Friday,   August   29th,   1930
The   fifth regular  meeting   of   the   Senate   of  The
University  of British  Columbia for  the   session  1929-30
was held on Friday, August 29th, 1930, at 8:00 p.m., in
the Board Room.
Present: President Klinck (in the Chair), Dean R. W.
Brock, Dean D. Buchanan, Dr. G. G. Moe , Dr. H. Viekers,
Mr. J. M. Turnbull, Mr. H. F. Angus, Mr. J. A. Campbell,
Dr. W. H. Vance, Mr. Sherwood Lett, Dr. Evlyn F. Farris,
Miss A. B. Jamieson, Mr. Sydney Anderson and Hr. Lyle A.
Letters of regret at their inability to attend the
meeting were received from Judge Swanson and Judge Howay.

Mr. Angus) That the letters be filed.

Mr. Anderson) That the minutes of the fourth
regular meeting of May 7th, 1930,
be taken as read, and adopted.
The President extended a message of welcome to the
new members of Senate.

From the Board of Governors  (for the information of
Course   in Home  Economics
A   letter was  received  from  the  Board   of
Governors  approving of   the   recommendation  of
Senate   with   regard   to   the   present  requirements
for   the   first   two   years   in  Home  Economics.
David Thorn Estate   Funds
The  Board  approved  of   the  recommendation
of   Senate   with   regard   to   a   further   sum  of
$3,500.00  whioh was   available   from   the   David
Thorn Estate.
From   the   Faculty   of  Arts   and  Science
Summer  Session  Examination   Results
Dean  Buchanan)
Mr.   Angus )   That   the   report   in  reference   to
Fourth Year   students be   approved,
and that  these   students be
granted   the  B.A.   degree.
Dean Buchanan pointed out that four of these
students had done almost all of their work by Summer
Session alone.
Dean Buchanan)
Mr. Angus    ) That standing be granted to the
students whose names appear in
the report in the Third, Second
and First Years.

Mr. Angus    ) That the recommendation of the
Faoulty of Arts and Science that
the Social Service Diploma be
granted to the three candidates,
be approved.
A letter from the College of Physicians and
Surgeons of British Columbia was read naming nominees
for the Board of Examiners for Chiropractors.  Letters,
also,from the British Columbia Chiropractic Association
and their solicitors were read stating that as in their
opinion there was no chiropractor entitled to be called
"duly qualified" within the definition of the Act, it
was therefore useless for them to nominate anyone.

Mr.   Angus        )   That   the   Senate   appoint   the   two
medical   men   suggested by   the
College   of   Physicians   and  Surgeons
of  British  Columbia,   and  notify  the
Chief   Justice   of   the   Court   of
Appeal   of  the   appointment  and  also
of  the  position  taken  by   the
Chiropractic  Association.
Mr.   Angus)
Dr.  Vance)   That we   inform  the  Attorney-General
of   the   action   taken.
A letter from the Superintendent of Education was
read in reference to the new Programme of Studies for
High Schools, a copy of which was presented. 91.

Dr. Vance   ) That the communication be filed.
In amendment:

Hiss Jamieson) That the question of the revised
Programme of Studies for Matriculation be referred to the
Faculties and that the Faculties
be asked for their opinion and
After some discussion Mr. Campbell, with the consent
of his seconder, withdrew his motion.
The amendment to the motion, now becoming the motion,
was put to vote , and carried.
