recommendation that certain students in Second
and Third Years of Applied Science be required to
repeat the year (withdraw at Christmas).
(c) A recommendation that six students in the Second
Year be required to withdraw from the Faculty.
(d) A recommendation that certain students in Second
and Third Years who had failed be allowed to
continue.

Faculty of Agriculture
Dr. Eagles presented a report in reference to the
Christmas Examination results in the Faculty of Agriculture.
Because of the cancellation of three o'clock examinations
these results were incomplete.  No students, therefore,
had been asked to withdraw.

reports on examination results
upon the recommendations of the
Deans of the Faculties.

Cancelled Christmas Examinations
Reports were received from the Faculties that examinations would be held in January in certain of the subjects
affected by the cancellation order in December.  Definite
arrangements were left to the Departments concerned.
These reports were received for information.
From the Faculty of Applied Scienoe
Mr, Soward presented the recommendation of the
Faculty of Applied Science that scholarship awards be made
as follows,-

An offer of prizes amounting to $250.00, which had
been received from the Highland-Bell Mining Company, was
presented by Mr. Soward, together with the recommendation
of the Faculty of Applied Science that the offer be 874

accepted on the terms outlined in the following calendar
statement:
The Highland-Bell Prizes
The Highland-Bell Mining Company offers,
for the Session 1941-42, the sum of $250.00
to be given as prizes to students in Ore
Dressing 3 and Geology 9, the awards to be
made on the recommendations of the Departments concerned.

Dr. Warren) That the acceptance of these
prizes be approved.

Report of Committee on Calendar
A report in reference to the "Requirements for
University Entrance and Senior Matriculation, 1943" was
presented by Dean Buchanan.  With the exception of
certain minor changes in Biology II and in Physics I, the
"Requirements" for 1943 were the same as for 1942.  The
changes in Biology II would provide for alternative
practical work, details to be arranged in consultation
with the Department of Education, Victoria.

adopted.

The Chairman stated that a report in reference to the
terms of award of the Vancouver Women's Canadian Club
Scholarships would not be presented until the next regular
meeting of Senate on February 18th, so that this matter 875

could be considered at the same time as the statement
to be submitted by the I.O.D.E. in regard to the
proposed terms of award of the I.O.D.E. Scott Memorial
Scholarship.
The Chairman wished the members of Senate a Very
Happy and Prosperous New Year.
The meeting adjourned.

on Wednesday, February 18th, 1942, at 8:00 p.m., in the

With respect to the recommendations of the Faculty of
Arts and Science regarding the proposal to confer the
degree of B.Ed. (Bachelor of Education), which had been
laid on the table at the meeting of the Senate on
December 17th, 1941,-

Directed Reading Courses for 1942-43
A communication was received from the Faculty of
Arts and Science recommending that the following 878
Wednesday, February 18th, 1942.
Directed Reading Courses be offered for 1942-43:
History 4 - Mediaeval Europe, 500-1300
English 16 - Romantic Poetry, I78O-I83O

Required courses in languages for science students
A communication was received from the Faculty of
Arts and Science recommending that the following
change should be made in the calendar regulations
concerning required courses in languages,-
(1) Students offering four science courses (12 units)
in the First and Second Years may fulfil the
language requirement (b) (The first two courses
in a language offered for University Entrance,
one course in each year.) by taking any two of
the following:
French 1, French 2, Beginners' Latin,
Latin 1, Latin 2, Beginners' German,
German 1, German 2, Beginners' Greek,
Greek 1, Greek 2.
Only one beginners' course may be selected.
(2) Students offering six science courses (18 units)
in the First and Second Years may postpone the
second course in a language under (1) until the
Third or Fourth Year.
The science courses in (1) and (2) may be selected
from:
Bacteriology, Biology, Botany, Chemistry,
Geology (not Geography), Physics, Zoology.

Combined honours courses
A recommendation was received from the Faculty of 879
Wednesday, February 18th, 1942.
Arts and Science that the calendar statement concerning Combined Honour Courses should be changed to read
as follows,-
(a) Any two of:
Bacteriology and Preventive Medicine
Biology and Botany
Chemistry
Geology
Mathematics
Physics
Zoology
Note: While any two of the above subjects may be
combined, not all such combinations are
feasible.  Students should therefore confer
with the Heads of the Departments concerned
before entering upon a course for combined
honours.
(A revised list of the requirements for
combined honours in each of the above departments to be supplied by the Head of
the Department.)
(b) Any two of:
Economics, etc., (as at present).

Mr. Soward   ) That the recommendation be
approved.

Mr. Soward, Chairman of the Joint Faculty Committee
on Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries, reported that the
following communications had been received,-
(1) From the Faculty Women's Club advising that it
had been found necessary to lower the amount of
the Faculty Women's Club Bursary from $100 to
$75, and
(2) From the Alliance Francaise asking that the
calendar statement in reference to the Alliance
Francaise Bursary be changed to read "a bursary yso~

of not less than twenty-five dollars" instead
of fifty as heretofore.
These changes had been recommended by the Committee
and approved by the Faculty of Arts and Science.

From the Faculty of Applied Science
The following reoommendations of the Faculty of
Applied Science were received,-
(1) That the University Scholarship in Nursing and
Health be awarded to Miss Mary Hicks.
(2) That, in view of the ruling of the Committee on
Graduate Studies, the Kelowna Exploration
Company, Limited, Scholarship be awarded to
Mr. R. R. Taylor.

approved.

Library
The Twelfth Report of the Library Committee covering the period from April 1, 1940, to March 31, 1941,
had been mimeographed and mailed to all members of
the Senate.

Committee be adopted.

On Calendar
Dr. Todd, Chairman of the Committee on Calendar, 881
Wednesday, February l8th, 1942.
presented the report of the Committee on the Calendar
for 1942-43.  Copies of a synopsis of the report
setting forth the principal changes were distributed
to members of the Senate.
The report was considered section by section.
Under Section 1 special note was made of the addition on page 34 of a paragraph in regard to the right
of the University to limit the registration in, or to
cancel, any of the courses listed.

Dr. Laird) That the addition of this paragraph
be approved.

With respect to that part of Section 1 dealing with
Medals, Scholarships, Prizes, etc. ,-

following statement be added to
page 44, paragraph 10:
"If the invested funds do not produce the revenue required for the
amount of scholarships and bursaries
as named in the calendar, these
scholarships and bursaries will be
correspondingly reduced."

listed in the report, the David
Thorn Bursaries be reduced to $87.50,
$50.00 and $60.00 in the order in
which they appear in the Calendar.

and Health.
After some discussion of this statement as compared
with the statement in regard to limitation of attendance
in Nursing and Health and in the Teacher Training
Course as set forth under "Registration and Attendance"
on pages 34 and 36 of the calendar,-

Honorary Degrees, recommending,
That the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws be
conferred at the Spring Congregation upon
Emeritus Professor Lemuel Robertson, M.A., and
Emeritus Professor C. McLean Fraser, M.A.,Ph.D.,
F.R.S.C.

On Request for Affiliation of a Roman Catholic College
Judge Howay presented the following report of the
Committee appointed to consider the request of His
Excellency the Archbishop of Vancouver for the affiliation
of a Roman Catholic College,-
"That His Excellency the Archbishop of Vancouver
be advised that the Senate has reconsidered his
request for the affiliation of a Roman Catholic
Arts College, offering certain subjects only, and
has found it inadvisable to approve the request."
