Januarv 3rd, 1946,
A special meeting of the Senate of the University of
British Columbia was held on Thursday, January 3rd, 1946,
at 8:00 p.m., in the Board and Senate Room.
Present: President N. A. M. MacKenzie (in the Chair),
Chancellor E. W. Hamber, Dean Clement, Dean Finlayson, Dean
Curtis, Dr. 0. J. Todd, Mr. W. H. Gage, Dr. H. J. MacLeod,
Mr. F. A. Forward, Dr. J. C. Berry, Dr. G. H. Harris, Mr.
F. Read, Mr. H. N. MacCorkindale, Mr. H. 0. English, Mr.
W. R. McDougall, Dr. H. R. Trumpour, Mrs. K. M. Beckett, Mr.
K. P. Caple, Dr. Sherwood Lett, Mr. A. E. Lord, Dr. W. N.
Sage, Dean M. Dorothy Mawdsley, Dr. A. B. Schinbein, Dr.
F. A. Turnbull, Dr. H. V. Warren, Mies Florence S. Mulloy.
Expressions of regret for their inability to be present were received from Dean Buchanan, Dr. J. F. Walker,
Dr. J. M. Ewing, and Mr. F. J. Burd.
From the Faculties
Reports on Christmas Examinations
Faculty of Arts and Science
Mr. Gage, acting Dean, presented a report on the
Christmas Examination results in the Faculty of Arts
and Science, including Commerce and Home Economics.
The report recommended that certain students in First
and Second Year Arts, Second Year Commerce, and First
Year Home Economics be required to discontinue attendance for the remainder of the session. After considerable discussion

Dr.   Sage)   That  those whose names appear in the
report be asked to withdraw for the
remainder of  the session.

The President   suggested that  the  Press be  informed 1179
January 3rd,   1946.
that the numerous difficulties due to present  conditions
had been  considered   in making up the  report.     No  ex-service
personnel had been asked to  withdraw.
Faculty of Applied Science
Dean Finlayson presented the report on the results
of the Christmas Examinations in the Faculty of Applied
Science,   including Nursing.     This  report  included:
(a) A summary of the results in all years.
(b) The following recommendations:
(i) That certain students in Second, Third and
Fourth Years and Second Year Nursing be
required to repeat the year (withdraw at
Christmas).
(ii) That one student in Third Year be required
to withdraw from the Faculty.

Mr. Forward  ) That the report of the Faculty
of Applied Science be approved.

Faculty of Agriculture
Dean Clement presented a report on Christmas
Examination results in the Faculty of Agriculture. The
report recommended that one student in First Year be
required to withdraw at Christmas.

Dr. Harris  ) That this report be accepted.

Dean Curtis gave a verbal report on the results of
the Christmas examinations in the Faculty of Law.

Mr.A.E.Lord)   That this report be approved.

Dean Curtis presented recommendations of the Faculty
of Law that:
(a) the usual practice in this University with regard
to the grading of students be accepted by the
Faculty of Law,
(b) the following regulations with regard to
supplementals:
Students must complete the work of one year
before proceeding to the succeeding year.
Students who have obtained an aggregate of
over 5Of. and have failed in not more than
two subjects will be allowed to write supplemental examinations in those subjects.

approved.

Dr.   Sage)   That  students who have been required
to withdraw from Applied Science and
Agriculture be not  allowed to reregister in the Faculty  of Arts and
Science  in January.

Mr. Gage, Chairman of the Joint Faculty Committee on
Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries, presented the following
recommendations of scholarship awards as approved by the
Faculties concerned:

meeting of December 19th, at the request of Senate:

sent the Librarian for his
excellent report.

Dr. Warren) That a copy of this report be forwarded to the Board of Governors
for information.

A letter was received from the Superintendent of
Education submitting certain proposed changes in requirements in Mathematics for University Entrance and Senior
Matriculation as approved by the Department of Education.
These had been placed before the Faculties and the following resolutions passed:
Faculty of Arts and Science
"That these proposals be forwarded to Senate with
the approval of the Faculty, subject to further
consideration by the Faculty of the number of 'A'
courses that may be accepted for credit in Senior
Matriculation."
Faculty of Applied Science
"That these proposals be approved, provided that no
change is made in the present requirements for
admission to Applied Science."
Faculty of Agriculture
"That these proposals be approved in principle." >

Senate subject to further consideration
by Faculty and Senate as to the number
of "A" subjects that are to be
accepted for University Entrance and
with a reservation as to the subjects
for which Mathematics may be a prerequisite.

From the Faculty  of Arts and Science
Mr.   Gage,   Chairman of the Joint Faculty Committee on
Prizes,   Scholarships and  Bursaries,   recommended the acceptance of the offer of British Columbia  Packers,   Limited,   of
four prizes   in Fisheries,   two of the value of  $100.00   each
and two of  $50.00 each.

that  it   be  left  to  the   Joint
Faculty Committee  on Prizes,.
Scholarships and  Bursaries to draw
up  the terms  of award  in consultation with the  donors.

From the  Faculty of Applied  Science
The  Chairman of  the  Joint Faculty  Committee  on Prizes,
Scholarships and   bursaries  presented the  recommendation of
the Faculty of Applied Science regarding the offer of a
prize of  $100.00 by the Canadian  Institute of Mining and
Metallurgy.

that it be left to the Joint Faculty
Committee on Prizes, Scholarships

For the information  of  Senate the President read a
letter from Mr.   J.  P.  Nicolls, one of the Executors of the
will of the late  Mr.   Jonathan  Rogers,   stating that Mr.
Rogers  had  left  a  legacy of   $75,000.00  to the University
of British Columbia.     It was agreed that Senate express
its deep  appreciation of this generous  gift.
The  Chairman read a  letter from Mr.   Robert  Fiddes
offering to contribute $5,000.00 per year  for a period of
ten years to  establish  a Chair  of Music  at  the University
of British  Columbia.

principle and that   a letter of
appreciation be  sent  to Mr.   Fiddes.

Dr. MacKenzie also read a letter from Mr. J. S. McLean
offering the sum of $1000.00 for the establishment of
bursaries at the University of British Columbia.

letter of thanks be sent  to
Mr.   McLean.

The President  read a  letter from Mr.   E.   J.   Tarr,
Chairman,   J.W.   Dafoe Foundation,   offering two  prizes of
$100.00  each for essays  in the   Department  of Economics
and  in the Departments of History or Political Science on
subjects dealing with  international   co-operation. 1184

Dr. Sage) That this offer be accepted in
principle, that a letter of appreciation be sent to the J. W. Dafoe
Foundation, and that the terms of
award be drawn up by the Joint
Faculty Committee on Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries in consultation
with the Foundation.

Dean Curtis reported that the Faculty of Law expressed
its concurrence in the action taken by the Faculty of Arts
and Science in the matter of admission and credits of
students from the Royal Naval College and Khaki University
and on the question of Spanish III for University Entrance.
On behalf of Senate, Chancellor Hamber expressed congratulations to Dr. Sherwood Lett on the recent honour of
C.B.E. conferred upon him by the King.
The meeting adjourned.
