Thursday, December 28th, 1939
A special meeting of the Senate of The University
of British Columbia was held on Thursday, December 28th,
1939, at 8:00 p.m., in the Board and Senate Room.
Present:  Dean D. Buchanan, Acting-President (in
the Chair), Dean F. M. Clement, Dean J. N. Finlayson,
Dr. Blythe Eagles, Dr. D. G. Laird, Dr. M. Y. Williams,
Mr. A. H. Finlay, Mr. F. H. Soward, Mr. L. F. Robertson,
Mr. H. N. MacCorkindale, Dr. Evlyn F. Farris, Mr.
William Morgan, Miss M. L. Bollert, Dr. W. N. Sage, Dr.
H. V. Warren and Miss A. B. Jamieson.
Expressions of regret at their inability to attend
the meeting were received from President L. S. Klinck,
Mr. H. T. Logan, Mr. J. N. Harvey, Mr. J. N. Burnett and
Dr. J. F. Walker.
The Secretary read the call of the meeting.
From the Faculties
Reports In reference to Christmas Examinations
Faculty of Arts and Science
Professor Robertson presented a report in reference
to the Christmas Examination results for the First and
Second Years in Arts and Science.  The report included,-
(a) A recommendation that certain students whose
work was unsatisfactory be required to discontinue attendance for the remainder of the
session.
(b) A recommendation that certain students have
their University courses reduced to nine
units .

For the information of Senate Dean Buchanan presented a verbal summary of the distribution of grades
in the examinations of the First and Second Years in
the Faculty of Arts and  Science.  The summary showed,
also, the different districts and high schools from
which the students had come.
In this connection Mr. MacCorkindale pointed out
the relatively small number of students who had entered
the University from high schools in the Eastern part of
the city.
Faculty of Applied Science
Dean Finlayson presented a report in reference to
the Christmas Examination results in Applied Science,
including Nursing.  The report included,- I

(a) A summary of the results in all years.
(b) A recommendation that certain students in
Second, Third and Fourth Years in Applied
Science be required to repeat the year
(withdraw at Christmas).
(c) A recommendation that two students in the
Third Year be required to withdraw from
the Faculty.
(d) A recommendation that the cases of certain
students be referred to the Dean for
special consideration.

Agriculture.  No students were asked to withdraw.
The report was received for information.
