Monday, December 30th, 1940.
A special meeting of the Senate of The University of
British Columbia was held on Monday, December 30th, 1940,
at 10:00 a.m., in the Board and Senate Room.
Present:  Dean D. Buchanan, Acting-President (in the
Chair), Dean F. M. Clement, Dean J. N. Finlayson, Dr.
Blythe Eagles, Dr. M. Y. Williams, Mr. F. H. Soward,  Dr.
Evlyn F. Farris, Mr. A. R. Lord, Mr. William Morgan, Rev.
Dr. H. R. Trumpour, Miss M. L. Bollert, Dr. G. G. Sedgewick, Dr. H. V. Warren and Miss Florence S. Mulloy.
A letter from the President was read expressing
regret at his absence from the meeting, and extending New
Year greetings to the members of the Senate.
Expressions of regret at their inability to attend
the meeting were received also from Dr. W. N. Sage, Dr. G.
A. H. Wright, Dr. P. A. Boving and Mr. J. N. Harvey.
Notice was received from the General Secretary of
the British Columbia Teachers' Federation that Miss Florence
S. Mulloy had been elected as the representative of the
Federation on the Senate.  The Chair extended a welcome to
Miss Mulloy.
From the Board of Governors
New Courses - Latin 24 and English 27.
Approved.
Courses for the Summer Session of 1941. Approved.
From the Faculties
Reports in reference to Christmas Examinations
Faculty of Arts and Science
Dr. Sedgewick presented a report in reference to 811.
Monday, December 30th, 1940.
the Christmas Examination results for the First and Second
Years in Arts and Science, including Commerce.  The report
included,-
(a) A recommendation that certain students whose
work was unsatisfactory be required to discontinue
attendance for the remainder of the session.
(b) A recommendation that certain students have their
University courses reduced to nine units for the
remainder of the session.

Mr. Soward   ) That the recommendations of the Faculty
of Arts and Science be adopted.

Faculty of Applied Science
Dean Finlayson presented a report in reference to
the Christmas Examination results in Applied Science, including Nursing.  The report included,-
(a) A summary of the results in all years, except the
Fifth in which returns were not complete.
(b) A recommendation that certain students in Second
and Third Years be required to repeat the year
(withdraw at Christmas).
(c) A recommendation that two students in Second Year
and one in Third Year be required to withdraw from
the Faculty.

Dr. Williams  ) That the report be received, and that
the recommendations of the Faculty of
Applied Science with respect to the
withdrawal of students be approved.

Faculty of Agriculture
Dean Clement presented a report in reference to
the Christmas Examination results in the Faculty of Agriculture.  No students were asked to withdraw. 812

The report was received for information.

Mr. Soward   ) That the Chair be empowered to make
any corrections or adjustments in
the reports on examination results
that may be rendered necessary by
reason of later information brought
to their attention.

Proposed Change in Regulations for Courses Leading
to the Master's Degree
A resolution which had been approved by the
Faculties of Arts and Science and Agriculture was presented,
together with an amendment proposed by the Faculty of
Applied Science, relative to a change in the regulations
for courses leading to the Master's degree for certain
graduate students engaged in scientific war work.
After some discussion in regard to the scope of the
proposed change and in reference to the wording of the
resolution,

Mr. Morgan) That the whole matter be referred
back to the Faculties.

Senior Matriculation Credit for German A
The following recommendation was received from the
Faculties:-
"That German A if taken on Senior Matriculation receive the same credit in the First
Year as Beginners' German." 813

A recommendation was received from the Faculty of
Applied Science that scholarship awards be made as follows,
The Britannia Mining and Smelting Company
Limited Scholarship, $250.00 - Charles S. Ney, B.A.Sc.
The Cariboo Gold Quartz Mining
Company Limited Scholarship,
$100.00
John D. Runkle, B.A.Sc.
The University Scholarship in
Nursing and Health, $175.00  - Phyllis S. Rowe

Dean Finlayson) That the recommendation be approved.

From the Faculty of Agriculture
The following recommendation was received from the
Faculty of Agriculture,-
"That Commerce 1 be added to the list of electives,
'C Group, of the Second Year Course  in Agriculture,
as set forth in the Calendar on page 266, and that
this change be applicable in the present session."

Reports of Committees
On Calendar
A report in regard to the "Requirements for University
Entrance and Senior Matriculation" for 1942 was presented.
Biology I, previously compulsory as a University Entrance 814
Monday, December 30th, 1940.
subject for students proceeding to Nursing, was set down
as an elective which these candidates should take, if
possible.  There were a few changes in reference books.
Otherwise the "Requirements" for 1942 were the same as
for 1941.

Dean Finlayson) That the report on Calendar be
approved.

On Prizes and Scholarships
An offer of a Loan Fund of $300.00, which had been
received from Mr. Tsutae Sato, was presented by Mr. Soward
together with a recommendation of the Joint Faculty
Committee on Prizes, Scholarships and Bursaries that the
Loan Fund be accepted on the terms outlined in the letter
from Mr. Sato and in accordance with the following
Calendar statement:
The T. Sato Loan Fund
This fund has been established by Tsutae Sato,
Esq., for students of Second Class Standing or
better, in the Third or Fourth Years in the
Faculties of Arts and Science and Agriculture, or
in the Fourth and Fifth Years of the Faculty of
Applied Science, or for students in the Fifth Year
of a Double Course.  For such loans the regulations
in paragraph 13 of the general regulations for
Scholarships, Bursaries and Loans are applicable.
The fund is distributed on the recommendation of
the Joint Faculty Committee on Prizes, Scholarships
and Bursaries.

Dr. Williams) That the recommendation be approved
and forwarded to the Board of
Governors.

Monday, December 30th, 1940.
The Chairman extended best wishes to the members of
Senate for the New Year.
The meeting adjourned.
