Wednesday, February 2nd, 1921.
505 A special meeting of the Senate of the University of British
Columbia was held in the Board Room of the University on Wednesday, the
2nd day of February, 1921, at 8 p.m.
506 Present:  The President in the Chair, Dr. R. E. McKechnie,
Dean F. M. Clement, Dean R. W. Brock, Dean H. T. J. Coleman, Mr. P. A.
Boving, Mr. E. G. I'atheson, Dr. E. H. Archibald, Dr. T. H. Boggs, Dr.
H. Ashton, the Right Rev. A. U. de Pencier, Mr. L. F. Robertson, Mr.
T. A. Brough, Judge F. W. Howay, Dr. W. D. Brydone-Jack, Mr. J. S.
Gordon, Mr. G. E. Robinson, Principal E. B. Paul, Mr. W. P. Argue,
Magistrate H. C. Shaw, Miss A. B. Jamieson, Mr. J. H. Senkler, Principal
W. H. Vance, Mr. J. M. Turnbull.
507 The notice of meeting was presented as follows:-
A special meeting of the Senate of The University of British
Columbia will be held in the Board Room of the University on
Wednesday, the 2nd day of Pebruary, 1921, at 8 p.m.
Business
(1) To consider the results of the Christmas Examinations and
the action of the Facility thereon:
(2) To consider, and if deemed advisable, to approve the action
of the Faculty in regard to requiring certain First Year students
in Arts, viz:
A. McK. Bull, G. F. Elliot, M. D. Ford, V. G. Hillman, A. V.
Jacobson, M. Macaulay, M. M. McKee, K. G. MacEenzie, H. W. O'Neill,
D. B. Pollock, W. E. Raymer, S. M. Roberts, M. Smith, B. M. Collins,
J. A. Shotton, W. R. P. Williamson,
and certain Second Year students in Arts, viz:
P. V. McLane, G. Russell, K. B. Knowlton, F. J. McRae, D. W.
Wilson,
and certain First Year students in Applied Science, viz:
L. H. Evans, H. W. Gwyther, R. N. Shakespeare, E. G. B.
Stevens, W. A. Bain, W. H. Fanning, H. S. A. Johnson, P. B. Jones,
V. S. Carlyle, (199)
and certain Second Year students in Applied Science, viz:
E. M. Molyneux, W. R. Baker, G. S. Kidd,
to withdraw from the University during the present year.
(3) To consider, and if deemed advisable, to confirm the action
of Faculty in refusing the applications of A. McK. Bull, K. B.
Knowlton, M. M. McKee, H. W. O'Neill, L. H. Evans, W. A. Bain
and H. S. A. Johnson, for re-admission to the University during
the present year.
(4) And generally to consider the result of the Christmas
Examinations and to take such steps and give such directions In
respect thereto as Senate may deem advisable.
Dated this twenty - first day of January, 1921.
508 Correspondence between the President and Mr. A. E. Bull, whose
son , A. McK. Bull, had been required to withdraw from the University
for the balance of the session on account of the poor showing made at
the Christmas examinations, was read.
The President stated that Mr. A. E. Bull had applied for
permission to appear before Senate to present his case, and he was
informed that there were a number of other parents waiting who also
desired the same privilege.

Judge Howay   ) That Mr. Bull be allowed to appear before
Senate to present his case.
Carried.
Magistrate Shaw)
Judge Howay   ) That all parents who are present be allowed
to appear with Mr. Bull to present their
cases.
Carried.
Mr. Bull and Mr. H. W. Baker then addressed the Senate in
reference to those students who had been required to leave, and the"
delegation withdrew.
509 Principal Vance)
Judge Howay   ) That, in accordance with section 83, subsection (e){Chapter 234 of the University (200)
Act), and the notice calling the meeting, we
proceed to determine the results of the
Christmas examinations.
In amendment:

Magistrate Shaw) That this meeting adjourn until such
time as notice can be given to call
another meeting to consider the question
of whether that regulation should be
rescinded or not.
Amendment put to vote and lost.
Original motion put and carried.
Principal Vance)
Dean Coleman  ) That the findings of Faculty in regard to
the Christmas examinations be approved.
Carried.
It was pointed out by the mover and seconder that the intent
of the above motion was with regard to the markings of Faculty on the
Christmas examinations.
Mr. Brough      )
Mr. G. E. Robinson) That while Senate feels that the Faculty,
in its recent action in asking certain
students to withdraw from the University,
was justified by the regulations laid
down by Senate, it do now proceed to
consider the appeal of these students
for re-admission.
Carried.
Principal Paul)
Dean Coleman ) That the natter of the appeal of these
excluded students be referred back to
Faculty for their re-consideration.
Carried.
Dr. Ashton )
Dean Coleman) That we adjourn to Saturday, February 5th,
at 4 p.m.
Carried.
