Wednesday, October 17th, 1923.
The first regular meeting of the Senate of The
University of British Columbia for the session 1923-24
was held on Wednesday, October 17th, 1923, at 8:00 P.M.,
in the Board Room.
Present:  Dr. Klinck (in the chair), Dean F. M.
Clement, Dean R. w. Brock, Mr. F. A. Boving, Mr. Wilfrid
Sadler, Dr. E. H. Archibald, Dr. T. H. Boggs, Dr. D.
Buchanan, Mr. D. .'.'.. Robinson, Mr. G. A. Fergusson, Rev.
Dr. W. II. Smith, Rev. W. H. Vance, Dr. H. F. G. Letson,
Miss A. B. Jamieson, Mr. G. 7. Scott, Mr. C. Killam,
Mr. H. C. Shaw, Dr. "/. 3. Burnett, Mr. G. E. Robinson,
Rev. A. H. Sovereign.

Mr. Killam)  That the minutes of the fourth
regular meeting of May 9th and
the special meeting of August 17th
be taken as read.       Carried
Letters from His Honour Judge Howay and Dean
H. T. J. Coleman were read, regretting their inability
to attend the meeting.

Dr. Burnett  )  That the letters be received
and filed. Carried
75 6    Award of Matrioulation ?oholarshi-ps.
Dean Clement    )
Mr. G.E.Robinson)  That the scholarships be
awarded in accordance with
the recommendation of the
Matriculation Board.

Wednesday, October 17th, 1923.
757 A letter from the Board of Governors re
Training Course for Teachers was submitted for the
information of Senate.
758 A communication from the Board of Governors
re the Faculty of Law was read, for the information of
759 A letter from the Shaw Schools, Toronto, was
read drawing attention to the use of the word "University"
contrary to Canadian usage, by a school in Vancouver
calling itself "The Canadian Extension University".

Dean Clement)  That a committee be appointed by
the President to confer with a
similar committee from the Board
of Governors to prepare a case
for presentation to the Minister
of Education in regard to the use
of the word "university" in all
connections, in the Province;
the committee to have power to
act. Carried
750 A letter from Mr. W. K. Beech was read asking
that, in the event of a Teachers' Training Department
being established in the University, provision be made
for the training of University graduates who wish to
qualify as teachers of Commercial subjects.

Mr.   Boving        )      That   the  matter   be   referred   to
the  committee   that   is  making
arrangements with  regard   to   the
teachers'    training.    ..Carried 341

761    Reports of Committees:
(a)  The Special Committee to complete details
of examination results reported that the
LeRoy Memorial Scholarship had been
awarded to C. G. MaoLaohlan of the Third
Year in the Faculty of'Applied Science

Dean   Brock)     That   the   report   be   adopted.
(b)  The Committee on Curriculum and Calendar
presented a report in the form of the
Announcement of the Summer Session.

Miss Jamieson)  That the report of the Committee
.be adouted. Carried
7 62    Appointment of Committee on Curriculum and Calendar.

Magistrate Shaw)  That the appointment of the
Committee be left with the
chair. Carried
7 63    Senate Elections, 1924.
Mr. Fergusson)
Mr. Scott    )  That the same procedure be
followed this year as in 1921.
7 64    Amplication of Ryerson College for Affiliation.
Mr. Vance   )
Dr. Buchanan)  That the application of Ryerson
College for affiliation with
The University of British
Columbia be referred to the
Faculties concerned for report
back to Senate. Carried 342.

i Dr. Smith)  That a committee from the Senate
be appointed by the President to
co-operate with a committee from
the Board of Governors, if they see
•* fit, to interview the respective
Ministers and if possible take such
steps as will avoid a repetition of
the proceedings in connection with
* the laying of the cornerstone of
the Science Building.

Mr. Boving)  That we adjourn. Carried
