Thursday, June 8th, 1935
An adjourned meeting of the Senate of The University
of British Columbia was held on Thursday, June 8th, 1933,
at 8:00 p.m., in the Board and Senate Room.
Present: President L. S. Klinck (in the Chair), Dean
F. M. Clement, Dean D. Buchanan, Mr. E. A. Lloyd, Mr*
F. A. Wilkin, Dr. H. F. G. Letson, Mr. H. F. Angus, Br*
A. H. Hutchinson, Mr. J. Newton Harvey, Mr. H. C. Holmes,
Dr. F. J. Nicholson, Mr. G. W. Clark, Rev. Dr. J. G.
Brown, Mr. H. T. Logan, Dr. G. G. Sedgewick, Miss M. L.
Bollert, Dr. C. Killam, Dr. Evlyn F. Farris and Miss
Isobel Harvey.
The Secretary read the call of the meeting.
Expressions of regret at their inability to attend
the meeting were received from Ur. P. H. Elliott and Hr.
Sherwood Lett.
The President extended a message of welcome to the
new members of Senate.
A letter was received from the Board of Governors
giving approval to the recommendations of Senate in
respect to Courses and Calendar for 1935-54, with the exception of the clause that Hr. J. H. Jenkins be made
Honorary Lecturer in Forestry in place of Hr. R. H. Brown.
Dr. Evlyn F. Farris presented the report of the
Committee on Honorary Degrees in reference to honorary
degrees to be conferred at the Special Congregation on
June 15th, as follows:
"In accordance with the expressed wishes of Senate,
and following its own policy as adopted at a meeting
held in February of which an interim report was made I

to Senate at its meeting on Hay 10th, the
Committee secured from the Exeoutive of the
Pacific Science Congress a short list of names
considered worthy of recognition by The
University of British Columbia.  The Committee,
after having carefully reviewed the attainments
of these gentlemen, recommends them to Senate as
distinguished scholars, eminently deserving of
honour, and further recommends that Senate grant
them the degree of Doctor of Laws, Honoris
Causa, at a Special Congregation to be held on
Tuesday, June 15th.  The names are as follows:
Professor Charles Joseph Gravier    -   France.
Hajor Geoffrey Ingram Taylor, H.A., F.R.S. -
Great Britain.
Dr. Shinkishi Hatai -   Japan.
Professor G. van Iterson, Jr.   -  Netherlands.
Dr. Thomas Wayland Vaughan      -  United States
Henry Harshall Tory, Esq., H.A.,D.Sc.,LL.D.,
F.R.S.Can., F.R.H.S. -  Canada*

A brief curriculum vitae of each of those proposed
for the honorary degree was placed before Senate.

to   the  press be   left  with   the

Mr.   H.   T.   Logan presented  recommendations  of  the
Joint  Faculty  Committee   on  Prizes  and   Scholarships   as
follows:
In view of the notification received from the Dean of
Arts and Science that the mark of Andrew Guthrie has
been changed so as to show an average of 91.5 %  instead
of 88.5%, as previously reported, and that Guthrie is
thus placed second in Third Year Arts and Science, the
Joint Faculty Committee on Prizes and Scholarships
recommends as follows: 285.
Thursday, June 8th, 1953.
(1) That the award of the University Scholarship in
Third Year Arts, second place, to Robert A. Findlay
and J. Gilbert Hooley be rescinded and that Guthrie
be awarded the (University) Scholarship to which his
corrected ranking entitles him.
(2) That Recommendation of Senate, 1(a), dated Hay 10th,
which reads,
"That the sums of $75.00 each which have been
awarded to
Robert A. Findlay and)
J. Gilbert Hooley    )joint winners of the
Scholarship, General
Proficiency, second
place, in the Third Year
in Arts and Science, be
increased to $150.00
each?,
be amended to read,
That because of the exceptionally high standing
made by
Robert A. Findlay and)
J. Gilbert Hooley    ) equal (91.2/&), students
of the Third Year of Arts and Science, a
special award of $75.00 be made to each of them.
(N.B.  The effect of Recommendation (1) of this
report, if adopted, will be to deprive Findlay and
Hooley of the second place Proficiency Scholarship
already awarded to them by Senate.  Recommendation
(2) is made because of this fact, as well as for
the reason stated in the recommendation.)
(3) That Recommendation of Senate 1(b), dated May 10th,
which reads,
"That similar action be taken in the case of the
joint winners of the General Proficiency, third
place, Scholarship in the First Year in Arts and
Science, viz:
Peter J. Disney and)
William G. Trapp   )",
be amended to read,
That the sums of $75.00 each which have been
awarded to
Peter J. Disney and)
William G. Trapp   ) joint winners of the
General Proficiency, third place, Scholarship
in the First Year in Arts and Science, be
increased to $150.00 each. 284.

Thi 8 amendment becomes necessary merely on account of
the change in wording effected by Recommendation (2)
above.  It makes no change in the sense of the original
Senate recommendation of May 10th.)
