680 The fourth regular meeting of the Senate of the University of
British Columbia for the session 1921-22 wan? held on Wednesday, May
10th, at 10 a.m., in the Board Room.
Present:- The President, in the Chair, Dr. R. E. McKechnie,
Dean Clement, Dean Brock, Dean Coleman, Mr. W. Sadler, Dr. E. H.
Archibald, Mr. L. W. Gill, Dr. T. H. Boggs, Mr. L. F. Robertson, Bishop
de Pencier, Mr. W. P. Argue, Miss A. B. Jamieson, Mr. C. Killam, Mr.
J. S. Gordon, Mr. J. M. Turnbull, Mr. G. E. Robinson, Rev. W. H. Vance.
Mr. Gordon)
Mr. Argue ) That the minutes of the regular meeting of
February 15th, of the special meeting of March
29th and of the special meeting of April 24th,
1922, be taken as read.
Carried.
From the Board of Governors.
681 (a) Giving notice of the Board's approval of the Statute re affiliation of Westminster Hall and the Anglican Theological College.

682 (b) Notifying Senate that Senate's resolution of April 24th in
respect to fees had been forwarded by the Board to the Minister of
Education.

Dr. Boggs ) That the letter be filed.

683 (c) Giving notice that the Board is still of the opinion that it
is unwise to assume any responsibility for examinations in Music.

Wednesday, May 10th, 1922.
A letter was received from Mr. C. H. Shortt, Registrar of the
Anglican Theological College of British Columbia, announcing that the
Board of Governors of the College had appointed Rev. Principal W. H.
Vance as its representative on the Senate of the University of British
Columbia.

Mr. Gill   ) That the communication be filed.
Carried.
685 A letter from Dr. Ashton was read giving notice of the offer
of two mednls for students of French in this Province:-
(a) A silver medal to the student entering the University with
the highest matriculation standing in French.
(b) A silver-gilt medal to the student with the highest standing in French ct the final (B.A.) examination.

Mr. Argue)  That the medals be received and that a letter of
appreciation from the Senate to the Alliance
Franeaise be sent by the Secretary of Senate.
Carried.
686 A letter from the Secretary of the High School and University
Matriculation Board was read, giving notice of the Board's approval of
the extension to Senior Matriculation of the regulation already passed
in reference to the Junior Matriculation of candidates engaged in
mercantile, industrial or other occupation.

687 The results of the examinations in the various years in the
Faculty of Arts and Scierce were presented by Dean Coleman, and were
considered and passed, section by section, with the following amendment:-
Mary M. Thompson, First Year - aegrotat standing.

Mr. Gill   ) That the results in the Faculty of Arts and
Science, as a whole, be adopted.

688 The results of the examinations ir the various years in the
Faculty of Agriculture were presented by Dean Clement, and were considered and passed, section by section, with the following amendment:-
"That "Passed with supplementals" be changed to read "Passed
conditionally".

Mr. Sadler ) That the results in the Faculty of Agriculture,
as a whole, be adopted.
Carried.
689 The results of the examinations in the various years In the
Faculty of Applied Science were presented by Dean Brock, and were
considered and passed, section by section.

Mr. Turnbull) That the results in the Faculty of Applied
Science, as a whole, be adopted.
Carried.
690 Report on award of Medals, Scholarships and Prizes.
Dean Coleman)
Mr. Gordon ) That the report be adopted.
Carried.
691 The following recommendation from the Faculty of Arts and
Science was presented:-
That Senate be asked to appoint a Committee, with power to
act, on the recommendations of the FacultyCommittee on
Scholarships, Prizes, Bursaries and Student Loans in reference to the award of the two University Graduate Scholarships - The University Scholarship, and The Anne Wesbrook
Scholarship.

Mr. Killam    )     That  the recommendation be adopted.

692 The results of the examinations in F:irst and Second Year
Arts in Victoria College were presentedj-

693 The following recommendation from the Faculty of Applied
Science was presented:-
That on account of congestion in the Fire Assaying Laboratory,
Metallurgy 2 be substituted for Fire Assaying In the fourth
year of the Chemical Engineering Course for the session of
1922-23.

I'.r.  Turnbull)  That this recommendation be accepted.
Carried.
694 A discussion took place as to the propriety of granting
diplomas, at the Congregation Exercises, to nurses who had completed
the one-year course in Public Health Nursing.

Dean Clement)    That  this  ceremony be  included  In the Congregation Exercises  to-morrow.
Carried.
695 The following recommendation from the Faculty of Agriculture
was presented:-
That the P.P. McLennan Scholarship, awarded to H. E. West,
and to be kept for Mr. West for one year, be given by reversion
to Mr. C. M. Barton, whose average is 74.8$.

Mr. Argue  ) That the recommendation from the Faculty of
Agriculture be adopted.
Carried.
696 Mr. C. Killam presented the report of the Committee on Chapel
Exercises:-
That the report of the Committee as given in Senate Minutes
No. 471 at page 176 of the Minutes of 1920 as follows:
"That in the opinion of this Committee the University
Act, and especially sections 95 and 110, preclude the
holding by the University of any Chapel Exercises, except
in the case of affiliated colleges."
be adopted.

697 Report of Committee to consider the question of establishing
a Canadian Royal College of Physicians and Surgeonsj-
Your Committee begs to report as follows:-
1. We do not find any strong demand for such a college.
2. Should, however, a Canadian Royal College of Physicians
and Surgeons be established, we would suggest that its charter
members should be very few in number and limited to men of outstanding reputation as teachers and for their professional skill.
3. That following the organization of the College, Its
degrees should be granted onlv on evidence both theoretical
and clinical of a very hip-h standard of attainment by the
applicant.
4. That, if possible, affiliation be arranged with the
Royal College of England, whereby the same standard of qualification would be obtained.
